The carcinogenicity of 1-(5-nitro-2-thiazolyl)-2-imidazolidinone (niridazole), a widely used schistosomicide, was examined in Swiss mice and Syrian golden hamsters. Schistosoma mansoni infection was evaluated as a cofactor. High incidences of drug-related neoplasms of the forestomach, lungs, mammary glands, urinary tract, and ovaries were found in mice, and tumors of the forestomach and urinary tract were found in hamsters.
Infection
with schistosomes had no apparent influence on
tumor
incidence. The results indicated a need for reevaluation of the possible carcinogenicity of this drug in man and suggested that care should be taken during its clinical use.

Four cases of gastric pseudolymphoma are presented which illustrate the spectrum of presenting features. At times the differential diagnosis includes inflammatory and
infectious diseases
of the stomach as well as gastric
neoplasia

Prostatography by perineal puncture is a remarkable technique for examination of patients with prostatic disorders. The authors prefer transperineal puncture of the prostate for the following reasons: 1) It is carried out under the guidance of the free right index finger in the rectum; 2)
Infection
has never been observed; 3) Stimultaneous biopsies taken from various regions of the prostate, for histological examination, is possible on changing the position of the needle. Perineal prostatography enabled one to: 1. Precisely see the extent of a cnacer. 2. Discover lesions provoked by the
tumor
(necrotic zones, opacities). 3. Assert that extracapsular extension has taken place when the contrast medium has diffusep outside of the prostatic capsule. 4. Possibly establish the presence of latent carcinoma within a prostatic adenoma. These being all useful notions for treatment.

This is a report of two dogs in which osteosarcomas arose in association with metallic orthopedic implants. One
neoplasm
occurred in the distal humerus of a 12-year-old Doberman Pinscher. A stainless steel intramedullary pin had been implanted in the bone 11 years previously. Upon removal, corrosion of the pin was noted. The second
neoplasm
arose in the proximal tibia of a 12-year-old Irish Wolfhound. Six years previously, a fracture of the tibia had been repaired with a plate and screws made of the same type stainless steel, type 316L, by the same manufacturer. No corrosion appeared to have occured.
Infection
had not occured in either animal.

The pathologist must obtain X-rays before attempting to make a diagnosis in a bone
tumor
. Errors are made with both benign and malignant lesions associated with calluses.
Infection
may stimulate a malignant bone
tumor
radiographically and pathologically. Secondary aneurysmal bone cyst may dominate the radiographic and pathologic findings and obscure the primary diagnosis. Osteoblastomas are becoming increasingly difficult to diagnose. The question of whether such an entity can become malignant has not been resolved. Cartilagenous tumors are often difficult to diagnose and the pathologist must not only rely on histologic findings, but in particular pay attention to the radiographic pattern which is often diagnostic. Accuracy of diagnosis in Ewing's sarcoma is essential because the treatment now can result in a cure rate of almost 40%. Certain lesions such as lymphoma or osteosarcoma can mimic this
tumor
. To re-emphasize the problem, the pathologist must have all the clinical information before attempting a diagnosis of a bone
tumor
and without the pertinent X-ray, errors are almost inevitable.

Infection
of genetically resistant C57BL/6 mice with Friend leukemia virus resulted in a marked but transient immunodepression of the humoral immune response to sheep erythrocytes. The primary immune response to sheep erythrocytes was depressed in mice infected 1 or 3 days before challenge immunization, but no suppression was observed when the interval was greater. The suppression coincided with the time of transient viremia in the mice. The secondary immune response to sheep erythrocytes was inhibited when virus was injected within a few days before booster immunization. Induction of immunologic "memory" to sheep erythrocytes was also blocked in C57BL/6 mice given virus before priming with the SRBC. The immunosuppressive activity appeared due to a marked but transient effect of the virus on antibody precursor cells, as ascertained by cell transfer experiments. These observations are pertinent to the general question to the cellular site of action of immunosuppressive
tumor
viruses and the relationship between immunosuppression and the neoplastic properties of the RNA viruses.

An outbreak of lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus infections occurred in Medical Center personnel at the University of Rochester in 1972-1973. A total of 48 infections was discovered, 31 in staff of the radiation therapy area, 12 in the staff of the Vivarium facility, and 5 in other individuals who worked in the Medical Center. Twenty-one of the infections were associated with recent febrile illness with myalgia. Epidemiologic and virologic studies indicated that the source of the infection was Syrian hamsters which were used in
tumor
research; the
tumor
cell lines themselves were shown to be contaminated with LCM virus and probably represented the original source of contamination of the Rochester facility.
Infection
occurred not only through direct contact with infected animals but also from mere presence in the room where the animals were held. This outbreak emphasizes the need for restricting access to animal quarters and for surveillance of hamsters and
tumor
cell lines and indicate the necessity of separating animal facilities from patient-care facilities.

Twenty-eight patients with cerebral tumors were evaluated after craniotomy with combined radionuclide techniques in order to assess presence or absence of
tumor
recurrence. The combination of a positive pertechnetate or Tc-phosphate scan with a positive gallium scan strongly indicates the presence of recurrent or residual tumor.
Infection
may also cause uptake but was easily distinguished by the distribution. Negative gallium scans with positive technetium scans were indicative of non-recurrence in this series.

A total of 190 patients being treated or followed up for urothelial carcinoma have been studied by the serial estimation of their urinary and plasma CEA levels. Only 46% of patients with a urothelial
neoplasm
present have a raised urinary CEA level.
Infection
or ileal conduit urine vitiate the result as they produce high CEA levels in the urine in the absence of any
neoplastic disease
. The accuracy of urinary CEA estimations is compared with that of cytology. Plasma CEA levels do not serve as a useful guide to the presence of extra-urinary tract tumour spread if taken as isolated readings. However, serial plasma CEA estimations may indicate that metastatic disease is present several months before its detection by the more usual clinical methods in a minority of patients.

Ours is a developing country. We have still not controlled the common
infectious diseases
which are extinct in the West; therefore, our limited resources are spent on study of epidemiology of
infectious diseases
. My conclusions on epidemiology of cancer of the larynx are drawn from observations made of the clinical material over a period of 25 years. I have come to the conclusion that the smoked tobacco and the slaked lime in the Indian "Pan" are the two important carcinogenic agents. Poor nutrition appears to be carcinogenic. It requires study and confirmation at a cellular level. Misuse of voice does seem to be the cause of laryngeal cancer. Racial, genetic and other environmental factors, including pollution have not contributed to the increased incidence of laryngeal cancers. The common histological types of laryngeal cancer are known. My observations on certain biological behavior of the
tumor
have been helpful. 1. An exophytic growth is less infiltrative; its metastatic mass reflects the same characteristics. 2. Certain anaplastic tumors can flout all laws of cancer spread and metastasize in distal organs. 3. Presence of reticular hyperplasia in peripheral lymph nodes is of good prognostic value.
