After a classification in benign and malignant tumours and in pigmented and non-pigmented growth, attention is drawn to the fact that most of the tumours lie in the palpebral fissure and are benign. Leukoplakia is a clinical description but not a diagnosis. Both the benign and the malignant growths can be called Leukoplakia. The intra-epithelial epithelioma is often incorrectly diagnosed as Bowen's disease. This disease of the skin and the intraepithelial epithelioma of the limbus are histologically quite different, and therefore the term Bowen's disease is incorrect. Not all the various tumours occur with the same incidence, e. g. the squamous cell carcinoma occurs more often in some countries than in others. The malignant melanomas of the conjunctiva are not so malignant as in the caruncle or cornea. In the conjunctiva secundary melanomas can occur after penetration of an intraocular melanoma through the sclera; similary metastases can occur in the form of epibulbar tumours. In all cases the epibulbar tumour should be excised very carefully and a histological examination is necessary for the diagnosis.

Description of clinical and histopathologic findings in a case of malignant epithelioma of the retinal pigment epithelium. This very rare neoplasm usually develops at the equator of the globe or more peripherally and is practically always mistaken for a malignant melanoma of the choroid. Metastasis of this tumor, revealing an infiltrative and destructive growth pattern, has not been described unequivocally.

Invasive epithelioma of the uterine cervix spreads in two different ways. Locally, tumour involves progressively upon neighbouring structures (vagina parametrium, uterine corpus, bladder, rectum). Regionally, lymphatic dissemination occur preociously moving towards the nodes of the pelvic wall. Local extension can be appreciated by clinical examination which determines the clinical staging of cervical cancer. It does not take sufficiently into account the volume of the tumour which is a principal factor in lymphatic dissemination. Nodal metastases essentially localise in the external iliac chain (obturateur group), from there spreading to the common iliac or latero aortic nodes which may, under exceptionnal circumstances be involved primarily. The incidence of latero-aortic metastases has recently been high-lighted by pre-treatment staging laparotomy. Besides lymphatic metastases, systematic metastases via a venous spread are rare. They indicate a late diagnosis or therapy failure with pelvic relapse. The therapeutic effort in cancer of the uterine cervix, at the present time, ought to be found on loco-regional treatment using either radiotherapy or surgery.

Treatment of carcinomatous degeneration in patients with chronic osteomyelitis requires differentiation between benign, penetrating epithelioma and invading, low-grade squamous-cell carcinoma. Although most lesions are low grade, analysis of the case histories of twenty-three patients treated at the Mayo Clinic indicates that these tumors do metastasize. When malignant-appearing epithelium invading bone is identified, ablative surgery is indicated. Inadequate surgical treatment resulted in the deaths of two patients in our series. Routine regional lymphadenectomy at the time of amputation seems unnecessary. Regional lymphadenopathy persisting for six to twelve weeks after amputation warrants surgical intervention. With prompt, aggressive surgical treatment, the prognosis for patients with squamous-cell carcinoma in an osteomyelitic cavity is good.

Report of a series of 26 cases of cylindrical epithelioma of the nasal cavities and accessory nasal sinuses. These neoplasms constitute a remarkably homogenous group the main characteristics of which are following: -- uniform histological pattern, similar to that of the epitheliomas of the colon, -- ethmoidal location in almost all cases, -- preferential occurrence in wood-workers, for instance in the Bas-Rhin. The prognosis depends on the extension of the epithelioma verified in 16 patients during the intervention. Recurrences caused death in 13 patients of this series. Ganglionic or distant metastases are rare. Six patients, i.e. 24 p. 100 had a favourable evolution of at least 3 years. Discussion about the therapeutics of the primary tumor and of its recurrences.

ICRF 159 and Triton WR 1339 have been examined for their ability to suppress subcutaneous growth and pulmonary metastases from a transplanted rat epithelioma. Neither compound influenced subcutaneous tumour development or reduced the propensity to metastasize when administered in regimens reported to suppress pulmonary, lymph node or intracerebral metastases in other experimental system.

By labelling dermal infiltrate cells with H3-thymidine, two types of skin tumours can be distinguished: one type with many labelled cells in the infiltrate (H3-thymidine labelling index, H3-I), the other with few labelled cells. Type I includes malignant melanoma (H3-I = 2.2%) and hemangioendothelioma (2.8%). Type II includes metastases of malignant melanoma (1%), squamous cell carcinoma (1.1%), basel cell epithelioma (0.5%), nevus cell nevus (0.6%), and nevoid lentigo (0.4). The number of labelled cells in the cellular reaction of Type II tumours does not differ significantly from that in normal human corium (0.75%), though there may be a dense cellular reaction. DNA-synthesizing cells were classified with the aid of characteristical stainings and histochemical methods. A vast majority of them were found to be lymphocytes. Our research underlines the special importance of cellular inflammatory reaction, i.e. cellular immunity, im malignant melanoma and probably in hemangioendothelioma.

Levamisole has been examined for its ability to control local growth and pulmonary metastases of transplanted rat tumours. The compound did not suppress subcutaneous growth of 3-methylcholanthrene induced sarcomata when administered systemically in a variety of regimens, or when injected in admixture with tumour cells. In addition, levamisole treatment failed to suppress pulmonary growth of intravenously transferred sarcoma cells or spontaneous pulmonary metastases appearing after surgical removal of a transplanted epithelioma.

The postoperative outcome of bronchiolo-alveolar epithelioma (EBA) is unpredictable. We question whether a study of the anatomo-pathological structures would enable us to detect prognostic indicators. The clinical characteristics, histopathology and outcome of 52 cases of EBA were studied. 31 tumours were detected in a systematic fashion; 50 patients had excision of the tumour and in 39 cases there was no invasion of the lymphatics. 10 were of the multicentric variety and 42 were of the nodular variety and 9 of these were the centre of an inflammatory lympho-plasmocytic reaction. 20 cases revealed mucinous differentiation and 32 were non-mucinous. In the latter cases nucleo-cytoplasmic anomalies were only slightly increased or even absent. Blood vessel invasion was present in 12 cases and metastases to the air spaces in 20. The overall survival was 83% in the first year, 65% in the second year, 42% at five years and 26.5% at 10 years. The nodular lesions were compatible with a significantly better survival than the diffuse forms. Other characteristics such as whether the tumour was mucinous or not, inflammatory, showed nuclear anomalies, blood vessel invasion and airborne metastases did not seem to affect survival.

The authors report two cases of medullo-epithelioma of ciliary body found in two young children. They describe the main clinical symptoms which are often non specific (cataract, glaucoma). Diagnosis is based on histological findings following enucleation: the tumor is developed from the ciliary body cells and has often a local malignancy. Metastasis are rare.
