Three odontogenic myxomas are described immunohistochemically by a panel of poly- and monoclonal antibodies to characterize this
tumor
type. Three types of odontogenic myxoma cells were discriminated: spindle cells, stellate cells and hyaline cells. Neoplastic cells of myxomas were positively stained for transferrin, ferritin, alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (alpha 1-ACT), alpha-1-antitrypsin (alpha 1-AT), S-100 protein and vimentin; however, neuron specific
enolase
(NSE), S-100 alpha subunit, S-100 beta subunit, Factor VIII-related antigen (FVIII-AG) and cytokeratin (CK1) were negative. Spindle cells were positive for transferrin, ferritin, alpha 1-ACT, alpha 1-AT, S-100 protein and vimentin. Stellate cells were strongly positive for transferrin, alpha 1-AT, S-100 protein and vimentin. Hyaline cells reacted with alpha 1-ACT and alpha 1-AT. Myxomatous matrix showed negative reaction for all the antibodies used. These results have confirmed that odontogenic myxoma is a
tumor
of a dual fibroblastic-histiocytic origin.

We report a case of metastatic thymic neoplasm occurring in a 62-year-old Caucasian man. The
tumor
was polymorphic, with intimately admixed carcinoid, sarcomatous and undifferentiated components. Sarcomatous cells were spindle-shaped and immunoreactive for vimentin, actin and desmin. Carcinoid cells reacted for cytokeratin as well as with a panel of general neuroendocrine markers, including chromogranins A and B, synaptophysin, protein gene product (PGP) 9.5, neuron specific
enolase
(NSE), Leu 7 and Grimelius' silver. The endocrine nature of the latter cells was confirmed by ultrastructural evidence of abundant electron-dense granules 100 to 300 nm in size. Among the various hormones investigated immunohistochemically only the alpha chain of human chorionic gonadotropin (alpha-hCG) was detected in
tumor
cells. The
neoplasm
recurred after surgical resection and caused a typical carcinoid syndrome with skin flushing and increased urinary 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (5-HIAA). The diagnosis of multidirectional thymic carcinoma with two lines of differentiation, of carcinoid and sarcomatoid type, was made.

17 commercially available antibodies were applied on formalin fixed and paraffin embedded tissues of neuroblastomas (NBLs, n = 20), ganglioneuroblastomas (GNBLs, n = 7) and ganglioneuromas (GNs, n = 7), to assess their reliability as markers for neuroendocrine differentiation and the degree of
tumor
cell maturation. Our results indicate, that antibodies directed to neuron specific
enolase
, HISL 19, dopamine beta-hydroxylase, neurofilament, EGC, LK2H10 and leucocyte common antigen may be useful in discrimination of neuroblastomas from non-neuroendocrine round and small cell tumors in routinely processed tissue. Antibodies to neuron specific
enolase
, EGC, PGP 9.5, VIP, and S 100 protein may contribute to the determination of the maturation grade of (ganglio)neuroblastomas.

The clinical field in which
tumor
markers proved to be most useful is the monitoring of cancer patients. The present study was carried out in order to evaluate the role of
tumor
markers in the prognostic assessment, and pre-clinical identification of disease recurrence in patients with completely resectable non-small cell bronchial carcinoma.
Tumor
markers have been measured: a) pre-operatively, in 109 patients with resectable lung cancer and b) post-operatively, in 61 patients who underwent complete resections and were followed for at least one year after surgery. The carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), the neuron specific
enolase
(NSE), the tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA), the carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) and the carbohydrate antigen 50 (CA 50) have been determined in each patient. Long-term survival was significantly correlated with serum levels of the CEA, CA 50 and CA 19-9, while not with those of TPA and NSE. For pre-clinical detection of cancer recurrence, TPA and NSE were the most suitable indicators.

The alterations in specific activity and/or isozyme pattern of hexokinase, phosphofructokinase, aldolase,
enolase
, pyruvate kinase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase were studied in the tissue specimens of 26 patients with lipoblastic tumors and 28 patients with tumors of neurogenic origin. Although the biochemical data demonstrated that the activities of most enzymes studied were elevated in the specimens of the malignant tumors, only the differences in activity of hexokinase, pyruvate kinase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase measured between benign and malignant neurogenic tumors were significant. In malignant tumors, especially those of neurogenic origin, the isozyme pattern of pyruvate kinase showed a shift towards K-type subunits.

The combination of phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and concanavalin A induces the expression of a new set of glycolytic isozymes in human peripheral lymphocytes. The induced isozyme for each enzyme tested (hexokinase, phosphofructokinase,
enolase
, pyruvate kinase and lactate dehydrogenase) is usually the muscle form, which is often associated with rapidly dividing
tumor
cells. Increases in a specific isozyme can account for the 2-5-fold increase in specific activities of the enzyme induced by Con A plus PMA. Increased specific activities and the appearance of the new isozyme forms both occur relatively late, and are probably associated with the G1 or S phase of the cell cycle.

An 80-year-old man was evaluated for an epibulbar
tumor
on a phthisical eye. The initial biopsy diagnosis of the epibulbar
tumor
was poorly differentiated
neoplasm
. Exenteration of the phthisical eye and orbital contents showed an extensive pleomorphic adenocarcinoma of the nonpigmented epithelium of the ciliary body with extraocular extension. There was evidence of hyaluronic acid secretion and immunohistochemical staining was strong for vimentin, focal for epithelial membrane antigen and S-100 protein, and weak for neuron-specific-
enolase
. Electron microscopy demonstrated desmosomes between
tumor
cells, areas of thick, multilaminar basement membrane production surrounding individual
tumor
cells, and occasional intracytoplasmic intermediate filaments.

We determined concentrations of alpha and gamma-enolases in normal testis and in seminoma tissues by enzyme immunoassay. Concentrations of alpha-enolase were 4,170 +/- 2,040 ng/mg protein in normal testis (n = 8) and 8,140 +/- 4,480 ng/mg protein in seminoma (n = 8). Concentrations of
gamma-enolase
in seminoma (460 +/- 571 ng/mg protein) were significantly higher than those of normal testis (59 +/- 15 ng/mg protein). Immunohistochemistry showed positive
tumor
cells for
gamma-enolase
in 6 of 8 seminoma cases (75%). Serum
gamma-enolase
levels were elevated (greater than 6.0 ng/ml) in 9 of 12 patients (75%) with seminoma: 60% of stage I, and 100% of stages II and III. In 10 patients treated by surgical excision and chemotherapy, serum
gamma-enolase
was significantly reduced after the treatment. These findings indicate that elevated serum
gamma-enolase
is derived from enhanced
gamma-enolase
in seminoma tissues, and that serum
gamma-enolase
could be a useful biomarker for staging and monitoring clinical course in patients with seminoma.

The results of the immunohistochemical examinations by means of PAP method in 3 olfactory neuroblastomas were described. In the neoplastic cells there were cytokeratin as well as neuronal
enolase
. The same was recently encountered in the merkel cell
tumor
, which have the analogous histogenesis. The usefulness of the immunohistochemical method of examinations are essential in correct diagnosis.

A case of a solid and cystic
tumor
of the pancreas is presented. The immunohistochemical study of the resected
tumor
revealed alpha 1-antitrypsin and neuron specific
enolase
positive malignant cells proliferating pseudopapillary around fibrovascular stroma. Prominent calcification was characteristic in the present case.
