Recently, it has been known that the aminosidine has marked anthelmintic efficacy against
tapeworm
. In this investigation, aminosidine was used for treating 14 cases with Ciphyllobothrium latum infection and 5 cases with Taenia saginata infection. Aminosidine was administered orally in a single dose of 50 mg/kg, followed by a purge after the treatment. Fourteen patients with D. latum infection and 5 patients with T. saginata infection expelled long strobila in all cases. Although only 7 scolices of 18 worms of D. latum were found in the stool and no scolex of T. saginata was found, follow-up examination for a long period showed no evidence of remaining infection with one exception of D. latum. , vomiting and abdominal pain were observed in only one of 19 cases given aminosidine. But in the other 18 cases, no side effects were encountered. It was concluded that aminosidine is safe, effective therapeutic agent for the treatment of
cestodiasis
in man.

or hepatic and biliary symptoms. Intestinal helminthism is spread all over the world. Some of these diseases are limited to warm regions, but they are more and more often seen in our gastroenterological outpatient departments. Nematodes are found most frequently, with a predominance of Ascaris, Trichuris, and Enterobius. But Ancylostoma and Strongyloides are not seldom, too. Concerning Cestodes, Taenia and Vampirolepis are predominant. Trematodes = Fasciola, Echinostoma, Schistosoma are less frequent. Larva migrans, Acanthocephala and Dipylidium sometimes cause considerable diagnostive problems. Classification of macroscopic and microscopic findings is decisive for the therapeutic strategy. For nematodiasis Mebendazole (Vermox, Surfont), Pyrantelembonate (Helmex), Pyrviniumembonate (Molevac, Pyrcon) are effective. Albendazole (Eskazole) is approved for strongyloidiasis. For
cestodiasis
Niclosamid (Yomesan) and Praziquantel (Cesol) are suited. Higher doses of Praziquantel (Biltricide) are recommended for trematodiasis. During pregnancy and lactation period absorbable anthelmintics have to be avoided.

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infestation caused by a
tapeworm
of the genus Echinococcus, and it is common in Mediterranean regions. Cystic lesions cause symptoms via compressing adjacent organs or may be totally silent. Morbidity is usually secondary to free rupture of the echinococcal cyst with or without anaphylaxis, infection of the cyst or dysfunction of affected organs. The cyst of Echinococcus granulosus is commonly located in the liver and frequently causes no symptoms. Anaphylactic reactions as a result of cyst perforation generally occur during interventions such as needle aspiration or open surgery; however, the spillage of cyst fluid with intravascular spread resulting from trauma may also trigger anaphylaxis, and rare case reports of this kind are present in the literature. We report the case of a 17-year-old man who was admitted to the public hospital with a sudden onset of
nausea
, vomiting and fainting. After a short period of intervention in the emergency department he died. As the cause of his sudden death was unknown, a forensic autopsy was carried out by the Forensic Council of Turkey. The autopsy revealed a macroscopically non-ruptured hydatid cyst in the liver and laryngeal oedema. In histopathological examination, two scolices in the pulmonary artery and inflammatory infiltration mainly composed of mast cells in the larynx were detected. Sudden death in this case was attributed to anaphylactic shock caused by intravascular spread of the cyst contents.

Taenia saginata infects human beings with symptoms ranging from
nausea
, abdominal discomfort to digestive disturbances and intestinal blockage. In the present study, microRNA (miRNA) expressing profile in adult T. saginata was analyzed using Solexa deep sequencing and bioinformatics analysis. A total of 15.8 million reads was obtained by Solexa sequencing, and 13.3 million clean reads (1.73 million unique sequences) was obtained after removing reads smaller than 18 nt. Ten conserved miRNAs corresponding to 607,382 reads were found when matching the reads against known miRNAs of Schistosoma japonicum in miRBase database. The miR-71 had the most abundant expression in T. saginata, followed by miR-219-5p, but some other common miRNAs such as let-7, miR-40, and miR-103 were not identified in T. saginata. Nucleotide bias analysis found that the known miRNAs showed high bias and the uracil was the dominant nucleotide, particularly at the first and 11th positions which were almost at the beginning and middle of conserved miRNAs. One novel miRNA (Tsa-miR-001) corresponding to ten precursors was identified and confirmed by stem-loop RT-PCR. To our knowledge, this is the first report of miRNA profiles in T. saginata, which will contribute to better understanding of the complex biology of this zoonotic trematode. The reported data of T. saginata miRNAs should provide valuable references for miRNA studies of closed related zoonotic Taenia cestodes such as Taenia solium and Taenia asiatica.

Taeniasis refers to the infection with adult tapeworms of Taenia spp. in the upper small intestine of humans, which is also a cause of cysticercosis infection in either both humans and/or animals. Currently the most commonly applied anthelminthics for treatment of taeniasis are praziquantel and niclosamide. Praziquantel is very effective, but has the risk of induction of epileptic seizures or convulsions in carriers with asymptomatic concurrent neurocysticercosis. In contrast, niclosamide is safe and effective, but is not readily available in many endemic countries including China. In the current community-based study, we assessed the curative effect of either pumpkin seeds or areca nut extract alone in taeniasis, and also looked at synergistic effects of these two herb drugs on tapeworms. In the study group with the pumpkin seed/areca nut extract treatment, 91 (79.1%) of 115 suspected taeniasis cases (with a history of expulsion of proglottids within the previous one year) released whole tapeworms, four (3.5%) expelled incomplete strobila, and no tapeworms or proglottids were recovered in the remaining 20 cases. In these 115 persons, 45 were confirmed as taeniasis before treatment by microscopy and/or coproPCR. Forty (88.9%) of 45 confirmed cases eliminated intact worms following treatment. The mean time period for complete elimination of tapeworms in 91 taeniasis cases was 2 h (range 20 min to 8 h 30 min), and 89.0% (81) of 91 patients discharged intact worms within 3h after drug administration. In Control Group A with treatment of pumpkin seeds alone, 75.0% (9/12) of confirmed taeniasis cases expelled whole tapeworms, but the mean time period for complete elimination was about 14 h 10 min (range 3 h 20 min to 21 h 20 min), which was much longer than that (2 h) for the study group, whereas in Control Group B treated with areca nut extract alone, only 63.6% (7/11) of taeniasis cases discharged whole tapeworms, and the mean time period was 6 h 27 min (range 1-22 h). Mild side effects included
nausea
and dizziness in about 46.3% of patients with the pumpkin seeds/areca nut extract treatment, but all discomforts were transient and well tolerated. In conclusion, a synergistic effect of pumpkin seed and areca nut extract on Taenia spp. tapeworms was confirmed in the current study, primarily in producing an increased rate of effect on
tapeworm
expulsion (average time 2 h for combination vs 6-21 h for individual extracts). The pumpkin seed/areca combined treatment was indicated to be safe and highly effective (89%) for human taeniasis.
