The inoculation of equine herpesvirus type 3 (EHV3) strain 65/61 into the amniotic cavity of a mare 6-7 months pregnant resulted in abortion 11 days later. Following abortion typical lesions of coital exanthema were not observed in the genital tract of the mare, nor was EHV3 isolated from her. Serological evidence, however, indicated that the mare was infected with EHV3 following inoculation. Grossly the foetal disease was characterised by placentitis, focal ulcerative dermatitis, focal necrosis of the lungs and a striking diptheritic gastritis. Sixteen 1- to 7-week-old pregnant specific-pathogen free cats were inoculated orally with Toxoplasma gondii cysts. Fetuses and neonatal kittens were examined for toxoplasma infection by inoculating suspensions of their tissues into mice. Toxoplasma gondii was not isolated from 23 fetuses and 16 newborn kittens from 13 queens. Six (3 litters) of the 15 kittens from the 3 remaining queens were killed on the day of or a day after birth, and the remaining 9 kittens were housed with their mothers for 7 to 33 days. None of the 9 kittens from the 2 litters examined between 0 and 33 days of age was infected with T gondii. In the other litter, T gondii was isolated from 3 kittens killed at 9, 16, and 22 days of age but not from 3 littermates killed on days 1, 1, and 22. Internal organs from the 3 kittens with proved toxoplasma infectivity in mice were examined histologically. Multifocal granulomatous encephalitis,

, and interstitial pneumonia were found in all 3 kittens. Toxoplasma forms were demonstrated histologically in the tissues of 2 of these kittens. The mode of toxoplasma infection in newborn kittens was not determined but did not appear to be either transplacental or via fecal contamination from oocysts excreted by the mother cat. Evidence obtained in these experiments suggests that transplacental toxoplasma infection in the cat is not an important epidemiologic factor in perpetuation of the disease in the feline population.

and septicemia caused by Acinetobacter calcoaceticus were diagnosed in a mare. The infection was characterized clinically by ventral swelling and edema, diarrhea, listlessness, and rectal temperature of 39.4 C. The mare was treated symptomatically for 2 days but died on the 3rd day. Conditions seen at necropsy were

. Lymph nodes were moderately enlarged throughout the body. Gross lesions in musculature were edema, scarring, petechiae, and an occasional exxhymosis. The enteritis was catarrhal, with excessive mucus and moderate hyperemia. The typhlitis and colitis were hemorrhagic. The swollen liver had a diffuse mottled pale and red pattern. Microscopic lesions in skeletal muscle consisted of petechiation, necrosis, scarring, and edema. Cardiac muscle was also scarred and necrotic, but edema was not prominent. Periacinal necrosis was found in the liver. Acinetobacter calcoaceticus was isolated from myocardium and liver.

A 55-year-old female was admitted to our hospital because of high fever, nonproductive cough and dyspnea. Initially she had been treated with cephem antibiotics by a local doctor. However, acute respiratory failure due to severe pneumonia developed. The partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood was 55.5 Torr. Her chest X-ray revealed wide-spread infiltrates with air bronchograms throughout the entire left lung, and pleural effusions were also present in the chest CT scan. Because the patient had a history of the contact with birds, we suspected psittacosis and administered Minocycline immediately. As a result, her clinical condition improved and the abnormal shadow on the chest X-ray film improved markedly in three days. Because the serum titer of a complement fixation test against Chlamydia rose to 1:512, we made the diagnosis of psittacosis. In addition, femoral muscle pain, and a high level of serum GOT, GPT, CK, Aldolase and Myoglobin indicated

Simultaneous primary infection with HIV and CMV in an 18-year-old woman led to an acute cytotoxic reaction, manifesting as pancytopenia,
hepatitis
, nephritis, perimyocarditis, and
myositis
. Within 14 days parameters indicating acute cell damage reverted to normal. Two weeks later transient alopecia totalis developed. Initially, HIV-antigen but no HIV antibodies were present. Within 3 weeks HIV-IgG antibodies appeared while HIV antigen disappeared. Anti-CMV-IgM was clearly and anti-CMV-IgG questionably positive; IgM persisted further, while IgG remained definitely undetectable. We speculate that a particular HIV-induced imbalance of the immune system led to a generalized severe cytotoxic reaction to a simultaneous infection with CMV.

