Lymphangioma cavernosum of the kidney is a benign tumor. Metastasis has not been found in any of the 20 cases reported to date. The sex ratio of patients is 1.5 to 1, favoring female subjects. Average patient age is 33.7 years. Treatment has consisted of nephrectomy in 18 patients, since the possibility of a malignant tumor could not be eliminated preoperatively.

Juvenile aponeurotic fibroma is a rare lesion of the palmar surface of the hands and, occasionally, of the feet of children. It is benign tumor which is self-limited in growth, but which has a strong propensity to recur. Grossly and histologically it exhibits a tendency to invade all surrounding structures, but does not metastasize. Rapidity of growth seems to slow down with increasing age. It should be recognized and treated conservatively by repeated surgical removal.

Five patients with cystadenoma of the pancreas were seen during a period of 22 years at this institute. This rare benign tumor occurred predominantly in middle age women, with the presenting symptoms of pain and an epigastric mass, but without a history suggestive of pancreatitis or abdominal trauma. Selective celiac and superior mesenteric antiography is helpful in establishing the diagnosis. If this cystic tumor is not recognized and adequately treated, the surgeon may miss the opportunity for cure. Cystadenoma should be suspected when a cystic mass arising from the body or tail of the pancreas is encountered without evidence of metastases. Although surgical extirpation is the preferable treatment, undue risks should not be undertaken because of the slow growth rate of this benign tumor. Due to the known association of this tumor with other malignant lesions, diabetes mellitus as well as multicystic tumors of the liver and kidneys, these patients should be thoroughtly investigated.

A cytogenetic study of an eccrine spiradenoma and two lymph node metastases, with a growth pattern and microscopic appearance typical for benign eccrine spiradenoma, revealed a 46,XY-5,del(16)(q22),+mar(t(?;5)(?::5q13----5qter)) karyotype. The finding of the same abnormal karyotype in the tumor and the metastases suggests a relationship between the chromosomal abnormalities and the clinical malignant behavior of this morphologic benign tumor.

Partial mandibulectomy was performed for the treatment of benign or malignant oral tumors in 142 dogs. Forty-two dogs with a benign tumor (ameloblastoma) had a 22.5 month (range, 6 to 74 months) median disease-free interval, with a 97% 1-year survival rate; there was local recurrence in one dog. Twenty-four dogs with squamous cell carcinoma had a disease-free interval of 26 months (range, 6 to 84 months), with a 91% 1-year survival rate; recurrence and metastasis developed in two dogs and metastatic disease in one dog. Based on survival curves, 37 dogs with a melanoma had a median survival time of 9.9 months (range, 1 to 36 months), with a 21% 1-year survival rate; 20 dogs died or were euthanatized for recurrent or metastatic disease. Twenty dogs with osteosarcoma had a median survival time of 13.6 months (range, 3 to 28 months), with a 35% 1-year survival rate; nine dogs died or were euthanatized for recurrent or metastatic disease. Nineteen dogs with fibrosarcoma had median survival time of 10.6 months (range, 3 to 32 months), with a 50% 1-year survival rate; 12 dogs died or were euthanatized for recurrent or metastatic disease. Results of this and previous studies demonstrated that partial mandibulectomy was effective in prolonging survival and decreasing recurrence for squamous cell carcinoma and ameloblastoma. Progressive disease and corresponding low survival times were common in dogs with melanoma, osteosarcoma, and fibrosarcoma. There were no differences in survival times or the progression of disease among five partial hemimandibulectomy procedures. The high rates of recurrence and metastasis in dogs with these tumors suggest a need for evaluation of ancillary chemotherapy and local radiation therapy to decrease the prevalence of progressive disease.

A 70-year-old woman with leiomyosarcoma, followed up for 5 years as tuberculoma, is described. The tumor, in the left lower lobe, had enlarged from 1.5 x 1.5 cm to 3.4 x 3.4 cm in 5 years, and doubling time was calculated to be 540 days. Another tumor (1.8 x 1.8 cm) was also recognized in the right lower lobe at the later time. Since not only a benign tumor but metastatic disease was suspected, thoracotomy was performed, and the intraoperative pathologic diagnosis was leiomyosarcoma. However, only partial lung resection was performed because of the low growth rate of the tumor, the patient's advanced age, limited lymphatic metastasis and favorable prognosis with only partial resection. DNA analysis of the tumor based on flow cytometry showed a diploid pattern, and this was thought to account for the long doubling time of the tumor. The postoperative course was satisfactory without any signs of recurrence at the operation site.

Surgically resected fresh human tumors (16 malignant and 1 benign) in the head and neck regions were s.c. transplanted into scid mice. All malignant tumors (12 squamous cell carcinomas, 2 papillary adenocarcinomas and 1 adenoid cystic carcinoma) except one heavily irradiated squamous cell carcinoma could grow in scid mice. However, all of three squamous cell carcinomas of the maxillary sinus grew only in 50% of scid mice, and two of them failed to grow in the second transfer. The remainder were successfully transplantable for further generations, except one accidental case. A benign tumor, a follicular adenoma of the thyroid gland, was also accepted in scid mice and was transplantable for further generations, though its growth was very slow. Distant metastases were found in the lung only when poorly differentiated carcinomas were transplanted into scid mice, but did not occur until 90 days after the transplantation of well and moderately differentiated carcinomas. The histological characteristics of both malignant and benign tumors were retained well in all of the xenografts and metastatic lesions. Thus, scid mice seem useful to investigate not only the properties of benign and malignant human tumors but also the metastatic spread of tumors which threaten the life of cancer patients.

Infiltrating syringomatous adenoma of the nipple is a distinct, benign clinical entity. It is similar histologically to a syringoma, a benign tumor originating in the ducts of the dermal sweat glands. When located in the nipple, this lesion has been mistaken for nipple duct adenoma or tubular carcinoma. Infiltrating syringomatous adenoma of the nipple is locally infiltrating but does not metastasize. Appropriate local management depends on an accurate diagnosis. Following is a case report, review of the literature, and therapeutic options for infiltrating syringomatous adenoma of the nipple.

We report a retrospective study on the clinicopathologic features and flow cytometric DNA analysis of ten renal oncocytomas compared with a control group of ten randomly selected renal cell carcinomas. Among the oncocytoma patients, no recurrences or metastases were noted over an average follow-up of 6.7 years (range = 6 months to 16 years). Reproducible, high-quality DNA histograms were obtained on the paraffin-embedded specimens by using our modified flow cytometric procedure. One aneuploid (10%) and two hyperdiploid tumors (20%) were found in the oncocytoma group. There was no correlation between these abnormal DNA histographic patterns and survival or tumor stages. On the contrary, a good correlation was found between tumor grades and DNA ploidy in the controls. We conclude that renal oncocytoma is a clinically benign tumor, yet it may exhibit varying degrees of flow cytometric DNA abnormalities, which have no predictive value on survival and probably reflect the characteristics of oncocytes rather than its malignant potential.

Ameloblastoma of the jaw is an aggressive benign tumor of epithelial origin that has generally been treated surgically even for metastases. This article is a review of the literature and a report of a previously unpublished case. Despite earlier reports, it is suggested that the available data clearly indicate that it is a radiosensitive tumor. In this report, specific recommendations for radiation therapy are outlined, and guidelines for treatment planning, radiation dosage, and fractionation expected outcome and follow-up are given.
