The authors present a case of a highly atypical, possibly malignant, hibernoma. It presented as a deep-seated
tumor
in the retropharynx of a 57-year-old male. A review of possible similar cases is presented. The patient is without recurrence 4 years after complete excision and radiation therapy. The
tumor
must be differentiated from
liposarcoma
. The clinical potential must await the accumulation and observation of additional cases.

Malignant tumors of the small bowel are rare but carry a grave prognosis. Thirty-seven cases from the
Tumor
Registries of Brooke Army Medical Center. Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, Denver, Colorado, were retrospectively studied. Twenty-nine males and eight females ranging from five to 86 years were included in the combined series. Thirteen carcinoid tumors, eight adenocarcinomas, seven lymphosarcomas, five leiomyosarcomas, two reticulum cell sarcomas, one
liposarcoma
, and one mesenchymal cell sarcoma were found. Symptoms included intermittent crampy abdominal pain, intestinal obstruction, intestinal bleeding with anemia, and weight loss. The diagnosis was made on the basis of the clinical picture in addition to physical findings and pertinent x-ray contrast studies. The overall survival rate was 25%. The treatment of choice is surgical extirpation of the
tumor
whenever possible followed by appropriate adjunctive modalities.

Three patients with biopsy-proven
liposarcoma
were studied with inhalation of xenon-133, a gas highly soluble in fat. Increased concentration of radioactivity in the region of the
tumor
suggested the potential usefulness of radioxenon for the detection of lipomatous tumors.

The fifteenth reported case of paratesticular
liposarcoma
is presented, together with a review of the literature. The prognostic and therapeutic implications of this particular
neoplasm
are discussed.

Liposarcoma
is a rare
tumor
in the larynx. A case of such lesion occurring in a 52 year old male patient is described. This is the second case to be reported in the world literature. The patient underwent hemilaryngectomy and later total laryngectomy for a recurrent
tumor
and is living and well six years after diagnosis.

A patient with abdominal
liposarcoma
is described, and the treatment of this in children extremely uncommon
tumor
is discussed. After complete surgical excision, local irradion with 5000-6000 rad should be considered only if no vital organs are irradiated. Because of the high tendency for local recurrence and for distant metastases of this
tumor
a primary polychemotherapy beginning immediately after surgical excision is proposed as in cases of other solid tumors in children for instance rhabdomyosarcoma or fibrosarcoma. 18 months after the surgical excision and after the beginning of polychemotherapy our patient is clinically well without demonstrable tumor growth.

Liposarcomas
are common soft tissue tumors of the mediastinum and the retroperitoneum. Although they are rarely found in the greater omentum, when they occur in that area they can become enormous and be mistaken for pancreatic pseudocysts or ascitic distension. Recently, successful resection of a 10--kg
liposarcoma
of the omentum was performed at our institution. A description of the clinical presentation, preoperative assessment, and characteristics of this
tumor
are reported and the literature is surveyed. The use of adjuvant chemotherapy for these tumors is also discussed.

Liposarcoma
is a rare soft-tissue
tumor
. According to Enzinger, there are five subgoups. Histological criteria, the beginning, diagnostic and therapy of this
tumor
are represented. Results have been ascertained as follows, founded on eight cases of our own: 1. Adequate radical surgery and radiation therapy are needed in each case. 2. Recurrences are frequently, metastasition is rarely observed. 3. The prognosis is poor, if a recurrence appears within two years.

A total of 39 patients with sarcoma of the soft tissues were treated with carminomycin administered intravenously in doses of 10-15 mg twice a week, the total dose being 60-70 mg. The intervals between the courses were 1 month. The objective effect was observed in 17 out of 39 patients, i. e. 43.6%. The
tumor
decrease was registered in 6 out of 15 patients with leuomyosarcoma, in 3 out of 6 patients with synovial sarcoma, in 2 out of 4 patients with robdomyosarcoma, in 1 out of 4 patients with angiosarcoma, in 1 out of 3 patients with fibrosarcoma, in 1 patient with
liposarcoma
and in 3 out of 5 patients with stromal sarcoma of the uterus. A necessity for repeated treatment courses in spite of a positive effect or absence of the disease progress is underlined.

A case of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis is reported with a description of the gray scale ultrasound findings. The mass was indistinguishable in appearance from many other retroperitoneal processes, such as lymphoma, fibrosarcoma, and
liposarcoma
. In this case the mass had a well-defined anterior border, and the posterior border with the vena cava and aorta was difficult to demonstrate. The sound transmission properties of the mass were similar to those of normal soft tissue structures. The mass, which showed no echoes at moderate gain levels, produced weak echoes at high gain levels. By marking the projection of the
tumor
as seen by ultrasound on the skin and then obtaining an x ray with a lead wire on these marks, a comparison of ultrasound with other studies is possible. This also helps in demonstrating the location and extent of the mass. Ultrasound is suggested as a useful noninvasive technique for following the progress of retroperitoneal fibrosis.
