We have established a human-human hybridoma producing a monoclonal antibody against a tumor-associated carbohydrate-specific antigen, Hanganutziu-Deicher (HD) antigen. Human spleen lymphocytes from a patient with
esophageal varices
complicated with liver cirrhosis were cultured in serum-free medium and co-stimulated with both anti-human mu-chain antibodies and supernatants of concanavalin A-stimulated human spleen cell culture (ConA sup). The activated lymphocytes were subsequently primed in vitro with particulate HD3 antigen and fused with a parent hybrid
myeloma
cell line, KR-12. A hybridoma, 1F43E31G7 produced anti-HD human monoclonal antibody (IgM lambda). This monoclonal antibody reacted strongly with N-glycolylneuraminyl alpha 2-3 lactosylceramide (HD3) and slightly with N-glycolylneuraminyl alpha 2-3 lactoneotetraosylceramide (HD5), but did not react with N-glycolylneuraminyl alpha 2-3 lactoneohexaosylceramide (HD7), N-acetylneuraminyl alpha 2-3 lactosylceramide (GM3) and other derivatives of HD3 prepared by chemical modification of the sialic acid residue of HD3, which indicates that the monoclonal antibody is directed precisely toward the terminal sialic acid and whole structure of HD3.

Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) may be associated with various neoplasma. Two additional cases are reported here. In the first case, a 58-year old alcoholic man had been presenting for two years with clinical signs of PCT. The diagnosis was confirmed by porphyrin assays in the urine. He also had cirrhosis of the liver. During a routine fibroscopy in search of
oesophageal varices
, a gastric adenocarcinoma was discovered by chance. Following partial gastrectomy the skin lesions of PCT improved dramatically within a few weeks, leaving only moderate cutaneous fragility. Urinary porphyrin assays performed 18 and 40 months after gastrectomy gave normal results, although no specific treatment had been prescribed. The second case concerns a 67-year old man, also alcoholic, with clinical and biochemical PCT. For the previous 12 months he had received chemotherapy (Adriamycin, then BCNU combined with melphalan, vincristine and prednisone) for multiple IgA K
myeloma
. The
myeloma
was active when PCT was diagnosed with, in particular, chronic anaemia. Treatment with chloroquine improved the cutaneous signs of PCT but had no effect on urinary porphyrins after 5 months. Comments PCT has been reported to be associated with cancers. The best known of these cancers is primary carcinoma of the liver (4, 27, 32), but its frequency is diversely evaluated depending on the diagnostic methods (e. g. patient autopsied or not) and on the selection of patients (age, duration of the disease).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The present report describes a 50-year-old female recently diagnosed with
multiple myeloma
who presented with hepatosplenomegaly, miliary-type hyper enhancing liver tumors, and
esophageal varices
. We performed a transjugular liver biopsy when liver biopsy was requested to evaluate the miliary-type liver lesions. This was done to lower the risk of bleeding given the patient's anemia and probable portal hypertension. This approach was successful in safely providing diagnostic samples for surgical pathology and flow cytometry to assess the nature of focal miliary liver lesions. It also proved portal hypertension.
