The paper reviews existing reports on relations between pathologies leading to
malabsorption
and dental lesion in children. The following dental alterations are reported in the literature: delayed eruption of deciduous teeth, hypoplasia of enamel and
dental caries
. These lesions have been observed in gastrointestinal pathologies, for example, coeliac disease, chronic diarrhea and recurrent vomiting, intolerance of cow's milk protein, Crohn's disease and salmonellosis. The delayed eruption of deciduous teeth and hypoplasia of the enamel are certainly correlated to
malabsorption
and maldigestion, especially if these are protracted over time.
Dental caries
may be due to poor oral hygiene, poor diet and to the presence of modified calcification. Only a comparative study with a control group will enable the effective prevalence to be assessed.

may probably be the main cause of the condition, although neglect of oral hygiene during active phases of the disease might also be important. Increased attention has to be directed towards this problem. A strict oral hygiene should be recommended and the regular use of fluoride treatment appears to be justified in such a high risk group of patients.

The syndrome of nodular lymphoid hyperplasia of the small bowel with hypogammaglobulinemia is one of the hypogammaglobulinemic enteropathies. Chronic diarrhea and
malabsorption
are the most characteristic features of this disease, and they are frequently associated to hypogammaglobulinemia of various types (acquired, congenital non sex-linked) and to selective IgA deficiency. The immunological deficiency gives rise to the more characteristic features of the disease, namely: a) hypogammaglobulinemia; b) respiratory infections and

; c) Giardia lamblia infestation of the small bowel; d) the characteristic radiological features; and, e) the histological aspect of the intestinal mucosa with absence of plasma cells. Periodical follow-up is needed because of the increased incidence of tumors in immunological deficiency states. A new case of nodular lymphoid hyperplasia associated to hemolytic anemia and granulomatous hepatitis is reported, and its possible pathogenesis is discussed.

Fluid milk and several dairy products are an excellent medium to generate an array of products that fit into the current consumer demand for health-driven foods. Several technologies associated with culture addition, fermentation, or both are available for creating an assortment of flavors and textures in milk products. It appears that accentuating the positive attributes of inherent milk constituents, incorporating health-promoting cultures, and offering a variety of flavors and textures to the consumer could enhance milk consumption. Recent advances in probiotic research show much promise in new product development of functional foods based on milk. Several scientifically sound clinical studies have verified some of the anecdotal reports of the past. Among the reported beneficial effects of consuming certain strains of cultures, or their metabolites, or both are enhanced immune response, balancing of colonic microbiota, vaccine adjuvant effect, reduction of fecal enzymes implicated in cancer initiation, treatment of diarrhea associated with travel, antibiotic therapy, control of rotavirus and Clostridium difficile, control of ulcers related to Helicobacter pylori, reduction of serum cholesterol, antagonism against food-borne pathogens and
tooth decay
organisms, and amelioration of lactose

symptoms. The mode of action in most cases seems to involve modulation of ecosystem of the gastrointestinal tract of the host. Several strains belonging to genera Enterococcus, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium, which have desirable clinical benefits, are now available. They are being incorporated in yogurts, dairy snacks, breakfast foods, drinks, refrigerated desserts, cheeses, spreads, frozen desserts, and unfermented sweet cultured milk.

During research performed in humans of both sexes, aged 17-30, suffering from disorders of gall-bladder kinetics, we found a constant association between this disorder and a cervical syndrome with occipital cephalea, spasmophilia, pre-molar and molar dental decay, even to edentation. We believe the mechanism inducing those disorders originates in the
malabsorption
of vitamin D2, caused by the absence of biliary salts in the intestine. Our findings could be of interest for the therapeutic management of such cases. In conclusion, we describe a new clinical framework establishing a pathological pattern that is functionally and morphologically coherent. The pattern includes the motor-biliary condition that induces disorders in the mechanism of calcium metabolism control. It also includes major neuromuscle hyperexcitability in the pre-vertebral region associated with the biped posture. Functional and morphological lesions in the cervical region of the spine, with Arnold-type manifestations and spasmophilia prevail in the final clinical picture. This picture is very early associated with multiple
dental caries
that may progress to edentation. The clinical picture appears as a coherent pattern, from a clinical, morpho-functional and pathogenic perspective.

The following components of milk are of particular interest in the recent years: 1) Lactoferrin [Lf] has antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasite and antitumor activities and accelerates immunomodulatory properties. Lf is a potent inhibitor for several enveloped and naked viruses, such as rotavirus, enterovirus and adenovirus. Lf is resistant to tryptic digestion and breast-fed infants excrete high levels of faecal Lf, so that its effect on viruses replicating in the gastrointestinal tract is of great interest. 2) Casein has been protective in experimental bacteremia by eliciting myelopoiesis. Casein hydrolyzates were also protective in diabetic animals, reduced the tumor growth and diminished colicky symptoms in infants. 3) A Proline rich polypeptide [PRP] revealed variety of immunotropic functions, including promotion of T-cell activation and inhibition of autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis. 4) alpha-Lactalbumin [LA] demonstrates antiviral, antitumor and anti-stress properties. 5) Lactoperoxidase shows antibacterial properties. 6) Lysozyme is effective in treatment of periodentitis and prevention of

Although fructose was discovered in 1794, it was realised in recent decades only that its
malabsorption
can lead to intestinal symptoms while its excessive consumption induces metabolic disturbances. Fructose is a monosaccharide found naturally in most fruits and vegetables. Dietary intake of fructose has gradually increased in the past decades, especially because of the consumption of high fructose corn syrup. With its 16.4 kg/year consumption, Hungary ranks secondly after the United States. Fructose is absorbed in the small intestine by facilitated transport mediated by glucose transporter proteins-2 and -5, and arrives in the liver cells. Here it is transformed enzymatically into fructose-1-phosphate and then, fructose-1,5-diphosphate, which splits further into glyceraldehyde and dihydroxyacetone-phosphate, entering the process of glycolysis, triglyceride and uric acid production. The prevalence of fructose intolerance varies strongly, depending on the method used. The leading symptoms of fructose intolerance are similar, but less severe than those of lactose intolerance. Multiple secondary symptoms can also occur. A symptom-based diagnosis of fructose intolerance is possible, but the gold standard is the H
2
breath test, though this is less accurate than in lactose testing. Measuring fructosaemia is costly, cumbersome and not widely used. Fructose intolerance increases intestinal motility and sensitivity, promotes biofilm formation and contributes to the development of gastrooesophageal reflux. and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Its role in carcinogenesis is presently investigated.
