Whereas in rats injected with estrone for long periods, carcinoma of the genital tract and breast occurred accompanied by other usual estrin effects, it appears that with prolonged injection of testosterone, the females went into permanent vaginal diestrus, the pituitary weights were not above normal limits, somatic growth was not inhibited, and the predominant neoplastic lesions were fibrous tissue tumors in injected areas, some of which became sarcomatous.

cells as well as their multidrug resistant sublines with a wide range of IC(50) values. They also induced apoptosis and caused DNA fragmentation in human

cells. Among the compounds studied, 7 showed the most potent activity of growth inhibition (IC(50) = 17-1711 nM) in several human cancer cells. Given orally, compounds 7 and 13 dose-dependently prolonged the survival of animals inoculated with P388 leukemic cancer cells. N-Heterocyclic indolyl glyoxylamides may be useful as orally active chemotherapeutic agents against cancer and refractory cancerous diseases of multidrug resistance phenotype.

A family history (FH) of breast cancer (BC) is a long recognized risk factor for developing the disease. Also, there have been some reports of links between an FH and some other malignancies (mostly uterus, ovary, and prostate cancers), and an increased risk of developing BC. In this paper we present descriptive report of the occurrence pattern of malignancies in families of BC afflicted patients through 4 generations. Patients included 542 Iranian primary BC cases, presenting at an outpatient clinic for treatment and follow-up. Detailed pedigrees were drawn for each patient, and data for a total of 6220 relatives were gathered. Among the probands, 29.9% and 53.9% had a positive FH of BC and other malignancies (OM) respectively. Mean number of breast cancers was nearly double in maternal-lines versus paternal-line relatives. Also, occurrence of brain, uterus, and colorectal cancers was significantly higher in maternal-line relatives, but conversely, liver cancer showed a tendency toward paternal-line relatives (1st degree relatives excluded). The highest frequency of BC involvement was noted in 2nd degree/2nd generation, and 3rd degree/3rd generation relatives. For OMs, although

was by far the most frequent OM across pedigrees,
uterus cancer
, and hematopoeitic system lesions (leukemia) predominated over

. In this study, we showed that exposure to an ethanol extract of RVS (50 microg/ml) resulted in a synergistic inhibitory effect on cell growth in AGS cells. Growth inhibition was related with the inhibition of proliferation and induction of apoptosis. The extract induces G1-cell cycle arrest through the regulation of cyclins, the induction of p27Kip1, and decrease the CDK2 kinase activity. The upregulated p27Kip1 level is caused by protein stability increment by the reduction of Skp2, a key molecule related with p27Kip1 ubiquitination and degradation, and de novo protein synthesis. RVS extract induces apoptosis through the expression of Bax, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and activation of caspase-3. RVS extract induces G1-cell cycle arrest via accumulation of p27Kip1 controlled by Skp2 reduction and apoptosis passing through an intrinsic pathway in human

One facultative alkaliphilic actinomycete strain YIM 90022 was isolated from hypersaline alkaline soil in Qinghai province, China. An almost-complete 16S rRNA gene sequence (1500 bp) for strain YIM 90022 was obtained. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain YIM 90022 was closely related to four members of the genus Nocardiopsis with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 98.8% (N. exhalans DSM 44407T), 98.5% (N. prasina DSM 43845T), 98.4% (N. metallicus DSM 44598T) and 97.8% (N. listeri DSM 40297T), but represented a distinct phylogenetic lineage. Repetitive element sequence-based PCR (rep-PCR) genomic fingerprinting was evaluated on strain YIM 90022 and its closest relatives to investigate their genetic relatedness. The analysis of the rep-PCR genomic fingerprints showed that strain YIM 90022 was distinguishable from its closest relatives. The polyphasic taxonomic data presented in this study, including its morphology, physiological and biochemical characteristics, chemotaxonomy, 16S rRNA gene sequence-based phylogenetic analysis and rep-PCR genomic fingerprinting, supported the view that strain YIM 90022 represented a potential new species of the genus Nocardiopsis. The NaCl tolerate range was 0-15% (W/V). Cell walls contain meso-diaminopimelic acid and have no diagnostic sugars. Polar lipids are phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine. Major menaquinones are MK-10 (H4, H6). The DNA G + C content is 71.5 mol %.

