Under study were kinetic regularities in development and incorporation of tritium labelled thymidine into cells of two experimental metastasizing tumors -- Zajdela ascites hepatoma and Walker
carcinosarcoma
, transplanted intratesticulary. Primary tumors and their
metastases
in regional lymph nodes show certain differences relative both to the rate of the process and intensity of the DNA synthesis, and relative number of cells with incorporated labelled thymidine.

Our investigation of 20 cases of C. ph. of the breast in women aged between 12 and 70 years yielded the following results: 1. In all cases a fibroadenoma or remnants of such a tumor were seen alongside with C. ph. A C. ph. therefore always develops on the base of a benign fibroadenoma of the breast. 2. The mitotic proliferation of the epithelium induces a proliferation of the myoepithelial cells which form the stromal portion of the tumor and can differentiate in to fibroblasts, lipoblasts, smooth muscle cells, reticulum cells, cartilage cells, osteoid cells or bone cells. The C. ph. of the female breast should thus be seen as an adenomyothelioma. Malignant degeneration of stromal cells possibly with haematogenous metastasis is observed in some cases. Concurrent malignant change of the epithelium (
carcinosarcoma
) is extremely rare and leads to lymph node
metastases
. 3. At the time being, there is no standardized and/or schematic treatment available. The therapy should be performed according to the size and growth of the tumor into the surrounding tissue, from simple excision to mastectomy. Radiation therapy ist not effective.

A mixed malignant tumour of the lung intermediate in type between pulmonary blastoma and
carcinosarcoma
is described. The epithelial component consisted of squamous carcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, and clefts lined by bland epithelial cells. The supporting stroma was composed of pleomorphic sarcoma, fibrosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, osteosarcoma, and indeterminate mesenchymal tissue. The tumour was removed surgically, but the patient died postoperatively with rapidly developing multiple bony and soft tissue
metastases
. Subcutaneous
metastases
showed the appearnce of poorly differentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. Published reports of mixed malignant lung tumours are reviewed.

Sarcoma 45 cells were inoculated subcutaneously to rats and
carcinosarcoma
. Walker 256 cells implanted intramuscularly in the Wistar rats. The injections of the heparin-urea complex with a simultaneous blocking of the vegetative nerves system created an anticoagulant and fibrinolytic background in the organism of these animals and produced an antitumorigenic effect, i.e. the inhibition of growth of primary tumors and
metastases
, the mitotic activity decline in the malignant tissue and a change in the submicroscopic structure of the sarcoma 45 cells (greater chromatin density, prevalence of the fibrillar component in the nuclei, swelling of the reticulum channels, condensation of mitochondria and reduction of polysomes). All this shows the physiological activity of malignant cells to decline through imitating the hyperfunction of the anticoagulation blood system.

Walker's 256
carcinosarcoma
a transplantable tumor of the rate changes its behaviour as a consequence of various factors. In this paper we compare the evolution of 2 lines of the tumor: WM 16 (muscular) and Christ Hospital (ascitic) both inoculated intramuscularly. Animals receiving line WM 16 had a severe rapidly progressive evolution dying around day 14 after inoculation with diffuse
metastases
to lymph nodes (65% of animals), kidneys (53%), spleen (50%), lungs (46.5%), liver (45%), bone marrow (44.8%), in 56% of the animals there were circulating tumoral cells. Animals receiving Christ Hospital line survived up to 40 days,
metastases
were limited do lungs (48.7%) and lymph nodes (31.7%) and only in 2 of 45 animals circulating tumoral cells were observed.

Trauma produced by amputation of a limb bearing the primary tumor influenced pulmonary
metastases
of the
Carcinosarcoma
of Walker 256 of the rat. This enhancement was present in 38% of the animals following the removal of a limb bearing the primary tumor; and in 29% of those in which the controlateral limb without tumor was amputated. A significant prolongation of the clotting time, an elevation of fibrinogen factor II and VII and a rapid consumption of factor VIII present soon after trauma may have been the parameter responsible for the increase of pulmonary
metastases
seen in this study.

A polypoid lesion of the esophagus with all the morphological features of a so-called pseudosarcoma produced nodal
metastases
of the spindle cell element. Ultrastructurally, these spindle cells showed only fibroblastic features. The findings in this case and a review of cases reported as pseudosarcoma of the esophagus lend little support for the contention that they differ from cases categorized as
carcinosarcoma
of the esophagus.

The differential distribution of a series of antineoplastic agents in metastatic tissues compared to their respective primary tumors has been investigated in one rat and two mouse experimental tumor systems, ie, the intramuscular Lewis lung carcinoma (3LL) of C57BL/6 mice, which gives rise to spontaneous lung metastases, the intratibial Sarcoma 180 (S180) of CD1 mice, which induces macroscopic
metastases
to the lymph nodes, and the Walker 256
carcinosarcoma
of CD rats, which also metastasizes to the lymph nodes. The results described in this paper show that the concentrations of adriamycin, daunorubicin, cyclophosphamide and its alkylating metabolites, hydroxyurea, 1-methyl-1-nitrosourea, and 6-mercaptopurine are much higher in the pulmonary
metastases
of 3LL and/or in the lymph node
metastases
of S180 than the concentrations measured in the primary tumor. In the Walker 256 tumor system the distribution of adriamycin appears to follow the same pattern observed for the mouse tumors. Only for methotrexate (in the 3LL tumor) is the difference in the concentrations at the two sites not so evident. These findings are discussed in relation to the comparatively greater sensitivity of
metastases
to chemotherapy.

Polypoid carcinomas with spindle-cell sarcomatous features have been designated either as
carcinosarcoma
or pseudosarcoma. The distinction between these two tumors has depended on the presence of "intermingling" of the carcinomatous and sarcomatous components in so-called
carcinosarcoma
. But unlike the
carcinosarcoma
, the sarcomatous component in pseudosarcoma has been considered benign. A polypoid tumor of the esophagus in a 57-year-old male was predominantly composed of spindle cell, sarcomatous cells. The presence of adjacent intraepithelial epidermoid carcinoma with transitional and ultrastructural features confirmed the epithelial origin of this tumor. Because of the absence of "intermingling," the primary tumor was considered to be a pseudosarcoma. However, our postmortem examination showed
metastases
composed of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous features. A review of the literature on carcinosarcomas and pseudosarcomas shows that only one case of pseudosarcoma reported by Hughes and Cruickshank showed a similar situation and indicates that the sarcomatous component in pseudosarcomas has the same metastatic potentiality as has been reported in carcinosarcomas. We conclude from these studies a basic similarity of the
carcinosarcoma
and pseudosarcoma. The term polypoid carcinoma is proposed for both these lesions.

Pulmonary blastoma is a rare tumor of the lung. Although it has been stated that this is predominantly a tumor of adults, a review of the 42 cases published to date reveals that it is a disease which occurs with some frequency in children. The tumor is relatively benign compared to pulmonary
carcinosarcoma
. Of the eight cases previously described in children, three are known to have survived and to be free of disease 10 months, 3 and 8 years after surgical resection. We report two additional cases of pulmonary blastoma in children followed for 34 and 26 months without any evidence of recurrence or
metastases
.
