could be established from an examination of the cells of the

, comparing the results with those obtained by histological examination of the tumour tissues. There are very few dependable criteria to be found in the cells sedimented from the
CSF
(secretory activity; degree of differentiation) so, generally, only a determination as to whether the tumour is primary or metastatic, and if epithelial or mesodermal, can be made. Organ specificity can be identified only as regards the metastatic hypernephromas and thyroid carcinomas.

A 60-year-old man was admitted with anosmia, memory disturbance and disorientation in 1971. He was diagnosed the left olfactory groove meningioma and received the removal of the
tumor
after ligation of the left external carotid artery. Over the following two years he was admitted again with progressive memory disturbance and mental disorder in Aug. '73. Physical examination disclosed no abnormalities except for slight hypertention. His

pressure was 120 mm H2O and pneumoencephalograms showed marked dilatation of the lateral ventricles. Right carotid angiography revealed the right olfactory groove meningioma which was receiving a rich circulation from the branches of right ophthalmic artery. And right selective external arteriography showed an arteriovenous communication between the occipital artery and the transverse sinus. Contrast medium flowed to the left transverse sinus. Left internal carotid arteriography showed an anomalous arteriovenous communication between the tentorial branch (Bernasconi-Cassinari artery) of the internal carotid artery and sigmoid sinus. Further left vertebral arteriography revealed another arteriovenous communication between the left occipital artery anastomosed with vertebral artery and the transverse sinus. An operation for the right olfactory groove meningioma was made in Sep. '73. Some considerations on the pathogenesis of developement of these arteriovenous communications were discussed.

This report details the histories of five patients with clinical diencephalic syndrome who collectively demonstrate the variability found in the syndrome with respect to: (1) clinical course, (2) site of the
tumor
, and (3) ease of obtaining radiologic confirmation of the presence of a
tumor
. A review of an additional 67 patients indicates that the observations are not unique. The anatomic variability combined with the fact that the course of those who are treated is infinitely better than those left untreated adds urgency to the establishment of precise anatomic diagnosis. These considerations led to a critical review of the histories of the 72 patients. From this it can be stated that anteriorly and posteriorly placed tumors do exhibit subtle but significant differences in their clinical course, and roentgenograms of the optic foramina and analysis of the
CSF
cell and protein content appear warranted early in the investigation of emaciation from unknown cause. Further, an evaluation is made of the role of various radiologic techniques and of endocrine studies in establishing the diagnosis. Similarly, the relative merits of radiotherapy and/or surgery in the treatment of the disease are defined. Finally, the adequacy of the term diencephalic syndrome is discussed.

Two hundred and forty-five cases of craniopharyngiomas were obtained from the files of the AFIP and reviewed statistically with reference to their gross and microscopic appearance and clinical data. The majority of the tumors were cystic and microscopically, cysts were formed by squamous epithelial maturation, by degeneration of the stellate cells at the centers of adamantinomatous nests, or by degeneration of the stroma. Transitional forms were seen between adamantinomatous and squamous epithelium and keratohyaline granules and keratin were present in some cases. Because of this overlap, differentiation between craniopharyngiomas and suprasellar epidermoid cysts often is not possible. Significantly increased acturial survival rates were associated with absence of calcification in plain skull films in adults, negative

size under 3.0 cm.

Two patients were infants suffering from ependymoma of the posterior fossa, while the third was a 35-year-old man with astrocytoma of the temporal lobe. All cases were characterized by acute onset with fever, signs of meningeal irritation without any other neurological signs, and marked

pleocytosis. The diagnosis in 2 cases was made only at necropsy, and the third case was correctly diagnosed only after a delay. The possible occurrence of brain tumor and meningitis simultaneously was considered and seemed unlikely in our cases. A possible explanation for the clinical and

We previously reported a dramatically increased number of macrophages in

-bearing mice. In this study, we investigated the involvement of

in that phenomenon. CSF-1 responding cells as macrophages precursors increased significantly in number in the spleens of

