The first case of
transitional cell carcinoma
of the bulbous urethra occurring 8 months after radiation therapy for mixed ductal and adenocarcinoma of the prostate is presented. The significance of the sequential appearance of these tumors is discussed. Periodic endoscopic evaluation appears warranted following the diagnosis of
transitional cell carcinoma
of the prostate to ensure early recognition of secondary urethral lesions or bladder extension of the
tumor
.

The effect of human chorionic gonadotropin on the in vitro cytotoxicity of lymphocytes against human
transitional cell carcinoma
cells was studied in 9 patients using the microcytotoxicity assay. Lymphocytes from 6 patients were cytotoxic against
transitional cell carcinoma
cells. However, in the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin the cytotoxicity of these lymphocytes against transitional carcinoma cells was diminished. Human chorionic gonadotropin alone or in combination with non-cytotoxic lymphocytes did not change the growth of target cells and human chorionic gonadotropin did not have a direct toxic effect on lymphocytes alone. These results demonstrate that human chorionic gonadotropin can inhibit the cytotoxic action of lymphocytes against human
tumor
cells in vitro. Human chorionic gonadotropin may contribute to the poor prognosis associated with certain human chorionic gonadotropin-secreting human tumors.

A case of
transitional cell carcinoma
of the prostatic and anterior pelvic urethra of a cat is presented. Primary urinarty tract neoplasms in the cat are rare, and
transitional cell carcinoma
with major involvement of the urethra has not been previously reported. The appearance and location of this
tumor
made differentiation from a prostatic carcinoma difficult. The clinical presentation consisted of emaciation, constipation, anorexia, and hematuria.

Selective renal arteriography was done in 5 patients with
transitional cell carcinoma
of the renal pelvis and upper ureter. In 2 cases, the presence of
tumor
vessels was unequivocally diagnostic. In the remaining 3 cases, the arteriographic changes were not as prominent but were suggestive of
neoplasm
and were helpful in differentiating other causes of filling defects in the collecting system.

Urine specimens obtained periodically from weanling male F344 rats fed 0.2% N-[4-(5-nitro-2-furyl)-2-thiazolyl]formamide (FANFT) for 25 weeks followed by control diet for an additional 35 weeks, were examined by light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). LM revealed red blood cells and atypical transitional cells in the urine at 25 and 43 weeks, when microinvasive
transitional cell carcinoma
was present. Malignant transitional cells were seen in the urine by LM at 60 weeks, when muscle invasion was present in histologic sections. However, SEM showed pleomorphic microvilli on exfoliated urothelial cells as early as 10 weeks after the beginning of FANFT administration, and the microvilli became increasingly pleomorphic as the bladder lesions progressed to muscle invasion at 60 weeks. Noninvasive tumors were present in histologic sections of rat bladders examined at the end of 10 weeks of FANFT administration. The numerous microvilli on exfoliated bladder
tumor
cells were in sharp contrast to the peaked microridges of normal exfoliated superficial cells.

The symptoms and physical findings in patients with
transitional cell carcinoma
of the prostate were similar to those in patients with prostatic adenocarcinoma. Usually the
neoplasm
was poorly differentiated and advanced when the diagnosis was first established. Osseous metastases were commonly osteolytic. Frequently, elevations of serum alkaline or acid phosphatase levels were associated with metastasis. Tartrate-inhibited fractions of the serum acid phosphatase were not elevated. The best form of treatment is radical ablation of the prostate and radiation therapy is next best. Because these neoplasms are not hormonally dependent, hormonal manipulation is not indicated. Prognosis for patients with this malignancy is guarded.

Urine specimens from 77 patients with transitional cell tumors of the urinary bladder, 15 patients with inflammatory lesions and five normal individuals were analyzed. The two nuclepore slides of all patients with
neoplastic disease
contained over 100 neoplastic cells and in one-half of the cases over 1,000
tumor
cells were present. The percentage of neoplastic cells to atypical and normal cells ranged from 25 per cent for papillary carcinomas, Grade I, to 36 per cent for poorly differenciated carcinomas. There were no significant differences of the cytoplasmic features but the nuclei of malignant cells were slightly more hyperchromatic, contained significantly more nuclei and were characterized by a coarsely rather than finely granular nucleoplasm. The cell size of 5,970 cells and the nuclear size of 8,455 cells was determined by planimetry. Normal transitional cells averaged 341 square microns and were larger than those exfoliated from tumors. The mean nuclear area was 36 square microns for normal cells, 52 square microns for benign atypical cells, 54 square microns for cells from papillary carcinoma, Grade I, 78 square microns for papillary carcinomas, Grade II, and 90 square microns for
transitional cell carcinoma
, Grades III and IV. The study indicated that significant quantitative differences exist between normal transitional cells and those exfoliated from moderately and poorly differentiated transitional cell carcinomas. The cells exfoliated from papillomas or papillary transitional cell carcinomas, Grade I, closely resemble hyperplastic or atypical transitional cells which in turn can be differentiated from normal urothelial cells.

A case of
transitional cell carcinoma
of the renal pelvis in a 4-month-old japanese boy is reported. This patient is the youngest one described in the literature with a
tumor
of this type. The differential points of Wilms tumor and other types of neonatal renal tumors are discussed.

A case is presented of bilateral
transitional cell carcinoma
of the renal pelvis with extension of the
tumor
to involve the renal parenchyma bilaterally. Unilateral complete absence of function was demonstrated and pathological study correlated the absence of function with complete replacement and destruction of the renal parenchyma by transitional cell
tumor
. Segmental absence of function of the contralateral kidney is also correlated pathologically with complete replacement of the involved renal segment with
tumor
. Total replacement of renal parenchyma by
transitional cell carcinoma
of the renal pelvis should be considered in the evaluation of renal non-function.

Indicators of the relative contribution of epidermis and dermis to the pathogenesis of psoriasis may be obtained from clinical observation. We studied a case of clinically characteristic and histologically identifiable plaque of chronic psoriasis occurring over
transitional cell carcinoma
metastatic to the dermis. The
tumor
substantially replaced the usual fibrous structure of the dermis, showing that a normally structured dermis is not requisite for the presence of psoriasis.
