30 female Wistar rats weighing between 70 and 90 g were fed for 8 months with 0,188% N-[4-(5-nitro-2-furyl)-2-thiazolyl] Formamide (FANFT). After this period a papillary tumor of the urinary bladder was demonstrable in each animal. Histological examination always revealed a transitional cell carcinoma with prevailing medium tumor stages; no distant
metastases
were found. The grade of malignancy was classified as medium and high. No significant statistical relationship could be ascertained between tumor stage and grade or between grade and weight, but a correlation was established between tumor stage and weight. After 12 months, 36/60 kidneys were found to be normal, whereas in 20/60 dysplasias and in 2/60 transitional cell carcinomas of the renal pelvis were observed; secondary
hydronephrosis
due to bladder tumors occured 4 times. Other organ changes were not noticeable.

Sixteen patients with abdominal neuroblastoma had 99m Technetium Phosphate Compounds (99m TC-PC) bone scans as a preoperative evaluation for
metastatic disease
. Ten patients (62%) had extraosseous tumor uptake while six patients (38%) did not. There was no difference in the incidence of tumor calcification, tumor necrosis or
hydronephrosis
in the two groups. However, VMA levels were significantly higher in the group with extraosseous tumor uptake. Various bone seeking radionuclides are compared to 99m TC-PC and possible mechanism for extraosseous uptake of such radionuclides are postulated. Awareness of the frequency of such uptake should reduce the possibility of errors in the interpretation of bone scans in patients with neuroblastoma.

Patients after operative and/or radiological therapy for cervical cancer should have gynecological follow-up examinations every two months in the first year. In cases of urological complications after irradiation therapy, radionephrography, infusion urogram, blood count, cystoscopy, and cystometry should also be carried out after two months. Depending on the clinical picture, radionephrography, blood count and urinalysis are to be repeated in regular intervals. After lymphography with positive findings, x-ray controls are necessary after two and four months. In cases of increasing
hydronephrosis
and hydroureter due to fibrostenosis of the ureter plastic surgery is recommended. Most urological complications are to be expected after radical operation and postoperative irradiation. In patients with endometrial uterine cancer,
metastases
mostly occur paraurethrally and in the lungs. Chest x-ray is to be taken every six months. Suspicious paraurethral hardening is cytologically diagnosed by needle biopsy. In ovarian carcinoma stage III and IV repeated x-ray controls of the lungs during longterm polychemotherapy are advisable. Prior to second look operations after combined treatment a second look laparoscopy is particularly important. Urological complications are more frequent after therapy of cervical cancer while ovarian carcinoma is more likely to develop complications of the small bowel.

Grey-scale ultrasound defines smaller renal lesions that had previously been appreciated and is able to define associated lesions of the liver such as
metastases
and cysts. The appropriate technique to delineate the normal anatomy of the kidney is described. Ultrasound plays a central role in the identification and characterization of renal mass lesions thus leading to appropriate further work up. In renal transplant evaluation ultrasound is useful as a complementary modality to other imaging studies permitting the recognition of pelvic fluid collections, rejection, and
hydronephrosis
. Specific findings are present in renal abscess, perirenal abscess, and in several of the renal cystic diseases. Adrenal lesions can be identified and clarified. In the lower urinary tract, ultrasound can identify bladder and prostatic tumors.Ultrasound provides a rapid, safe and non-invasive modality which is complementary to other imaging techniques in the diagnosis of urinary tract disease.

An uncommon manifestation of breast cancer is ureteral obstruction secondary to
metastatic disease
. Five patients who recently developed this complication from two to 20 years after the diagnosis of breast cancer are described. Only two of the five patients had urinary symptoms. All of the patients were older, postmenopausal females who had bone metastases and all had responded to previous hormonal manipulation. Bone scanning was useful in detecting unsuspected
hydronephrosis
in two patients. Retroperitoneal disease appears to be a complication of long standing breast cancer which is usually hormonally dependent. Routine examination of the bone scan for renal asymmetry may aid in the diagnosis, especially in asymptomatic patients.

The latest generation of Scurasil (dimethylpolisoxane) ureteral prosthesis was used in six dogs as a model for internal urinary diversion in patients with
metastatic disease
. It was found to cause minimal reaction but carried a high complication rate, including stone formation, end-stage pyelonephritis, and
hydronephrosis
. Although technically easy to use, modifications in design are necessary prior to use in humans.

In 76 patients with space occupying lesions of the kidneys CT scans were performed. Size, shape and localisation of the kidneys could well be demonstrated by this method. Space occupying lesions were clearly seen, and solid tumors could be differentiated from cysts. However differential diagnosis between either primary renal cell carcinoma and
metastases
or between malignant and benign mass lesions was not possible. There was no problem in the diagnosis of
hydronephrosis
where as a differentiation between inflammatory changes and solid masses proved to be difficult. CT scanning seems to be usefull in the diagnosis of renal space occupying lesions. As a non invavise method it should be performed previous to renal angiography, which thereby becomes unnecessary in many cases.

24 cases are described in which retroperitoneal processes were operated on for primarily gynecologic reasons in women of at least 60 years of age. They include 6 sarcomas, 3 neurinomas, 1 cyst, 1 fibroma, 1 lipoma, 1 congenital sacciform kidney, 1
hydronephrosis
, 3 pancreatic carcinomas, 2 renal carcinomas, 1 ureteral cyst and 4
metastases
of various malignomas. These cases were gathered in 18 West Berlin Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology during a 10-year period. The post-operative mortality rate was 37.5% (9 deaths); this is probably due to the relatively low incidence of symptoms and signs associated with retroperitoneal diseases and their anatomical localization. Finally, new procedures for the diagnosis of retroperitoneal tumors are indicated.

Computed tomography (CT) after abdominoperineal (AP) resection for rectal carcinoma is a routine procedure for the detection of recurrent tumor and distal
metastases
. We reviewed sequential CT scans after AP resection in 52 patients in order to see whether the urinary tract as a neighboring organ is involved in recurrent malignancy. Bladder displacement in itself was not associated with
hydronephrosis
. Such
hydronephrosis
developed, however, in 14 patients--13 with a presacral mass, and one with retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy. In 23 of the 52 patients a presacral mass appeared, either fibrosis, infection, or recurrence. Severe hydronephrosis was found only with malignancy. We suggest that marked
hydronephrosis
associated with a presacral mass after AP resection is an indirect sign of malignancy.

A rare case of squamous cell carcinoma of the right kidney associated with giant
hydronephrosis
and right ureteral stone was reported. A 60-year-old woman was referred to our department with a complaint of ileocecal dull pain. A plain computerized tomogram (CT) revealed giant
hydronephrosis
, and a kidney-ureter-bladder X-ray revealed a right lower ureteral stone. A right percutaneous nephrostomy was done and antegrade pyelography revealed giant
hydronephrosis
and a ureteral stone, but showed no intrapelvic filling defect. Under the diagnosis of right ureteral stone with
hydronephrosis
, right ureterolithotomy was done. However, since the inflammation did not subside after ureterolithotomy, right nephrectomy was done. The surgically removed right kidney did not show any evident tumor mass, a histological study revealed squamous cell carcinoma involving renal parenchyma. The patient received no adjuvant therapy and died 3 months after nephrectomy with sudden appearance of bone, liver and pulmonary
metastases
. The preoperative efficacy of imaging modalities for renal squamous cell carcinoma was discussed herein.
