Colisa fasciatus, a freshwater teleost, were exposed for 90 hrs to 45 p.p.m. nickel sulphate under static test conditions. The treatment resulted in leucopenia due to reduction in the number of small lymphocytes and polycythemia with concomitant increases in the haematocrit and haemoglobin values, and in retardation of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate of the moribund fish. No differences in total thrombocyte count, clotting time, and hepatosomatic index were found between the control and the treated fish. Lymphopenia and erythrocytosis may be used in presumptive monitoring nickel toxicity in fish.

Hematological effects of tilorone, an interferon inducer, on the hematopoietic cell system of normal CBA/Ca mice and on the development of Friend virus (FV-P)-induced polycythemia in DBA/2 mice were studied. In normal mice 80 mg/kg IP had a marked depressive effect on pluripotent (CFU-s), granuloid committed (CFU-C), and erythroid committed (CFU-E) stem cells with regeneration between days 5 and 12. In bone marrow smears only lymphopenia was detected. Treatment of mice before FV-P infection caused a slight retardation in the development of the splenomegaly and the transformation of bone marrow cells to Ep independence. Repeated treatment after FV-P infection also reduced the increase in spleen weight and the development of reticulocytosis, but the Ep independence of bone marrow and spleen cells was not influenced. In vitro exposure of normal cells and cells from FV-P-infected animals to the drug showed the same sensitivity of colony growth in normal as well as in Ep-independent CFU-E. The action of the drug on Friend leukemia is at least in part considered a toxic effect on the hematopoietic stem cell system.

9-year-old castrated male Greyhound dog was presented for evaluation of vomiting and lethargy of 1-week duration. On physical examination, the dog was febrile and dehydrated with a tense abdomen and petechial hemorrhages. Clinicopathologic abnormalities included relative polycythemia, mild lymphopenia with reactive lymphocytes, hypoalbuminemia, hypocholesterolemia, hyperbilirubinemia, increased ALP, mild hypokalemia, hyperamylasemia, hyperlipasemia, increased D-dimer concentration, and hyperfibrinogenemia. Cytologic evaluation of peritoneal fluid revealed marked suppurative inflammation with intracellular barium sulfate particles. The day before presentation, the referring veterinarian had administered oral barium sulfate in an upper gastrointestinal contrast study. Radiographs revealed free contrast material in the peritoneal cavity, consistent with gastrointestinal perforation, and leakage of contrast material. Abdominal exploratory surgery revealed a mid-jejunal perforation and a hepatic nodule. Histopathologic diagnosis of the jejunal and liver lesions was T-cell lymphoma. The patient recovered well postoperatively and received chemotherapy for treatment of lymphoma. Most commercial barium sulfate preparations contain relatively uniform, weakly birefringent, pale yellow particles <1 microm in diameter. Because barium sulfate is found occasionally in clinical specimens, cytopathologists should be familiar with its cytologic appearance.

A 5-month-old, intact male ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented with apathy, tachypnea and exercise intolerance. On initial physical examination, tachypnea and cyanosis were the two primary clinical signs detected. The complete blood count also revealed a severe polycythemia, with lymphopenia, neutrophilia and eosinophilia. Further diagnostic imaging tests were performed. The thoracic radiographs revealed cardiomegaly and a diffuse alveolar pulmonary pattern. Consequently, an echocardiography was performed and showed an interventricular septal defect, pulmonic artery occlusion, overriding of the aorta and right ventricle hypertrophy. All abnormalities were compatible with a tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). As a treatment plan, a phlebotomy was performed and the ferret was posteriorly maintained with oxygen and fluid therapy. The following day, the hematocrit decreased 11% and the respiratory distress improved. Four days later, the ferret got clinically worse and was euthanized. A necropsy was performed and confirmed the presence of an extreme TOF with a diffused interstitial pneumonia secondary to Pneumocystis carinii. To the author's knowledge, this is the first report of an extreme tetralogy of Fallot with polycythemia in a ferret.
