A study was made of the effect of dibunol and methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) on two
tumor
cell subpopulations of the Ehrlich-I. Ch. Ph. ascites strain, one of which is characterized with A + B + 2C and A + D + 2C--markers and the other one--with A1 + A2 + 2B + D + C markers. Dibunol that belongs to the class of inhibitors of free-radical processes was shown to bring about changes in cell subpopulations, the mode of changes depending on the dose and regime of treatment. The effect of MNU on the population resulted predominantly in the accumulation of cells with various chromosome aberrations. At early stages of
tumor progression
, aberrations were more pronounced in cells with marker chromosome "A" than in the cells with 44 chromosomes and markers A1 + A2 + 2B + D + C.

Cis-Dichlorodiammineplatinum (II) was administered in 23 patients with far advanced solid malignancies using a dose schedule of 50 mg/m2 every 3 weeks. All patients had previously progressive disease using conventional cytotoxic therapies. More than 50% of the patients had been pretreated with at least 4 different drugs. 9 patients, additionally, had been irradiated. In 4 instances there was objective
tumor
regression (duration: 1 to 4 months), in 7 patients
tumor progression
could be stopped for at least one month, 12 patients did not respond. By sufficient fluid administration combined with electrolyte substitution, furosemide and mannitol, no severe toxic side effects could be observed.

Antiestrogen compounds are relatively new in the treatment of breast cancer. A clinical trial of Nafoxidine therapy is being pursued in our institution. In a selected group of patients with metastatic breast cancer who had, in the past, undergone adrenalectomy, Nafoxidine therapy produced objective
tumor
regression in six out of ten patients. Of the six patients whose tumors contained demonstrable estrogen receptors, four showed regression (67%), one patient had stable disease, and one showed
tumor progression
. Of the four patients in whom estrogen receptor estimation was not done, two had, in the past, shown regression after endocrine therapy and they also showed regression of
tumor
with Nafoxidine therapy. In patients with metastatic breast carcinoma, who have undergone adrenalectomy in the past, a therapeutic trial with Nafoxidine may be worthwhile particularly in patients who have demonstrable estrogen receptor in the
tumor
of those who have in the past shown regression of
tumor
after endocrine therapy.

Umder study was the survival rate in 73 patients treated routinely with 5-fluoruracil for recurrences and metastases of gastric cancer. The survival of 33 patients, treated with the clinical effect proved to be reliably higher than that in 40 patients in whom no effect was gained (the time of 50% survival was 7.1 and 2.4 months accordingly). The compared groups of patients did not differ reliably in such prognostic factors as the
tumor
spread to the onset of chemotherapy and duration of the interval since the primary operation till
tumor progression
. It is concluded that the longer survival in patients treated with the effect is due to 5-fluoruracil administration.

The origination and development of cervical cancer occurs in the
tumor
field, which includes cellular and non-cellular components of the connective tissue and vessels adjacent to the epithelium. During each of these phases of cancer growth alterations in these components may be observed within certain boundaries which widen with the
tumor progression
. A removal of the
neoplasm
within the limits of the unchanged, as compared with the normality, components of the stroma and vessels would guarantee against the recurrence and is a reliable criterion of the radicality of surgery being a minimum for preinvasive and microinvasive cancer. The data obtained support the fact of a sufficiently full coincidence of the rate of stromal and vascular changes with the true boundaries of the
tumor
field.

Twenty patients previously treated with surgical resection, radiation therapy, and a nitrosourea for malignant gliomas of the brain were given VM-26 as a second chemotherapeutic agent when evidence of
tumor progression
occurred. Thirty-five percent achieved an arrest or decrease of neurologic symptoms, with a median length of response (arrest and
tumor
regression) of 22 weeks.

Cell factors of nonspecific immunity were estimated in 99 patients with different stages of melanoblastoma by delayed hypersensitivity skin test to tuberculin and DNCB (2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene). The skin test to DNCB is found to correlate with the clinical manifestations of the disease, while the skin test to tuberculin is not related with the degree of
tumor
spread. It is considered not rational to use the test concerned to define one of the immune cell factors in patients with melanoblastoma during the
tumor progression
.

The predictive value of serial levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in
tumor
monitoring was examined in 213 patients with ovarian cancer; each patient had been followed-up at monthly intervals for at least 12 months. CEA was not detectable throughout the period of observation in 35% of the patients. In general. patterns showing a disappearance of CEA or persistently low levels were associated with a good prognosis, whereas those showing a reappearance or highly elevated and rising levels were associated with a poor prognosis. A transient reappearance of CEA was observed in 10 patients; this did not appear to be associated with
tumor
recurrence or progression. "False positive" results were obtained in 6 patients in whom no
tumor
has been clinically detectable to date. "False negative" results were obtained in 4 patients with obvious
tumor progression
. In terms of a good or poor prognosis, the use of CEA levels was highly accurate in patients with minimal or no residual disease (97% and 89%, respectively); the rate fell to 62% in patients with extensive disease. As the clinical significance and limitations become better known, serial CEA levels should contribute substantially to the monitoring of patients with ovarian cancer.

Eighty-nine breast cancer patients were studied for the end result of therapy. During surgery, the anaesthesia administered was either halothane (61 cases) or ether (28 cases) mixture with nitrogen and oxygen. The holstead method for mastectomy was used for all cases. The results showed that the type of anaesthesia influenced the end results of therapy of breast cancer patients. The survival rates of patients receiving halothane were much higher than those of ether anaesthetized cases. The differences were most pronounced among cases who received both preoperative radiotherapy and postoperative chemotherapy, and in cases with metastasis into regional lymph node. A comparison of groups of patients on the basis of such parameters as the anaesthetic used, age and degree of
tumor progression
(according to TNM classification and post-operative histological assays) showed them to well matched. These results may be explained by the effects of the anaesthesia on the role of immunity in controlling
tumor
cell implantation and growth of metastasis.

The study of rat testis seminoma by the method of clonal analysis and ectopic transplantations has shown that typical and anaplastic types are different stages of
tumor progression
in the course of which atypical and anaplastic features of the seminoma cell elements increase. It does not seem inconceivable that the spermacytic form, never encountered during our investigation of 400 tumors, may be an independent seminoma form incapable of transforming into a typical one. A spindle-cell form of seminoma has been described most frequently occurring during transplantation of a typical seminoma into testis and during cloning. The obtained evidence permits to consider the small dark cells of the seminoma as being cambial cells of the
tumor
which occur abundantly in growing tumors, and are absent in tumors with ceased proloferating. At later stages of the seminoma development, the small dark cells may be absent, their function being performed practically by all
tumor
cells. Acinar structures found in part of clones from lungs and in the majority of transplants from eye anterior chamber suggest a histogenetic relationship between the typical seminoma and embryocarcinoma, and thus enable us to regard the latter as the most differentiated variants of the seminoma.
