In 8 patients, an
inflammatory polyarthropathy
simulating rhizomelic pseudo-rheumatoid arthritis or early RA was the presenting feature of a myeloproliferative or myelodysplasic syndrome. Clinical, radiological, joint cytology and synovial histology findings are analysed. They suggested a link between joint and hematological disorders. Eleven similar cases were found in the literature. The pathophysiological mechanisms are discussed. Anemia, thrombocythemia and excessive monocytosis may be suggestive of
myelodysplasia
, in particular if the onset of the inflammatory rheumatic disorder is atypical.
