A cell line designated as BV9 was established in culture from a transplantable rat
stomach cancer
, which was originally induced in the glandular stomach of a Wistar rat by p.o. administration of N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine. The monolayer cells, which have been subcultured for more than 35 passages, revealed pleomorphic features. Chromosomal analysis showed hypertetraploidy (mode, 95), and marker chromosomes were present. Cultured cells were injected s.c. into cyclophosphamide-conditioned syngeneic rats and produced tubular adenocarcinomas resembling the original
tumor
.

Ninety-nine specimens obtained from 53 patients with
stomach cancer
were cultured for about 3 days by means of the stainless steel grid method. In vitro effects of antitumor drugs on the cancer cells were evaluated autoradiographically or biochemically using a liquid scintillation counter to measure the uptake of 3H-thymidine. The radioactivity of the labeled
tumor
cells of both control fragments and fragments affected by drugs varied greatly among individual tumors. Therefore, the in vitro efficacy of antitumor drugs was represented as a comparison with that of control fragments. Positive correlation between in vitro tests and the clinical effects of antitumor drugs was observed in the specimens of 18 cases.

From personal interviews obtained for 7,518 incident cases of invasive cancer from the population-based Third National Cancer Survey, the quantitative lifetime use of cigarettes, cigars, pipes, unsmoked tobacco, wine, beer, hard liquor, and combined alcohol were recorded, as well as education and family income level. In an initial screening analysis of these data, Mantel-Haenszel 2 X 2 contingency tabulations and multiple regression analyses were used to compare each specific cancer site with controls from other sites to test for associations with the "exposure variables." Significant positive associations with cigarette smoking were found for cancers of the lung, larynx, oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, bladder, kidney, and uterine cervix. Other forms of tobacco were associated with cancers of the oral cavity, larynx, lung, and cervix. Consumption of wine, beer, hard liquor, and all combined showed positive associations with neoplasms of the oral cavity larynx, esophagus, colon, rectum, breast, and thyroid gland. College educaton and high income both showed positive associations with cancers of the breast, thyroid gland, uterine corpus, and melanomas in males. These same indicators of high socioeconomic status showed inverse associations with invasive neoplasms of the uterine cervix, lung, lip-tongue, and colon in females. College attendance (but not income) showed an inverse association with
stomach cancer
and positive association with pancreatic cancer in males. Still other
tumor
sties showed "suggestive" associations with each of these exposure variables. In the analyses producing these results, age, race, sex, smoking, drinking, education, income, parity, foreign birth, marital status, and geographic location were used as stratification variables separately or in combination when appropriate to assess and control for their potentially confounding affects and to examine results in different strata to assess interaction.

To precisely determine the process spread in
gastric cancer
, in 90 patients left prescalene biopsy was performed simultaneously with the operative procedure on the stomach. In 20% of the patients the histological examination of serial sections showed
gastric cancer
metastases in non-enlarged supraclavicular lymph nodes. In vast majority of the observations a supraclavicular metastasis diagnosed only histologically was a manifestation of the
tumor
process spread. In these patients only explorative laparotomy or palliative resection was performed, followed by lethal issue (but one case) in the early postoperative period. The rationale of incuding prescalene biopsy in the scheme of examination for
gastric cancer
is discussed.

The results of combination therapy of 66 patients with inoperable
gastric cancer
are presented. The complex of therapeutic measures included: preoperative gammatherapy with a single dose of 350--400 rad and total dosage up to 2400--3000 rad, palliative operations or explorative laparotomy with subsequent postoperative irradiation (up to 4500--6000 rad) or chemotherapy with 5-fluoruracil (up to 3--5 grams). The average survival of patients was 9.3 +/- 0.9 months, and it was dependent on
tumor
process spread and the kind of surgical intervention. Radiotherapy is shown to effect positively the clinical course of the disease and patient's survival.

