We described a case of XYY syndrome associated with motor
neuropathy
. The case was a 27-year-old male, who had 47-XYY chromosome karyotype. His symptoms were distal dominant muscle weakness and muscle atrophy in his lower extremities without objective sensory disturbance. He had no
mental retardation
or family history of neurologic diseases. The electrophysiological and pathological examinations revealed that his symptoms were due to peripheral motor
neuropathy
(neuronal type). His motor
neuropathy
may be of sporadic type. There may be some relation in the pathogenesis between XYY syndrome and motor
neuropathy
, although in the literature, XYY syndrome with motor
neuropathy
had not been reported so far.

Disialotransferrin developmental deficiency (DDD) syndrome is a recently described disease consisting of hepatopathy,
mental retardation
and
neuropathy
. The biochemical findings indicate a defect in the assembly of the carbohydrate moiety that is common to the secretory glucoproteins. It is believed to be of autosomal recessive inheritance. An ophthalmological examination of ten children suffering from this syndrome showed that all had ocular involvement. Esotropia (and deficient abduction) was found in all ten patients. Seven children had retinitis pigmentosa which was verified by an ERG in three. One patient had retinal signs suggestive of retinitis pigmentosa. The high incidence of ocular findings in the DDD syndrome, which are reported for the first time, indicate that an ophthalmological examination is a helpful diagnostic tool in this disease.

In 1971, Andermann and Andermann described an autosomal recessive syndrome found within the Charlevoix and the Saguenay populations (Quebec, Canada) characterized by agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) associated with motor and sensory neuropathy,
mental retardation
and dysmorphic features. A study of CT in 64 patients demonstrated a total ACC in 37 cases (57.8%), partial ACC in 6 cases (9.4%) and the presence of the corpus callosum in 21 cases (32.8%). The latter was confirmed by MRI in 3 cases. CT of patients without ACC revealed a high frequency of developmental or degenerative midline anomalies, particularly interhemispheric fissure enlargement and posterior fossa atrophy. The clinical presentation and the natural course of the
neuropathy
, the intellectual impairment and the behavioural manifestations are identical amongst individuals with or without ACC. Individuals with or without ACC are found within the same family and often within the same sibship. These observations support the hypothesis of a single genetic syndrome in which the constant manifestation is the motor and sensory neuropathy.

We report a case of giant axonal neuropathy in a 14 year-old turkish boy with progressive chronic
neuropathy
and central involvement with
mental retardation
. CT showed a low density and MRI imaging multiple cavities and hypersignals of the white matter. Nerve and skin biopsies revealed an accumulation of neurofilaments in axonal swellings and an accumulation of intermediate filaments in fibroblasts, Schwann cells, endothelial cells. These findings are in accordance with the reported cases. Giant axonal neuropathy results from a generalized disorder of the intermediate filaments, but the precise biochemical defect is unknown. We would agree with Maia (1988) to name this affection "Giant Axonal Disease".

In a Nigerian town with a stable population of 20,000, a door-to-door survey was conducted, using a questionnaire involving a complete census and a simple neurological evaluation which had previously showed a 95% sensitivity and an 80% specificity for detecting neurological disease. Positive responders were evaluated and categorised, using agreed criteria for diagnoses. Nearly 100% cooperation was obtained. Life prevalence ratio for at least one episode of headache was 51/1000. Crude point prevalence ratio for migrainous headache was 5.3/100, and peak age-specific ratio was in the first decade. Prevalence ratio for epilepsy was 533/100,000 and peak age-specific prevalence ratio occurred in the 5-14 years age groups. The prevalence ratio for peripheral nerve disorders was 268/100,000, and age-specific prevalence ratio for tropical
neuropathy
increased with age. Prevalence ratio for stroke was rather low at 58/100,000, but was probably due to the people's attitude to the disabled elderly and high mortality of stroke which showed annual mortality rate of 70/100,000 which increased with age to 1519/100,000 per year in the eighth decade. Crude prevalence ratios (cases per 100,000) for others are 112 for neurological complications (including sciatica) of spondylosis, 15 each for poliomyelitis, motor neurone disease, development speech disorders, 10 each for syncope, hereditary neuropathies. She had jaw deviation and tremor, neck tremor with retrocollis, involuntary pronation of the right arm, coarse postural and severe action tremor, and tight pen grip with dystonic wrist extension on writing. The 18q- syndrome should be added to the list of genetic causes of secondary dystonia. A karyotype analysis should be considered in secondary dystonias, particularly when there are associated features such as short stature and endocrinopathies.

A 33 year-old man with undiagnosed
neuropathy
showing
mental retardation
and involuntary movements has been nourished for a long period by total parenteral nutrition (TPN) because of frequent vomiting and repeated aspiration pneumonitis. After ten months' TPN, macrocytic anemia and neutropenia developed and iron preparation was administered without hematological improvement. Bone marrow examination revealed normocellular marrow without features of megaloblastosis and dysplasia. In some erythroblasts and immature myeloid cells, vacuoles were observed and mature granulocytes were reduced in the bone marrow. Both serum copper and ceruloplasmin were very low (12 micrograms/dl and 7mg/dl, respectively). Thus, oral administration of copper sulfate resulted in marked increase of reticulocytes and subsequent improvement of anemia and neutropenia within two months. Copper deficiency is a rare condition, but during an unusual nutrition such as TNP, hematological abnormality due to copper deficiency must be noticed to occur.

M6 is a neuronal membrane glycoprotein that may have an important role in neural development. This molecule was initially defined by a monoclonal antibody that affected the survival of cultured cerebellar neurons and the outgrowth of neurites. The nature of the antigen was discovered by expression cDNA cloning using this monoclonal antibody. Two distinct murine M6 cDNAs (designated M6a and M6b) whose deduced amino acid sequences were remarkably similar to that of the myelin proteolipid protein were previously isolated. We have isolated partial human cDNA and genomic clones encoding M6a and M6b and have characterized them by restriction mapping, Southern hybridization with cDNA probes, and sequence analysis. We have localized these genes within the human genome by FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization). The human M6a gene is located at 4q34, and the M6b gene is located at Xp22.2. A number of human neurological disorders have been mapped to the Xp22 region, including Aicardi syndrome (MIM 304050), Rett syndrome (MIM 312750), X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth

(MIM 302801), and X-linked
mental retardation
syndromes (MRX1, MIM 309530). This raises the possibility that a defect in the M6b gene is responsible for one of these neurological disorders.
