The World Vaccine Congress was held in Arlington, VA April 21st-24th, 2008. Tevi Troy, the deputy secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services, set the tone of the meeting during his keynote address. He discussed the government's plan to deliver a strategic outlook and follow a road map for vaccine development. He also emphasized the importance of ongoing cooperation between industry and the government's many departments. In an electrifying keynote address Gregory Poland, Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN discussed the role of recent advancements in the fields of Immunology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics and the completion of the Human Genome Project. Poland described the recent emergence of the field of Vaccinomics and laid out his vision for an era of personalized medicine. Next-generation vaccine approaches targeting cervical cancer, meningitis, childhood diarrhea and

were presented by leaders in the field. Preclinical and early-stage clinical successes of vaccines against
Malaria
, TB and Ebola were discussed along with a road map for HIV, TB and

vaccine development. The importance of collaborations among government departments, academic institutions, industries and philanthropic foundations was a common theme stressed throughout the conference.

mTOR inhibitors are used to treat metastatic renal cell cancer (
RCC
), but most patients eventually become resistant. One possible mechanism for resistance is upregulation of autophagy, a pathway that helps recycle intracellular proteins and promotes cell survival. Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), a potent autophagy inhibitor used to treat
malaria
and autoimmune disorders, is currently being studied in the context of cancer treatment. Here, we have investigated the effects of HCQ on three different
renal carcinoma
derived cell lines. We found that HCQ treatment inhibits
RCC
cell growth, promotes apoptosis, inhibits mitochondrial oxygen consumption, and increases rates of glycolysis. To understand the molecular mechanism behind these effects, we examined various nodes in the mTOR pathway and compared the effects of HCQ with the effects of the mTOR inhibitor RAD001. A key downstream readout of the pathway, phospho-S6 protein, was inhibited by both HCQ and RAD001. However, the upstream kinase, P70S6K was only inhibited by RAD001 and not HCQ, suggesting that the block by HCQ was downstream of P70S6K. Treatment with the proteasome inhibitor bortezomib restored phospho-S6 levels, suggesting that the reduction of phospho-S6 is caused by increased degradation of phospho-S6, but not total S6. Surprisingly, treatment with other autophagy inhibitors did not exhibit the same effects. Our findings suggest that HCQ causes the down-regulation of phospho-S6 in
RCC
cell lines via a novel mechanism that is not shared with other autophagy inhibitors.

) is a rare cause of renal hypertension and accounts for less than 0.3% of all childhood tumors. The clinical manifestation of hypertension in children requires a high index of suspicion, as does
RCC
, which can have many different manifestations. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 10-year-old girl with 1-year history of persistent symptoms of recurrent episodes of headache and excessive sweating and a 6-months history of weight loss and loss of appetite. She was repeatedly managed as having
malaria
in the center where she was referred, without recovery. Persistent high BP was discovered in our center, which ranged between 180/120 and 200/120 mmHg. This was not controlled by 3 different classes of drugs. Abdominal ultrasonography showed a right kidney with a well circumscribed lower pole mass with internal echoes, compressing the pelvicalyceal system. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a huge, circumscribed, expansile, isodense mass arising from the renal cortex in the lower pole of the right kidney. Intraoperative findings included a mass seen at the lower pole of the right kidney with histology diagnosis of
RCC
. Other laboratory tests were normal. To date, the patient remains normotensive and symptom-free after nephrectomy. CONCLUSIONS The nonspecific clinical manifestation found in this case show the need for hypertension screening in children. The resolution of symptoms after nephrectomy confirms
RCC
as the underlying cause of symptoms, making this case a unique presentation.

As a Traditional Chinese Medicine, Artemisia annua L. (A. annua) has been used for the treatment of various diseases since ancient times, including intermittent fevers due to
malaria
, bone steaming and heat/fever arising from exhaustion, tuberculosis, lice, wounds, scabies, dysentery et al. With the discovery of artemisinin and its excellent anti-malarial activity, A. annua has received great attention. Recently, A. annua has been revealed to show inhibitory effects against parasites (e.g. Plasmodium, Toxoplasma gondii, Leishmania, Acanthamoeba, Schistosoma), viruses (e.g. hepatitis A virus, herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2, human immunodeficiency virus), fungi (Candida, Malassezia, Saccharomyces spp.) and bacteria (Enterococcus, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Bacillus, Listeria, Haemophilus, Escherichia, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, Salmonella, Yersinia spp.). A. annua has also been reported to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer actions and been employed for the treatment of osteoarthritis, leukemia, colon cancer,
