A case is reported in which a very malignant neoplasm appeared clinically to be a pregnancy
tumor
or a
hemangioma
. There was, of course, no question as to the cause of death in this particular case. It was of interest because of the rarity of the
tumor
, the metastasis to the oral cavity, and the fact that the final diagnosis was established from pathologic examination. The case demonstrates, with emphasis, the great importance of biopsy and routine pathologic examination of all tissue for accurate and correct diagnosis, regardless of its clinical appearance.

Pathological examinations of 28 wild-caught Mastomys natalensis from Sierra Leone, 14 of which were positive for Lassa virus by tissue culture, are reported. The high frequency of neoplastic and degenerative diseases observed among older animals in closed colonies of M. natalensis were not observed in the wild animals studied. This is probably a reflection of the age distribution of the study population, since the life expectancy of wild Mastomys is less than a year. Inflammatory lesions were nonetheless identified, some of which were similar to those described in laboratory colonies. Frequent lesions were myocarditis (54%), myositis (32%), interstitial pneumonitis (50%), intercapillary glomerulosclerosis (36%), and acute nephrosis (14%). Follicular and nodular lymphoid hyperplasia were evident in the spleen (74%) and Peyer's patches (64%). Lymphoid cell accumulations were prominent in the salivary glands (36%), periportal hepatic region (25%), lungs (32%), perivascular regions (36%), and kidney (21%). Cytomegalic inclusion body sialoadenitis was common (25%). Coccidiosis was evident in the intestinal tract (25%), kidney (25%), and muscle (21%). One
neoplasm
, a parahepatic
haemangioma
, was observed histologically.Mean body weights and lengths for virus-positive animals (33 g and 9.2 cm) and virus-negative animals (54 g and 12.2 cm) showed that virus-positive animals were smaller in weight and shorter in length. Since the age of the animals could not be determined, these differences remain unexplained. In comparison with virus-negative animals, virus-positive Mastomys had higher frequencies of splenic follicular hyperplasia (82% against 50%), myocarditis (79% against 29%), perivascular lymphoid cell accumulation (57% against 7%), myositis (50% against 14%), and cytomegalic inclusion body sialoadenitis (36% against 14%). The frequency of lymphoid hyperplasia of Peyer's patches was high in both groups of animals (71% and 57%).The presence of Lassa virus, small size, myocarditis, and lymphoid perivasculitis appeared to be interrelated, but larger and better controlled studies are required to elucidate the relationship.

A case of diffuse cavernous
hemangioma
of the heart discovered incidentally during life is reported. Resection of the
tumor
was impossible at operation. Two similar cases were found in the literature. Radation therapy is suggested, and the importance of a simple blood pool scan in the investigation of paracardiac masses is stressed.

A case is presented of a fifty-six year old man with a thyroid
hemangioma
presenting as a neck mass with tracheal deviation and unilateral vocal cord paralysis. A standard thyroid scan yielded equivocal findings. The diagnosis was determined preoperatively by the use of a 99m-technetium angiogram that disclosed the vascular nature of the lesion. Subsequent arteriography demonstrated the main arterial supply of the mass to be from both inferior thyroid arteries. Operative removal of the mass was accomplished through a standard transverse cervical incision. Pathologic study revealed that the vascular
tumor
involved both the surrounding normal thyroid parenchyma and also a microfollicular adenoma. This case points out the value of utilizing all available diagnostic means in atypical cases of thyroid disease.

Intramuscular hemangioma is a distinct type of
hemangioma
occurring within skeletal muscle and making up less than one per cent of all hemangiomas. They occur most often in the trunk and extremities, perhaps beacuse of the larger muscle volume in thos areas. 13.5 per cent of intramuscular hemangiomas do occur in the head and neck region and for this reason they should be considered in the differential diagnosis of head and neck masses. The first case of an intramuscular
hemangioma
of the digastric muscle is presented and confirmed by electron microscopic sections. An interesting finding in this
tumor
is the proliferation of both endothelial cells and pericytes.
Hemangiomas
are classified according to vessel size; "large vessel" cavernous, "small vessel" capillary, and "mixed". Various etiologies and modalities of treatment are discussed, and total excision with ligation of the feeding vessels is advocated to prevent the high incidence of later recurrence.

