We evaluated the frequency of cerebral infarction in 131 patients with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, myotonic dystrophy, Becker's muscular dystrophy, or Friedreich's ataxia. Electrocardiographic abnormalities were found in 83% of patients with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, 56% with myotonic dystrophy, 50% with Becker's muscular dystrophy, and 25% with Friedreich's ataxia. Atrial flutter occurred in 2.3% of the patients, and atrial fibrillation in only 0.9%. Evidence of cerebral infarction was found in only 2 patients (1.5%). Both patients had cardiomyopathy and either atrial fibrillation or flutter. Despite frequent cardiac involvement, cerebral infarction is an uncommon occurrence in patients with inherited neuromuscular diseases.

The concept of stem cell therapy, the repair of damaged or diseased tissue by transplantation of healthy cells, is deceptively simple. This simplicity has led to the hype among desperate patients, their doctors and the media: it would seem that every ailment can be treated with stem cells. At this time, however, the scientific truth is mostly disappointing. The recent claim from Korea of a major breakthrough - the ability to grow stem cells from cloned embryos - turned out to be fraudulent. With the exception ofapplications in haematologic diseases, skin wounds, and bone and cartilage diseases, most of the putative therapeutic applications of stem cell therapy are still under preclinical investigation. These include the treatment of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, paraplegia, cerebral infarction, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy. The treatment of cardiac infarction is currently being investigated in clinical trials.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked form of muscular dystrophy characterized by progressive limb-girdle distribution of muscle weakness. Morbidity related to cardiomyopathy (CMO) is common, but cerebral infarction (CI) is relatively rare in these patients. We report a case of a pontine infarct in a patient with DMD and advanced CMO, and review the published data on CMO and CI in patients with DMD.