Bovine fetuses submitted to the California Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System were evaluated during a 2-year period (1987 to 1989) for the presence of multifocal necrotizing nonsuppurative encephalitis, nonsuppurative myocarditis, or tissue protozoa. Eighty-two of 445 (18%) fetuses submitted met these histologic criteria. Fetuses were from 54 dairy and two beef herds located throughout the state. In 17 fetuses (21%) protozoa were found in fetal tissues. Protozoa were found in brain parenchyma of ten fetuses (12%), in endothelial cells in four fetuses (5%), in cardiac myofibers in one fetus (1%), and were associated with endothelial cells in two fetuses (2%). In most fetuses there were no significant gross pathologic findings other than autolysis. While aborted fetuses were from 3 to 9 months gestation, the majority were between 5 and 7 months gestation. . Nonsuppurative inflammation was also found in decreasing frequency, in the adrenal medulla, kidney, mesentery or abdominal fat, placenta, and lung. In two fetuses (Nos. 1 and 2), the location and morphology of the protozoa were compatible with Sarcocystis spp. The identity of protozoa in the remaining 15 fetuses is unknown. The histopathologic changes in these 82 fetuses and the presence of protozoa in 21% of the fetuses suggest these abortions are due to fetal protozoal infections.

The clinical and laboratory features of 29 patients who had one of three anti-aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase autoantibodies, anti-Jo1 (histidyl-tRNA synthetase), anti-PL12 (alanyl-tRNA synthetase) or anti-PL7 (threonyl-tRNA synthetase) were analysed and compared with the findings of other published reports. These autoantibodies were found to be associated with a syndrome delineated by inflammatory
myositis
(24 patients) and pulmonary fibrosis (23 of 29), but also including inflammatory arthritis (26/29), keratoconjunctivitis sicca (17/29), sclerodactyly (21/29), Raynaud's phenomenon (27/29),
hepatitis
(8/29) and subcutaneous calcinosis (7/29). The most important clinical determinant of outcome in this group of patients was the severity of the interstitial pulmonary disease. No patient fulfilled the classification criteria for systemic lupus erythematosus, although 10 had autoantibodies to extractable nuclear antigens including Ro, La, RNP, and Sm, and two patients had anti-dsDNA antibodies. Although it seems unlikely that anti-aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase antibodies are directly responsible for causing disease, they may provide an important clue to the aetiology of this unusual syndrome.

Asymmetric affection of the major lower limb joints is a characteristic feature of the joint syndrome in yersiniosis-associated arthritis. The sacroiliac articulations are frequently (47% cases) involved. In addition, yersiniosis-associated arthritis concurs with the signs and symptoms of systemic disease--gastroenterocolitis, myocardiopathy and myocarditis, erythema nodosum,

and myalgia, enteropathy; changes in the CNS typical for the astheno-neurotic syndrome are frequently present. Comparison of the immunological assay data in complicated and uncomplicated yersiniosis shows equally high levels of IgG and CIC. High anti-DNA antibody titres are more frequently found in the serum of uncomplicated yersiniosis patients. ELISA quantitation of specific IgA, IgM, and IgG class antibodies in yersiniosis-associated arthritis patients demonstrated persistence of all the three antibody classes or of IgA-IgG combination in cases with most severe of the joint syndrome. In the presence of cardiac disease, patients were found to have high titres of antibodies reactive with the cardiac interstitial tissue, while in authentically diagnosed myocarditis cases with the sarcolemma. The investigation findings strongly suggest a high degree of involvement of immune and autoimmune processes in the pathogenesis of arthritides secondary to Yersinia infection.
