The authors report a case of a cerebellopontine (CP) angle
lipoma
with a very unusual histological appearance. The 38-year-old male patient suffered vertigo, left tinnitus, and left hearing disturbance. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a nonenhanced low-density area and a high-intensity region in the left CP angle, respectively. The
tumor
, which was only partially removed because of its tight adhesion to the VIIIth nerve and brainstem, consisted of mature lipocytes and contained a piece of cartilage, which is highly unusual.

A case of histologically confirmed benign
lipoma
of the right atrium is presented. Magnetic resonance imaging was successfully used to visualize and characterize the
tumor
previously detected by echocardiography. T1-weighted MR was superior to echocardiography and was in surgical agreement with examination in identifying the relationship of the
lipoma
to the right atrial wall, the coronary sinus, and the interatrial septum. Comparison of measurements of the
tumor
's signal intensities on T1- and T2-weighted images and T2 relaxation time with those of surrounding myocardium and mediastinal fat allowed a preoperative diagnosis of
lipoma
. Magnetic resonance may obviate surgical intervention in selected asymptomatic cases where the diagnosis of benign
lipoma
appears likely.

The epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) is expressed by the majority of colorectal cancers but has not previously been investigated as a target for radiation-labeled monoclonal antibodies (MoAb) in the imaging of patients with colorectal cancer. A rat IgG2a MoAb that recognizes EMA, ICR2, was labeled with Indium-111 (100 megabecquerel per milligram [MBq/mg]MoAb) using the bicyclic anhydride of the chelating agent diethylene triamine pentacetic acid (ccDTPA) and was administered intravenously to 22 patients known to have or thought to have colorectal cancer. Daily gamma camera imaging was performed for 3 days during the time between the administration of the radiation-labeled antibody and surgical procedure. At operation, the biopsies were done of the tumors and the normal colon, and the uptake of radiation-labeled MoAb was measured in a gamma well-counter. Immunocytochemistry for EMA expression also was done on resected tumors. Independent unblinded and blinded reporting was done on all scans. The sensitivity of 111In-ICR2 for detecting cancers preoperatively was 80% and 60%, respectively, on unblinded and blinded reporting, and the corresponding specificity 20% and 60%. The low unblinded specificity was attributable to a false-positive localization in severely dysplastic benign tumors (n = 2) and inflammatory tissue (n = 2). Liver metastases present in three patients were cold relative to normal liver. Lymph node metastases were localized in 1 of 6 patients preoperatively. The mean absolute uptake of 111In-ICR2 in
tumor
tissue was 7.75 +/- 3.77 x 10(-3) percent of injected dose per gram, and the ratio to normal colon was 2.10 +/- 0.92:1. On immunohistochemistry, EMA was expressed by 16 of the 17 primary cancers, both dysplastic adenomas, and all nodal metastatic deposits. EMA-negative tumors (1 cancer + 1 colonic
lipoma
) had negative antibody scans, and patients whose
tumor
was negative or only focally positive for EMA expression had lower
tumor
/normal colon ratios of radioactivity (1.30 +/- 0.26 versus 2.45 +/- 0.65, P = 0.005) on gamma well-counting of excised specimens. These results suggest a possible role for 111In-ICR2 in the detection of colorectal cancer and metastases but not its liver deposits.

A 36-year-old female presented with vertigo and worsening of a right hearing loss with tinnitus. Clinical and radiologic investigations revealed a
tumor
of the right internal acoustic meatus, first diagnosed as a neuroma. Histologic study of surgical samples led to a final diagnosis of
lipoma
. Cranial nerve lipomas are rare and usually located in the cerebellopontine angle.
Lipomas
confined to the internal acoustic meatus are much rarer. The review of the literature however, shows that their histologic characteristics and their behavior are identical to those of cerebellopontine angle lipomas, and that a minimal surgical resection is therefore advised.

