Metastatic breast carcinoma to the ovary is sometimes difficult to differentiate from primary ovarian carcinoma. This problem is often encountered in breast carcinoma patients who develop adnexal masses. ER and PR can be positive in a high percentage of breast and ovarian carcinomas, and therefore cannot be used in the differential diagnosis of these entities. WT1 and CA125 have been identified as possible markers for ovarian cancer. However, no studies have been done that specifically compare the immunophenotype of breast carcinoma metastatic to ovary with that of primary ovarian cancer. Thirty-nine cases of metastatic breast carcinoma to the ovary, 36 primary breast carcinomas, and 42 primary ovarian carcinomas were examined immunohistochemically for the expression of WT1, CA125, carcinoembryonic antigen,
MUC2
, MUC1, and GCDFP. The percentage of cells stained and the intensity of staining were recorded. Thirty-two ovarian carcinomas (76%) were positive for WT1, including 31 of 33 (94%) serous carcinomas. Most of them had strong and diffuse staining. None of the breast cancers either primary or metastatic to the ovary expressed WT1. Thirty-eight (90%) ovarian carcinomas were positive for CA125, most of them with strong and diffuse staining. Most breast carcinomas were negative for CA125, with only 6 (16%) of the primary ones and 5 (12%) of the metastatic showing weak and focal positivity. All ovarian carcinomas were negative for GCDFP. Five primary breast cancers (14%) and 17 (43%) metastatic to the ovary were positive for GCDFP. Nine (21%) ovarian carcinomas, 8 (22%) primary breast carcinomas, and 13 (33%) metastatic to the ovary were positive for carcinoembryonic antigen. Almost all tumors examined were positive for MUC1 (100% ovarian carcinomas, 100% primary breast carcinomas, and 95% metastatic breast carcinomas to ovary).

was positive in 10 (24%) ovarian carcinomas, 3 (8%) primary breast cancers, and 12 (30%)
metastases
to the ovary. The presence of immunoreactivity for WT1 and CA125 in a carcinoma involving ovary strongly favors a primary lesion. Most ovarian carcinomas are positive for both markers, whereas the majority of metastatic breast carcinomas to the ovary are negative. GCDFP can be complementary in this differential diagnosis.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a clinical condition initially thought to be related to ovarian mucinous tumors; however, immunohistochemistry and molecular biology techniques have convincingly made the link to appendiceal mucinous neoplasms, resulting in changes in histologic and clinical approaches. The objective of this study was to compare the immunohistochemical profile of ovarian tumors associated with PMP and intestinal mucinous ovarian neoplasms without PMP. The study was retrospective and included 28 intestinal ovarian mucinous tumors selected from the files of the Division of Surgical Pathology of the University of Sao Paulo Medical School, from 1996 to 2005. Seven cases were associated with PMP of disseminated peritoneal adenomucinosis-type and all presented borderline histology. Immunohistochemical staining for mucin genes products (MUC1,

Prognostic factors for ampullary carcinomas (ACs) are poorly defined. Fifty three resected ACs were analyzed for CDX2, MUC1, MUC5AC, MUC6,

, and for mismatch repair proteins (hMLH1, hMSH2, PMS2, hMSH6) using immunohistochemistry. Microsatellite instability (MSI) status was evaluated by fluorescently labeled PCR using an automated sequencer. Univariate and multivariate analysis was performed for clinicopathological, immunohistochemical and molecular parameters. CDX2 was found in 32 out of 53 (60%) ACs with a significantly higher frequency among intestinal ACs compared with biliopancreatic (BP) ACs. The MUC1, MUC5AC, MUC6,

Five human tumors and corresponding orthotopic animal models of human pseudomyxoma peritonei and peritoneal mucinous carcinomatosis from colorectal carcinoma were extensively characterized by immunohistochemical analysis of molecular markers of tissue differentiation (carcinoembryonal antigen, CK20, CK7, and vimentin), proliferation and metastasis (Ki-67, vascular endothelial growth factor, and S100A4), mucins (MUC1,
MUC2
, MUC4, MUC5AC), and adhesion molecules (E-cadherin, N-cadherin, P-cadherin, claudin 1, claudin 3, and claudin 4). Macro- and microscopic growth patterns of implanted human tissues were preserved through passages in the animals, as were with few exception immunohistochemical staining profiles, supporting the relevance of the models as tools for studying the human disease. Tissue differentiation marker expression was in accordance with previously published results and high Ki-67 score confirmed high proliferative capacity, whereas absence of metastatic capacity was supported by low expression levels of the studied metastasis markers. and MUC4, whereas MUC1 was not expressed and MUC5AC expression was variable. Similarly, specific adhesion molecules from the cadherin and claudin families were shown to be of relevance in the investigated samples. The results indicate that mucinous peritoneal surface malignancies of intestinal origin are characterized by the presence of specific molecular markers and represent a step toward understanding the complexity of this intriguing phenotypic entity.

Micropapillary carcinoma (MPC) of the stomach is a rare, newly recognized entity, and only 2 patients with this histology have been reported. We investigated clinicopathologic features, expression of mucin (
MUC2
, MUC5AC, MUC6, CD10) and cytokeratin profiles (CK7 and CK20), epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR and HER2), prognostic markers (p53 and Ki-67), and outcomes in 11 MPCs of the stomach. The proportion of MPC component ranged from 5% to 70%. Micropapillary features were often found at the deep advancing edge of the tumor. Endolymphatic tumor emboli were found in 10 cases (91%) and lymph node