The cerebral sequential scintigraphy enables a process to be described according to its hemodynamics (Stage I), its degree of vascularization (Stage II), and the extent of the localized disturbance of the blood-brain barrier function (Stage III). For a given lesion, typical scintigraphic behaviour patterns can be described. This report presents the results of a prospective series with 1722 patients examined using this method. The accuracy of the different scintigraphic diagnoses, according to
tumor
type, was: cerebrovascular accident with brain infarction - 92% (= CVA), metastasis - 90%, bone or meningital process - 89%, malignant glioma - 91%, meningioma - 74%, highly differentiated glioma - 67%, chronic subdural hematoma - 54%, A-V
angioma
- 54%, brain abscess - 45%. The differential diagnosis between brain tumor and CVA with infarction was possible in approximately 97% of the patients, the differential diagnosis of intracranial space-occupying lesion versus CVA with infarction in approximately 95%. There were 14 false positive results recorded (0.8% of the 1722 patients).

Two patients with bleeding renal hamartoma are presented. The diagnosis of angiolipoleiomyoma and
hemangioma
was made by angiography. The literature is reviewed and the differential diagnoses are discussed. The difficulties concerning differential diagnoses from
neoplastic disease
is emphasized.

Primary hepatic infantile hemangioendothelioma is a rare
tumor
, characterized by its appearance in early infancy as well as by the frequent association with various malformations and with similar angiomatous tumors of other tissues and organs. It may be single or multinodular and it is often complicated by severe peritoneal hemorrhage. Tow histologic types of this
tumor
are known: tipe 1 is sharply circumscribed and is considered similar to so called capillary hypertrophic
hemangioma
, while type 2, by showing aggressive, infiltrative and anaplastic features, is rather close to angiosarcoma. Clinical and pathological data concerning two cases of type 2 primary hepatic infantile hemangioendothelioma are reported. On the basis of experimental results and epidemiological data on hepatic angiosarcoma of adults, a possible etiopathogenetic relationship with maternal exposure during pregnancy to dangerous environmental factors is postulated.

An infant with a large occipital hemangioendothelioma with thrombocytopenia, anemia, and hypofibrinogenemia--Kasabach-Merritt syndrome--was reported. The case, a male neonate is unique, for this is the first report with this syndrome in whom the large
hemangioma
was noted at birth on the midocciput simulating the occipital encephalomeningocele. With the development of thrombocytopenia of 84,000 per mm3, hypofibrinogenemia of 92 mg/dl, anemia (erythrocyte 193 X 10(4) per mm3, hemoglobin 5.9 g/dl, hematocrit 16 vol%), hepato-splenomegalia, enlargement and bluish discoloration of the
tumor
noted on the 21/2 months of life, total excision was intended prior to the expected occurence of the systemic purpura. The patient received fresh whole blood transfusion immediately prior to surgery, and the total excision was successfully performed. Excessive bleeding was not encountered. Abrupt rise in the platelet count, red blood cell count, hemoglobin and hematocrit to normal range was noted at the first postoperative day; he was discharged on the 17th day after surgery. Nineteen months' follow-up showed normal hematologic findings with good somatic and mental development. The specimen weighing 250 g. revealed benigh hemangioendothelioma. Silver impregnation demonstrated lobular aggregates of small vascular channels. Papillary projection of interstitial cells into the lumen, reaction of the endothelium of the vessels, newly formed thrombus, ishemic necrosis and hemorrhage, hyaline degeneration of interstitial tissue were noted. These findings suggested the disseminated intravascular coagulation within the
tumor
followed by fibrinolysis accounts for loss of blood corpuscles, platelet, fibrinogen and clotting factors, which leads ultimately to the consumption coagulopathy and diffuse bleeding.
