A 30-year old white woman was seen with a 2 month history of decreased vision in the right eye. She was 5 months pregnant at this time. Examination showed a large, slightly elevated choroidal hemangioma along the superior temporal arcade. Overlying subretinal fluid involved the superior part of the macula. After the delivery of the child, the tumor regressed. This exacerbation and regression of a choroidal hemangioma during pregnancy and delivery were documented with fundus photography and fluorescein angiography.

A case of the recently described vascular tumor, the arteriovenous hemangioma, is presented herein. Clinical and histologic differentiation from other benign, acquired vascular lesions is stressed.

A 74-year-old male cigarette smoker presented with hemoptysis and a right upper lobe infiltrate. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed a small (1 x 2 mm) benign-appearing lesion in the right upper lobe bronchus which, on biopsy, was a submucosal capillary hemangioma. This is an exceedingly rare tumor and, to our knowledge, hemoptysis from these lesions in the proximal bronchi has not been previously reported.

A young woman with only minimal proptosis from a cavernous hemangioma of the left orbit complained of monocular obscurations of vision evoked by right alteral gaze. By analysis of the symptoms, we excluded direct compression of the globe, the optic nerve, and the ophthalmic artery as well as a retinal electrophysiologic phenomenon as a cause of the obscuration. Some vascular phenomenon occurring within the muscle cone appeared to be the most likely explanation. Computer tomography in various positions of gaze revealed the dynamic anatomical relationship between optic nerve and tumor. During adduction, the nerve pressed against and shifted beneath the tumor in the region where the ophthalmic artery crosses over it.

A 27 year old man developed a pyramidal syndrome with hypoesthesia up to the level of D8, over a period of two months. Radiographic examination revealed the presence of an angioma of D8. Selective angiography demonstrated that there was epidural invasion as well as an angioma of the vertebral body, and enabled embolization of the 2 pedicles of the lesion to be performed. This produced only a partial, temporary improvement, and a posterior epidural tumor was found and removed by operation. The histological appearance of the tumor was that of a cavernoma, and rapid and permanent recovery of normal neurological function was obtained after the operation. The authors discuss the pathogenicity of the neurological disorders associated with single bone angiomas, and the problems raised by their treatment.

A clinically silent giant hepatic hemangioma was diagnosed following, and as a result of, minor trauma. Liver scan, arteriography and liver biopsy were suggestive of an avascular mass, but laparotomy established that the tumor was a hemangioma. Surgical treatment and complete recovery followed. These benign primary hepatic tumors are usually discovered incidentially. Their presentation and management are discussed.

We have reported one case of a rare combination of multiple primary malignancies in the stomach, a leiomyosarcoma and an adenocarcinoma in a 72-year-old male. He also had a leiomyoma of the stomach and a cavernous hemangioma of the spleen. Since he has had two malignant and two benign tumors, it would appear that this patient has a tendency to develop neoplasia.

The clinical records of 101 patients (biopsies done on 48) with capillary hemangiomas of the orbit, orbit and lids, and lids were analyzed. Lesions predominated in females and typically appeared at birth or within the first two months of life. The superior orbit and lids were definite sites of predilection. Telltale periocular cutaneous involvement occurred in one third of the cases. Pure proptosis caused by a deep orbital tumor without an anterior component was found in seven cases. Proptosis in general was mild, but in two cases was severe enough to cause corneal exposure. Findings suprortive of a diagnosis of an orbital or periorbital hemangioma include (1) change in tumor size on crying (46%); (2) a dark vascular coloration to the subcutaneous tissue (80%); and (3) the existence of nonperiocular strawberry marks (25). Diagnostic tests of most value were plain radiography, ultrasonography, computed axial tomography, and arteriography. The complication rate in the 50 patients followed up over five years was 80% (60% with amblyopia). Present treatment modalities do not appear to be achieving the desired goals of a good cosmetic and functional outcome. Radiotherapy and corticosteroids are both effective in individual cases, but many lesions are resistant to all forms of present treatment. Amblyopia therapy is difficult and often unsuccessful in these patients.

The authors describe 9 cases of primitive tumors of the small gut (3 adenocarcinomas, 2 lymphosarcomas, 1 fibroma, 1 angioma, and 2 leiomyosarcomas, one being the cause of active hemorrhage). In all cases the tumors were diagnosed only at operation, which was invariably necessitated by complications. Seven patients underwent emergency surgery for intestinal obstruction; one underwent an exploratory laparotomy for recurrent intestinal bleeding caused by an angioma of the ileum; and the last of this series (exceptional enough to warrant separate reporting elsewhere) was operated upon as an emergency case when the tumor, precisely a leiomyosarcoma, was perforated and actively bleeding.

A lesion resembling a retinal angioma is reported in a 52-year-old man with hemoglobin S-C disease. Following surgery to destroy the tumor, the patient died. Postmortem examination confirmed sickle cell disease and the ocular findings revealed an angioma on the anterior side of the retina. It is believed this is the first report of sickle cell disease showing a large retinal angioma.
