Marijuana is one of the most popular drugs legally admitted for general sale in many countries. To consider it safe and unlikely to develop drug dependence is abusive. The use of marijuana as a herbal medication is being widely discussed in literature. The most promising effect of delta-9-etrahydrocannabinol seems to be observed in the case of
nausea
, following cancer chemotherapy. Despite its positive action on the human organism, marijuana smoking has been shown to exert adverse effects on the cardiovascular system causing well-tolerated tachycardia and/or hypotension. We also observed that
marijuana abuse
was associated with an increased risk of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The report presents a case of young healthy white subject suffering from paroxysmal atrial fibrillation following marijuana intoxication. The abuse of this substance was the most possible and identifiable risk factor for observed paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Cannabinoid hyperemesis is a syndrome characterized by severe
nausea
and hyperemesis associated with chronic
marijuana abuse
and marked by compulsive bathing habits, which temporarily alleviate symptoms. We describe the syndrome in 4 adult patients for whom extensive gastrointestinal evaluations failed to identify another clear cause. Cessation of marijuana use resulted in the alleviation of their symptoms. Because recreational and medical use of marijuana is increasing in the United States, this condition should be considered in many patients who present with cyclical vomiting.

Cannabinoid hyperemesis has recently been described in the literature. It is a syndrome characterized by severe
nausea
and hyperemesis in the setting of chronic
marijuana abuse
and, to date, has been described only in adults. We describe the syndrome in 2 pediatric patients, for whom extensive gastrointestinal workups failed to identify a clear cause and cessation of marijuana use resulted in the alleviation of their symptoms. As in most published adult cases, compulsive bathing was present in both of these cases.

Legalization of marijuana use will increase the number of people who will become long-term users. A prior medical record review study in Australia, in 2004, identified 19 chronic marijuana users who entered the emergency department with recurrent vomiting associated with abdominal pain. Routine treatment of the nausea and vomiting, associated with the chronic
marijuana abuse
, with antiemetics is ineffective in patients with cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. Narcotics do not relieve the abdominal pain but may cause worsening rebound pain. The best treatment of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome was found to be abstinence from the recreational use of marijuana. It is important for advanced practice nurses to place cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome in their differentials of patients presenting to the emergency department with recurrent
nausea
, vomiting, and abdominal pain. They need to be knowledgeable about cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome to provide the proper management of care for this specific medical condition.