In order to investigate the effect of splenectomy on tumor growth, splenectomy was performed in DDS mice transplanted subcutaneously with Ehrlich ascites
tumor
cells before and after the transplantation. It was found that, in the first control group receiving sham operation, all the mice died of
tumor
; in the second group that underwent splenectomy 1 week before the transplantation the
tumor
regressed in every case; in the third group that received splenectomy 5 days after transplantation when
tumor
became established, the
tumor
regression was observed in 85% of the animals, and in the fourth group that underwent splenectomy 10 days after transplantation, all the animals died of
tumor
earlier than the sham-operated first group. In the follow-up observations of 389 patients with
gastric cancer
who underwent gastrectomy alone and 89 cases who received gastrectomy combined with splenectomy, the 5-year survival rate of the latter group tended to show a better prognosis in a relatively early stage. It was concluded that splenectomy might inhibit the growth of
tumor
in a certain early stage, in both animals and humans, and the possible mechanism of this effect of splenectomy was discussed from the immunological aspects.

The leukocyte migration assay proved to be a very sensitive tool in
gastric cancer
diagnosis. When patients' leukocytes were exposed to a panel of 3m KCl extracts, positive reactivity was found at a rate of 92%. All patients with non-malignant gastric diseases exhibiting "positive" reactivity with gastric
tumor
extracts also showed a pathological migration index with a 3m KCl extract of normal gastric mucosa, while only in 16% of patients with
gastric cancer
leukocyte migration was influenced by this extract. Using gastric
tumor
extracts patients with colorectal cancer showed a cross-reactivity in 67% and patients with carcinoma of the pancreas and oesophagus in 42% of the tests. Three months after curative surgery most patients' leukocyte migration was found to be in the normal range. Positive reactivity reappeared in patients with local recurrence or metastases.

Gastric carcinoma following operation for benign peptic ulcer disease has been considered rare but nine patients have been seen during the past five years. All were male patients, the average time interval from prior ulcer operation to development of cancer was 17 years, but was a short as ten years. The symptoms of cancer are vague and the diagnosis is often delayed. Fiberoptic endoscopy with biopsy of suspicious areas is the most accurate diagnostic approach. Resection of the
tumor
is indicated if feasible. The poor prognosis of this malignancy is documented. The evidence is reviewed that the creation of achlorhydria with bile reflux increases the risk of development of gastric carcinoma. All patients who undergo peptic ulcer operation require careful long-term follow-up. Vague gastrointestinal symptoms occurring ten years or more after peptic ulcer operation require full evaluation to exclude the presence of
gastric cancer

142 cases of
gastric cancer
, 20 cases of chronic ulcer, 800 gastrobiopsies, performed for chronic gastritis, were studied morphologically. Adenocarcinoma and undifferentiated
gastric cancer
were found to have different precancerous lesions in the background. It was shown that among undifferentiated cancers the signs of chronic ulcer preceding cancer are noted more frequently than among adenocarcinomas. Grave forms of atrophic gastritis and gastritis of the mucous membrane regeneration beyond the
tumor
were revealed more frequently in adenocarcinomas than in undifferentiated cancers. These precancerous affections were found to be associated with the proliferation of different cell elements of gastric mucous membrane, that conditions various listogenesis of basic histological forms of cancer of the stomach. The proliferation of the lining-gastric pit epithelium, mainly observed in gastritis, results in the appearance of adenocarcinomas. The proliferation of the glandular epithelium, particularly that of glandular ducts in ulcerous disease would condition the development of undifferentiated forms of
gastric cancer

Cancer of gastric stump arising after gastric resection, performed for ulcerous disease, did not differ biologically from cancer of non-operated stomach, therefore it may be classified by the same principles as common
gastric cancer
. An analysis of 67 cases of primary cancer of the remaining gastric portion, the study of the
tumor
localization and spread indicated the possibility to classify the cancer according to the 4--stage system and TNN system.
