In 3 patients undergoing therapy for germinal testis tumors (teratoma with choriocarcinoma, seminoma and teratocarcinoma) solitary pulmonary lesions developed consistent with metastatic tumor. After non-diagnostic medical pulmonary evaluation thoracotomy established benign lesions in each (sarcoidosis, Cryptococcus and postoperative inflammatory cyst). Surgical pathologic restaging to obviate the institution of unnecessary chemotherapy and/or radiation with its attended morbidity in such instances is stressed.

A strumal carcinoid arose in a benign cystic teratoma of the ovary. Ultrastructural studies demonstrated that both the solid acinotubular areas as well as the "follicular" components were comprised of light and dark cells that contained numerous secretory granules. These findings indicate that this neoplasm is a pure carcinoid tumor with a follicular pattern. The present study raises the question of whether all strumal carcinoids are indeed pure carcinoid neoplasms.

A case of teratoma of the thyroid gland in a 3-month-old child is reported. Present since birth, it presented as an acute respiratory emergency. This was relieved by surgical removal. The tumor showed normal thyroid tissue flanking the mass and at surgery was seen to derive its blood supply from the main thyroid vessels.

Chest scanning with 75Se-selenomethionine was performed in 59 cases of mediastinal diseases. All cases of vascular diseases, cystic tumors, and benign neurogenic tumor were negatively scanned. Parenchymatous teratoma, thymoma, malignant lymphoma, Castleman's tumor, epithelial tumors, tuberculous lymphadenitis, and sarcoidosis showed high positive rates. In myasthenic thymus without thymoma two out of 15 cases were positive. The scan images of the resected specimens and preoperative chest scannings coincided.

A study of 207 benign ovarian tumors seen at the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur between 1968 and 1975 was made to evaluate the clinical features that might be useful in the preoperative differentiation of mucinous cystadenoma, serous cystadenoma, and cystic teratoma of the ovary. This study indicated that the pertinent information included the mean age of the patient, the marital and menstrual status, and the estimated tumor size. The racial background was an additional factor in serous cystadenoma. Features like parity, the location of the tumor, and ABO blood group pattern were of no value in the preoperative differentiation.

A well-differentiated anterior mediastinal teratoma was removed from the right hemithorax of a 15-year-old girl presenting initially with ascites. Death followed a precipitous clinical deterioration from widespread sarcomatous metastatic disease. The true malignant nature of this tumor was not apparent on initial resection and evaded detection until shortly before death. These unique features prompted a review of the pertinent literature on malignant mediastinal teratoma in children. A similar case had not been reported previously.

A 25 year old woman underwent removal of a large, incidentally discovered cul de sac teratoma. It was solid but histologically mature and had given rise to multiple peritoneal implants of mature glial tissue. She was alive without evidence of disease 57 months later. This tumor appears to represent the extraovarian counterpart of previously reported ovarian teratomas with peritoneal gliomatosis.

An ovarian teratoma was diagnosed in a one-year-old, virgin female, Strain 13 guinea pig that died unexpectedly. The left ovary was replaced by a 5.5 x 5 x 3 cm mass. Microscopically, dense fibrous connective tissue, immature neuroepithelium, central and peripheral nervous tissue, respiratory epithelium and cartilage were observed. A similar mass, 1.2 x 1 x 1 cm, composed largely of embryonal neural tissue, was adhered to the abdominal side of the diaphragm. The latter mass probably resulted from transcoelomic seeding by the ovarian tumor.

True teratomas of the neck in adults are unusual neoplasms. Their clinicopathologic aspects are distinctly different from the counterpart tumor of the neonate and infant. While the latter is almost always a benign tumor, adult teratomas are both histologically and clinically malignant neoplasms. To our knowledge, we report the tenth case of a teratoma of the neck in an adult.