-bearing mice as compared with those in normal mice. Splenic cells and sera from the
tumor
-bearing mice respectively expressed CSF-1 in mRNA and serum protein levels, but failed to express the other
CSF
(granulocyte-macrophage-CSF or IL-3). Nonadherent splenic mononuclear cells (< 0.5% macrophages) from normal mice proliferated and differentiated into mature macrophages in culture within 7 days with recombinant mouse CSF-1 (rCSF-1). Both macrophages harvested from
tumor
-bearing mice and those activated in vitro with rCSF-1 expressed mostly Mac-1, -2 (and -3) Ag, showed yeast phagocytosis, produced IL-1 but not IL-2 or IL-3, and displayed potent cytotoxicity against NK cell resistant Meth-A
tumor
cells. These macrophages also expressed lipocortin I mRNA and secreted lipocortin I protein, and suppressed mitogenic responses of splenic lymphocytes. rCSF-1-activated macrophages derived from nonadherent splenic cells expressed both CSF-1 and CSF-1 receptor (c-fms) mRNA. Administration of rCSF-1 into normal mice induced hemopoietic and immunologic alternations similar to those observed in

A 28-year-old woman was hospitalized in drowsy state with signs of increased intracranial pressure. CT scans revealed diffuse increased density with marked enhancement in the subarachnoid space, as well as ventricular dilatation. V-P shunt operation was performed to control intracranial pressure. Repeated cytological examinations of

couldn't determine the
tumor
origin. CT scan of thoracic spine showed a cystic
tumor
in its dorsal aspect. T2-weighted MRI revealed multiple spotty low intensity, specific to melanin granules, throughout the whole spine. Her thoracic spine was explored, and the intradural
tumor
was partially removed. Histopathological examination revealed the
tumor
cell which had dark nucleus with conspicuous nucleolus and cytoplasmic granules. These findings were compatible with malignant melanoma. Her general condition were deteriorated progressively and she died about 5 months after her admission. Postmortum examination showed diffuse leptomeningeal invasion of dark
tumor
throughout the entire central nervous system, and metastasis to peritoneum and omentum via V-P shunt system. Histopathological examination proved the
tumor
to be malignant melanoma. Electrone microscopic examination also revealed melanosome in the cytoplasm. Primary intracranial malignant melanoma is divided in two groups, nodular type and leptomeningeal type. In the latter type, early diagnosis is very difficult, just as in our case, because only a little tissue specimen can be obtained. In a case of leptomenigeal carcinomatosis, possibility of primary malignant melanoma, though rare, should always be kept in mind, and specific staining such as Fontana-Masson's staining should be tried.

Retrovirally expressed human CSF-1 receptor can induce CSF-1-dependent growth of IL-3-dependent hemopoietic cells FDC-P1. Here we show that expression of the human CSF-1 receptor also allowed FDC-P1 cells to grow in response to Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-I). The authentic receptor for IGF-I was identified by affinity cross-linking and binding analysis on both control (infected with a neo vector) and CSF-1 receptor expressing FDC-P1 cells. DNA and RNA analysis of these cells and of five clones of IGF-I responsive cells demonstrated that the IGF-I receptor gene was not rearranged nor was it abnormally expressed in IGF-I responsive cells. These results suggest that myeloid cells over-expressing
CSF
-1R (c-fms protooncogene product) might have a proliferative advantage over normal myeloid cells in a physiological situation, independently of the presence of CSF-1 or the capacity of the cells to respond to CSF-1. This would indicate a possible role for c-fms in human

Antitumoral macrophages (MAK) were obtained by the culture of human mononuclear cells in hydrophobic bags. From one cytapheresis, up to 10(9) mature macrophages could be purified by elutriation after one week of culture in IMDM medium in the presence of 2% human AB serum. These MAK cells were used for adoptive treatment in metastatic cancer patient with no dose-limiting toxicity. The present study aimed to improve the average MAK yield by addition of
GM-CSF
and of dihydroxy-cholecalciferol. The differentiated macrophages obtained presented higher antitumoral functionality in response to rh-IFN gamma than in their absence. These MAK presented all the differentiation antigens of cytotoxic macrophages compared to MAK cells differentiated in standard medium. They killed human

targets effectively in vitro at a low (1/1) effector/
tumor
ratio; furthermore, the antitumoral activity reached by MAK cells after IFN gamma activation appeared to be stabilized for several days.
