have been tested for their glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) content by means of the rocket electrophoresis technique. Meningiomas and neurinomas were low in GFAP. Metastases had a low level of GFAP except when contaminated with surrounding tissue. Non-nervous tumors such as

, myeloplaxoma and adenocarcinoma gave negative results. More detailed correlations with histological observations have been looked for in glial tumors. Low levels of GFAP were always associated with signs of malignancy such as mitoses and giant or atypical cells, whereas high levels of GFAP were correlated with the presence of well-preserved astrocytes.

In a population-based case-control study in Sweden on
multiple myeloma
, the occurrence of different diseases in relatives, particularly hematologic malignancies and different types of cancer, was investigated. Through a questionnaire mailed to all living subjects, i.e. cases and controls, and to the next-of-kin for deceased subjects, information was obtained on malignant and certain other diseases among relatives. All malignant diseases reported among first-degree relatives were verified, if possible, through parochial authorities and the Swedish Cancer Register. In total, data from 239 cases with
myeloma
and 220 controls were analyzed. An increased risk was found for persons with first-degree relatives with hematologic malignancies (relative risk [RR] = 2.36, 90 percent confidence interval [CI ) = 0.90-6.15), and also with
multiple myeloma

cells were fused with spleen cells from mice that had been immunized with a human ependymoma derived cell line, KMS II. Hybridomas producing monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were screened and cloned. Specificity of the antibody was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and/or indirect immunofluorescence assay. One of the MAbs, designated Ep-C4 (subclass = IgG1), reacted with two cell lines derived from ependymoma but did not react with 17 cell lines derived from other types of

nor with 4 neuroblastoma cell lines or 19 cell lines derived from carcinoma, hematopoietic tumors and amnion. Indirect immunofluorescence and immuno-electron microscopy studies revealed that the antigen recognized by MAb Ep-C4 was located on cell surface membrane. The membrane antigen of KMS II cells, immunoprecipitated by MAb Ep-C4, was a protein of 81,000 dalton. The reactivity of MAb Ep-C4 was further examined using immunofluorescence and/or immunoperoxidase methods and frozen sections and short-term cultures of various types of brain tumors. No cross-reactivity with normal adult or fetal brain tissues was detected by absorption assay and immunoperoxidase staining. Our results suggest that the antigen defined by MAb Ep-C4 is specific for ependymoma cells, and different from the antigens of glioma cells or other neuroectodermal-derived cells previously described.

The cause-specific mortality experience of 2,509 active and retired members of the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers International Union (OCAW) who worked at three oil refineries in the Beaumont/Port Arthur area of Texas was examined to determine whether there might be unusual patterns of fatal disease related to workplace exposures. Deaths that occurred between 1943 and 1979 were identified from membership records of the OCAW headquarters in Denver and from the records of union locals in Texas which represent workers at the three refineries. Death certificates were obtained from state vital records offices for the decedents. Cause-specific Proportionate Mortality Ratios (PMRs) were calculated using the mortality experience of the U.S. general population as a standard. Excess mortality from stomach cancer occurred among active union members who worked at Refinery A and among active and retired members who worked at Refineries B and C. PMRs for leukemia,

, and other lymphomas were elevated, especially among retired workers. Relative frequencies of

deaths were significantly elevated among active members at all three refineries and slightly elevated among retirees at Refineries A and C. Findings suggest that oil refinery workers may have elevated risks of these cancers and indicate that more definitive studies are necessary.

Rapid growth of a glioblastoma during therapy for
multiple myeloma
is reported. A 53-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a right costal tumor, which was resected. The diagnosis was plasmocytoma. Urine protein electrophoresis showed a monoclonal peak in the region of gamma-globulin, and examination of the bone marrow revealed 17.8% of atypical plasma cells. Brain magnetic resonance (MR) imaging detected two small lesions, but these could not be identified as

. He received chemotherapy (melphalan 10 mg/day and predonin 30 mg/day for 4 days) and was discharged. Two weeks after discharge, he was readmitted because of left hemiparesis. T1-weighted MR imaging showed two large hypointense lesions in the right frontal lobe, with ring-like enhancement following Gd-DTPA infusion. 1H-MR spectroscopy showed typical findings of tumor with increased choline and lactic acid peaks. 201Tl SPECT revealed high accumulation in both early and delayed images. Right carotid angiography showed a hypervascular tumor with venous filling and mass effect. The lesions were resected via right frontal craniotomy, followed by intraoperative radiation and placement of an Ommaya reservoir. Histological examination showed the tumors were glioblastoma. The brain between the tumors also showed the typical appearance of glioblastoma, suggesting that the lesions were continuous. Postoperatively, the patient's left hemiparesis disappeared. Focal irradiation has emerged as a useful modality in the management of malignant brain tumors. Its main limitation is radiation necrosis. We report on the radiation dose distribution in the cerebellum of a patient who developed imaging and autopsy diagnosis of radiation necrosis after permanent iodine-125 implants for a solitary osseous plasmacytoma of her left occipital condyle. A 55-year-old woman initially presented with neck and occipital pain and a lytic lesion of her left occipital condyle. A cytological diagnosis of solitary osseous plasmacytoma was made by transpharyngeal needle biopsy. After an initial course of external beam radiation, the patient required further treatment with systemic chemotherapy 21 months later for clinical and radiographic progression of her disease. She ultimately required subtotal surgical resection of an anaplastic plasmacytoma with intracranial extension. Permanent low-activity iodine-125 seeds were implanted in the tumor cavity. Satisfactory local control was achieved. However, clinical and imaging signs of radiation damage appeared 28 months after iodine-125 seed implantation. Progressive systemic
myeloma
led to her death 11 years after presentation and 9 years after seed implantation. Radiation dose distribution is described, with a discussion of toxicity from focal radiation dose escalation.

Age-specific and age-standardized rates (ASR) of registered cancers for nine communities in the U.S.A. (21.8 million inhabitants, mainly white) were obtained from IARC data (1978-82, 1983-87, 1988-92). The percentage of people supplied with "optimally" fluoridated drinking water (FD) obtained from the Fluoridation Census 1985, U.S.A. were used for regression analysis of incidence rates of cancers at thirty six sites (ICD-WHO, 1957). About two-thirds of sites of the body (ICD) were associated positively with FD, but negative associations were noted for lip cancer, melanoma of the skin, and cancers of the prostate and thyroid gland. In digestive organs the stomach showed only limited and small intestine no significant link. However, cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx, colon and rectum, hepato-biliary and urinary organs were positively associated with FD. This was also the case for bone cancers in male, in line with results of rat experiments.

This may indicate a complexity of mechanisms of action of fluoride in the body, especially in view of the coexising positive and negative correlations with the fluoridation index. The likelihood of fluoride acting as a genetic cause of cancer requires consideration.