A 45-year-old man was admitted because of systolic murmur after routine medical checking. Echocardiography and cardiac catheterization revealed a large mass in the ventricular septum which bulged into right ventricular cavity with pressure gradient of 29 mmHg. The diagnosis of cardiac
lipoma
was made by CT scanning which showed the mass with attenuation values of -94 Hounsfield units. MR imaging demonstrated the mass with high signal intensity which corresponded to that of subcutaneous fatty tissue. The
tumor
was resected through the right ventricular incision with the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. It was yellow, elastic soft, sized 6.5 x 4.3 x 3.5 cm, and weighed 44.7 g. On histological examination, the
tumor
was composed of mature fatty tissues contained with myocardial fibers. After operation, he had split of the ventricular septum, which was closed primarily after removal of the
lipoma
, and left-to-right shunt. Patch reinforcement was performed at the right ventricular side of the septum on the postoperative 18th day. Postoperative electrocardiogram showed left axis deviation and complete right bundle branch block. This finding seems to be resulted from injury to the anterior branch of left bundle. The postoperative course was uneventful. This patient is the second case of removal of cardiac
lipoma
in the ventricular septum on review of the literature in Japan.

The Currarino triad consists of an anorectal malformation, a presacral
tumor
and a sacrum defect. A new case is reported in a female neonate. The diagnosis was suspected because of delayed emission of meconium associated with an occlusion syndrome. It was confirmed by bone imaging, ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging. A colostomy was performed on day 7 then closed on day 43 after several rectal dilation were carried out. A presacral
lipoma
was operated on at 10 months. The 56 cases reported in the literature are reviewed.

A patient with normal motor and intellectual development suffered headache; especially over the occipital area; and, blurring of vision for five months. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a
lipoma
in the quadrigeminal/superior cerebellar cistern compressing of the aqueduct, inferior colliculus, and vermis. Using the modified sitting position, the
tumor
was almost totally removed via the infratentorial supracerebellar approach. Postoperative headache and blurring of vision had been improved, but ataxic gait and mild diplopia due to right superior oblique palsy was noted. Ataxic gait was disappeared in half a month and diplopia in two months respectively.

A primary tumor composed of mature adipose tissue and smooth muscle occurring in the anterior abdominal wall of a 46 yr old Filipino woman is described. The
tumor
was not attached to the uterus, but had an appearance similar to a uterine lipoleiomyoma. It appeared as a soft, rubbery, encapsulated 11 cm ovoid mass with a uniform, white cut surface. Histologically, there were long intersecting bundles of bland smooth muscle mixed with nests of mature fat cells. The presence of differentiated smooth muscle was confirmed by fuchsinophilia, desmin positivity and electron microscopy. The patient also had 6 intramural leiomyomas, an area of adenomyosis, a subcutaneous
lipoma
of the subscapular region and chronic schistosomiasis of the appendix and left adnexa.

The imaging findings of 48 cases of renal neoplasms, including excretory urography, ultrasonography, CT and MRI were compared. This series comprised 32 renal cell carcinoma, 5 renal pelvic carcinoma, 4 metastatic renal
tumor
, 4 renal angiomyolipoma, 2 angioma and 1
lipoma
. The comparison of these 4 methods was done with emphasis on their respective merits and disadvantages. Urography remains the major method of detecting the renal tumors. Ultrasound is economic, rapid and sensitive, often used for screening. CT is very useful in the diagnosis and staging of renal tumors, especially for diagnosing small sized renal carcinoma. Its diagnostic accuracy is higher than the others as it offers better spatial and density resolution. MRI may be used in case CT fails to make a diagnosis or the patient is allergic to the contrast media. The diagnostic accuracy may be improved by proper use of the above four methods.

A case of a 51-year-old woman with a
lipoma
-like
tumor
on the right arm which showed rapid recurrence after the first simple excision is reported. On the second surgical operation, a
lipoma
-like
tumor
with extensive growth between the biceps muscle and brachialis muscle of the right arm was noted. Histological examination revealed almost mature fat cells and scattered atypical lipoblast-like cells. For the treatment of an atypical inter-muscular
lipoma
, complete excision is necessary, although very extensive treatment is not recommended.
