The pathological features of 14 cases of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) occurring in Uganda over an 8 year period are described. Three cases were clinically proven and in all 14 cases a chronic meningoencephalitis was found. In 2 cases there was histological evidence of ganglion radiculitis and in one of these chronic choroiditis and peripheral neuritis associated with chronic myositis were present. The cardiac lesions consisted of a chronic pancarditis of varying degree in 8 cases and in 3 a generalized valvulitis was observed. In 2 cases, specially investigated, generalized lesions of the conducting system were noticed. Previous histopathological descriptions of HAT are briefly reviewed. The present findings are compared with some of those recorded in human american trypanosomiasis and experimental African trypanosomiasis.

Laryngeal paralysis and trypanosomiasis were diagnosed in a 12-year-old Labrador Retriever. Bilateral vocal fold resection and partial excision of the left aryepiglottic fold resolved the dog's respiratory difficulty. Trypomastigotes resembling Trypanosoma cruzi were seen in blood smears during hospitalization. In spite of treatment with nifurtimox and dexamethasone, the dog died. Histologic examination of tissues did not reveal amastigotes of T cruzi or granulomatous myositis previously described in canine trypanosomiasis reported from North America. The lack of granulomatous myositis and amastigotes in muscle is unusual and suggests a strain variation in the behavior of T cruzi.

A quantitative and qualitative study was conducted on the Auerbach and Meissner plexuses of the esophagus of four chagasic dogs sacrificed during the acute phase of infection. Ganglionitis and periganglionitis of the Auerbach plexus ranged from mild to moderate and induced significant neuronal lesions, especially in two animals. The ganglions of the Meissner plexus were observed in small number which did not permit any analysis. Mild or moderate myositis was observed mainly in the lower third of the esophagus and was rarely associated with amastigote nests. Ganglion and neuron counts did not demonstrate denervation. Although the formation of megaesophagus was not induced in any dog, lesions of the Auerbach plexus and myocells of the esophagus were observed during the acute phase of chagasic infection. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic quantitative and qualitative study of the Auerbach and Meissner plexuses of the esophagus in experimental trypanosomiasis cruzi.