Soil and sediment samples were collected from saline and alkaline soils or lakes in the Qinghai Province, northwestern China. 145 actinomycete strains were isolated using Glucose-Peptone-Yeast extract agar (GPY) and ISP medium 2 agar supplemented with 1.0 - 3.0 mol/L NaCl at pH 7.5 - 10. The antitumor activities in vitro of the fermentation broth extracts from the 145 test strains were detected in 6 human tumor cell lines (

GXF251L, lung cancer LXFL529L, mammary cancer MAXF401NL, melanoma cancer MEXF462NL, renal cancer RXF486L and
uterus cancer
UXF1138L). Out of 145 test strains, 26 strains were positive in antitumor activities (17.9%), among them 19 strains belong to the genus Nocardiopsis, 7 strains belong to the genus Streptomyces. Then 8 antitumor-positive strains were submitted for 16S rRNA gene amplification and phylogenetic analysis after a comparison of antitumor activities, morphological, physiological characteristics and whole cell amino acids analysis. The results suggested that strain YIM 80139 is a member of a known Streptomyces species S. griseus, while strain YIM 80038 may represent a potential new Streptomyce species, and that the other 6 strains may represent 4 potential new species of the genus Nocardiopsis. The results presented above showed that actinomycetes isolated from saline and alkaline samples are important resources for bioactive compounds, and the abundant microbial diversity in the saline and alkaline environments in the Qinghai Province, Northwestern China is attractive for further investigation.

Scanty information, limited to selected areas of the country, is available on cancer mortality in Brazil. Age-standardized (world population) mortality rates between 1980 and 2004, derived from the WHO database, were computed for all cancers and 24 major cancer sites in Brazil. Joinpoint regression analyses were used to identify the significant changes in trends and estimate annual percent change (APC) in rates. Total cancer mortality rates increased over the last decade in men (APC = 0.5) to reach 101.2/100 000, and in women (APC = 0.3) to reach 71.3/100 000. In men, upward trends were observed for cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx with a rate of 5.9/100 000 in 2000-2004, intestines (whose rate, however was low, i.e. 7.6), prostate (12.2), and leukemias (3.4). Male lung cancer increased until 1993 (APC = 1.39) and decreased thereafter (APC = -0.29), with a relatively low rate of 16.2/100 000 in 2000-2004. In women, there were steady upward trends for cancers of the lung (APC = 2.3), reaching 6.2/100 000 in 2000-2004, and leukemias (2.5). Breast cancer mortality leveled off at around 10/100 000 in the last decade, whereas declines were observed for cancers of the uterus, whose rate (8.3) however, remained comparatively high. The aim of this research was to clarify the relation between the screening rates for five cancers (lung cancer,
stomach cancer
, colorectal cancer,
uterus cancer
, and breast cancer) and their mortality rate by using publicly accessible databases. The used information materials were those prepared by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the Center for Cancer Control and Information Services, and the National Cancer Center. Our results were as follows: 1) regarding stomach and colorectal cancers, a positive correlation was found between the screening rate and the mortality rate (p<0.001); 2) in the relation between the screening rate and the mortality rate according to administrative divisions, the mortality rate decreased significantly when the lung cancer screening rate improved (p<0.005); 3) the mortality rate for breast cancer increased in those aged 50 or over; 4) the mortality rate for
uterus cancer
had been slightly increasing since 1990; and 5) regarding the screening rate, a positive correlation was found between breast cancer and
uterus cancer
(p<0.001). In future, improvement in lifestyle and in the knowledge of cancer should be promoted to enhance the screening rates.

The objective of this study was to provide information on recent trends in cancer mortality in Mexico. We analyzed data provided by the World Health Organization, using joinpoint analysis to detect changes in trends between 1981 and 2007. For most cancers, mortality was upward but started to decline in the late 1980's/early 1990's for both sexes. Overall cancer mortality was 75.53/100 000 men, world standard, and 69.2/100 000 women in 2005-2007. Mortality from
uterine cancer
declined by approximately 2.5% per year in the 1990s, and by approximately 5% per year in the last decade, but its rates remained exceedingly high (9.7/100 000 in 2005-2007). Other major declines over recent years were those of
stomach cancer
(approximately 2.5% per year, with rates of 6.6/100 000 in men and 4.9/100 000 in women in 2005-2007) and lung cancer (2-2.5% per year, 11.0/100 000 in men and 4.5/100 000 in women in 2005-2007). Mortality leveled off only since the early 1990s for breast and prostate, and since the late 1990s for colorectal cancer.
