Results of a population-based study of the prevalence of mental retardation among 2- to 9-year-old children in Bangladesh were reported. More than 10,000 children were screened for mental retardation and other disabilities. All children with positive screening results plus a random sample with negative results were referred for clinical evaluations. The prevalence rates per 1,000 of severe and mild mental retardation in this population were 5.9 and 14.4, respectively. As found in studies in developed countries, the prevalence of mild mental retardation was strongly and significantly associated with low socioeconomic status, whereas the association for severe mental retardation was relatively weak and not significant.

Linkage analysis of a non-specific form of X linked mental retardation (MRX) was performed with 16 polymorphic markers spanning the entire X chromosome in a three generation Italian family, including four male patients with moderate mental retardation. One obligate carrier woman had mild mental retardation and another two had normal intelligence. The results indicate tight linkage to DNA markers DXS84 (L754), DXS164 (pERT87-15), and DXS278 (CRI-S232). A maximum lod score of 2.11 at theta = 0.00 was obtained with DXS164 and DXS278. The linked region spanned chromosomal bands Xp21.1-Xp22.3, that is, the same portion of the X chromosome where MRX2 and MRX10-13 have been previously localised.

Children diagnosed as mildly mentally retarded were examined with respect to performance on Estes's (1965) span-of-apprehension task. Based on their scores on the Simplified Version of the Intellectual Achievement Responsibility scale, we divided subjects into a "learned-helpless" group and a "mastery-oriented" group. Motivational orientation had a significant effect on performance, with the mastery-oriented subjects demonstrating higher detection accuracies than the learned-helpless subjects. These results have implications regarding not only centrally mediated attentional functioning in children with mental retardation, but also interpretation of certain previous findings with the span-of-apprehension task.

Results of a national survey on mental health services for adults with mild mental retardation sent to directors of psychological services at community mental health centers was discussed. In general, adults with mild mental retardation were less likely to receive the full array of available services. Individuals with mental retardation were not frequent consumers of community mental health services and received differential treatment at these Centers. Implications of these findings were discussed.

MASA syndrome includes mental retardation, adducted thumbs, shuffling gait and aphasia or speech delay. MASA syndrome, X-linked hydrocephalus and X-linked spastic paraplegia have been linked to the same markers on Xq28 and perhaps represent variation in the clinical expression of the same gene or manifestations of different mutant alleles. The present family includes five males in two generations with borderline to mild mental retardation (5/5), speech delay (5/5), spastic paraplegia (5/5), adducted thumbs (2/5) and marked hydrocephalus (1/5). Of these males, four were evaluated by MRI or CT scan and all four were determined to have partial to complete agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). DNA studies confirm linkage to Xq28 probe St14 (DXS52) with a lod score of 2.86 and no recombination. It is not known if X-linked ACC is linked to the same Xq28 region.

The etiology of and suspected risk factors leading to mild mental retardation were analyzed in unselected series of 109 Bahraini school children with this condition born between 1967 and 1982. The cause was considered to be prenatal in 38.5% of the children; perinatal (asphyxia and prematurity), in 11.9%; and postnatal, in 7.4%. In 42% the cause was untraceable. Predisposing background factors associated with mild mental retardation were compared with characteristics of a matched control group from community schools. An illiterate father, consanguinity, and a relative with mental retardation were significantly more common among the sample with mild mental retardation. These results are not consistent with the view that mild retardation is predominantly cultural-familial and not pathological in nature.

Adults without mental retardation commonly fail to notice nominally obvious aspects of naturalistic scenes (Becklen & Cervone, 1983). We replicated and extended this effect to adults with mild mental retardation. Adults with and without retardation viewed a 60-second videotape of an amateur basketball game. They were instructed to press a button whenever the ball was passed. At one point, a woman carrying an open umbrella walked bodily through the ongoing action. Becklen and Cervone found that only 35% of adults without retardation noticed this unexpected event and that noticing was not predicted by task performance prior to the woman's appearance. In the present study noticing rates for subjects without retardation were similar to those reported by Becklen and Cervone and noticing by subjects with mental retardation was at least as high. Task performance for subjects with mental retardation was significantly lower than that of subjects without retardation, but noticing was not predicted by task performance (prior to the unexpected event) for either group. Results were interpreted in the context of an ecological approach to attention.

Nine and 14-year-old children with mild mental retardation and children without mental retardation matched for mental and chronological age were first shown a novel category made up of five visual figures. They were then given a recognition test with a set containing the previously presented figures, novel category members, and the category prototype. The relative contribution of prototypical and exemplar-specific information to subjects' performance on the recognition test was evaluated. Results showed that the children without mental retardation employed both forms of information in arriving at a recognition decision whereas both of the retarded groups tended to rely only on prototype information. Use of exemplar-specific information was also found to be positively correlated with IQ and, in particular, with measures of short-term memory span.

Leisure activities were examined for young adults with mild mental retardation. Some had disappeared from mental retardation services after leaving school; others were in adult day services. Peers without mental retardation (comparison subjects) were also included. Various leisure activities were combined using cluster analysis. Some adults with mental retardation and some comparison subjects were found in each of the 13 clusters obtained but proportions varied. Leisure patterns were strongly influenced by gender and marital status as well as mental retardation, except for one cluster, Socially Isolated, Impoverished, where there were more adults with mental retardation, irrespective of gender and marital status.

Relations among self-reported social skills, teacher ratings of classroom behavior, and direct observations of social interactions among 87 adolescents with mild mental retardation were investigated and variables predicting the students' task orientation identified. Three information sources were employed. Results demonstrated that the four domains of social skills were related to the students' task orientation. The regression analysis revealed that students who were characterized by better social skills and fewer occurrences of hyperactivity and behavioral difficulties were viewed by teachers as evidencing more compliant and task-oriented behavior, implying their better ability to benefit from the special curriculum. The three sources of information validated one another and added information to the conceptualization and appraisal of social and academic competence among students with mental retardation.
