Lymphocytopenia
and
depression
of natural killer cells have been observed in patients with adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) treated with glycerol trioleate and glycerol trierucate ('Lorenzo's oil'). To investigate possible alterations of cellular immunoreactivity, we measured lymphocyte proliferation in response to mitogens (PHA, Con A, PWM, OKT3) in 27 patients on treatment and in 14 patients without treatment. In patients on treatment, lymphocyte proliferation in response to the mitogens PHA and Con A was significantly higher than in patients without treatment. Lymphocyte proliferation in patients without treatment was comparable to that of normal control lymphocytes. Additionally, we found increased concentrations of erucic acid, C22:1, in lymphocytes from patients with treatment. The enhanced proliferation of lymphocytes in response to mitogens is an indication of increased reactivity of cellular immunity to unspecific immunological stimuli. Long-term side-effects on cellular immunoreactivity have to be considered in ALD patients treated with Lorenzo's oil.

Epidemiological evidence suggests that heavy acute or chronic exercise is related to an increased incidence of upper respiratory tract infections in athletes, while moderate exercise is believed to be protective. During the past years, many groups have investigated the association between changes within the immune system and exercise at different intensity levels. Although following strenuous exercise, some immunologic alterations were quite consistent and reproducible, e.g. neutrophilia,

of natural killer cell activity, some findings were divergent or strongly dependent on the study design and athletes investigated. Lately, interesting results in the field of psychoneuroimmunolgy as well as new insights in the relationship between macro- and micronutrient and the immune system have brought up new fields of research interest. There is growing evidence that e.g. lifestyle factors, the coping with daily stress, and dietary behavior are important cofactors in the immune response to exercise. The present work gives a short review on the literature dealing with URTI in athletes with special reference to the above mentioned cofactors. In addition, the results of a recent investigation concerning training and associated lifestyle patterns in German athletes are presented.

The majority of the patients had endotoxicosis, hypercoagulation and hyperlipidemia; the correction of it by hemosorption and plasmapheresis was performed depending on the disease stage. 90 patients underwent surgery. Reconstruction in aorto-ileo-femoral zone was performed in 57 patients (in 34--with good results), in femoro-popliteo-femoral zone--in 33 patients (in 19--with good results). The "Gore-Tex" grafts were the plastic material for reconstruction, but autovein in situ was also used in femoro-popliteal zone.

Infectious disease is a common complication of mild hypothermia therapy. However, very little has been reported about immune response during hypothermia. In the present study, the number and subset of peripheral lymphocytes and mitogen response to phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) and concanavalin A (Con-A) were examined in 14 patients who received mild hypothermia therapy. NK cell ratio and activity were also examined in the same patients. Six out of 14 patients had complicated infectious diseases during mild hypothermia therapy. Five of them had pneumonia and the remaining one had thrombophlebitis. The number of peripheral
lymphocytes decreased
in patients whose rectal temperature was less than 34.5 degrees C, whereas mitogen response of lymphocytes to PHA and Con-A remained unchanged in patients whose rectal temperature was above 34.0 degrees C. NK cell ratio and cytotoxicity decreased in patients whose rectal temperature was less than 34.5 degrees C, including infectious cases. These results suggested that, under hypothermia therapy, immune responses of the patients whose rectal temperature was less than 34.5 degrees C were disturbed because of the reduced number of peripheral lymphocytes and

Anaemia is a common complication of the HIV infection. To understand the mechanism of HIV associated anaemia and to suggest a consequent therapeutic approach in adults in Mali, we undertook a prospective case/control study in two services of reference with essentially adults recruitment in Bamako. We studied the frequency, the risk factors and the prognosis value of this complication in 133 patients with HIV infection matched to 133 others non HIV infected. The average age of our patients was 36.08 +/- 8.80 years (age range: 19 to 66 years). The frequency of anaemia was significantly higher in patients with HIV infection compared to the controls (78.9% vs. 51.9%; OR = 2.46; 95% CI [1.56-3.92]). Anaemia was more frequent in women than in men (p = 0.00003). A significant association between anaemia and thrombopenia or
lymphopenia
was observed only in patients with HIV infection. The severity of anemia was positively associated with the HIV2 infection and the progression of the HIV disease. Mortality was more frequently associated to the anaemia (p < 10(-5)) in patients infected by HIV. These findings suggest that bone marrow

leading to a decreased red blood cells production is the main mechanism of HIV associated anaemia in adult in Mali. Therefore, without evidence of a best cost-effectiveness ratio of a human recombinant erythropoietin treatment in the context of countries with a low income, the therapy of this haematological complication must be an emergency focusing on red blood cells transfusions.

Cortisone acetate, hydrocortisone, and hydrocortisone acetate depress the resistance of mice to pneumococcal and influenza viral infections, although hydrocortisone acetate is somewhat less effective than the free alcohol, when given subcutaneously. Pituitary adrenocorticotropin, even in highly purified form and in oil and beeswax, does not significantly alter the resistance of mice to these experimental infections, even when given in doses which may cause profound eosinopenia,
lymphopenia
, and weight loss, and which are at the limit of tolerance of the animals. Corticosterone depresses resistance to pneumococcal infections significantly, but fails to alter resistance to influenza viral infections. The findings suggest that murine adrenals may produce one of the known adrenal steroids such as corticosterone along with another steroid, or may produce a steroid other than cortisone, hydrocortisone, or corticosterone. When resistance is decreased by adrenal steroids, survival time is invariably shortened, and the effect of the steroid hormones is frequently demonstrable within the 1st day after infection with pneumococci, making it unlikely that the
depression
of resistance that is seen is primarily due to
depression
of antibody formation. A single dose of 5 mg. of cortisone may cause
depression
of resistance and may decrease the survival time for 3 to 6 days afterward. Growth hormone (somatotropic hormone) in highly purified form, and in the doses used, did not overcome the weight loss induced by cortisone, but the animals treated with growth hormone and cortisone regained their lost weight more rapidly than those receiving cortisone alone. Growth hormone alone caused a slight increase in the rate of gain in weight over controls. Growth hormone alone did not increase resistance to infection, and did not increase the survival time, in mice infected with either pneumococci or influenza virus. Growth hormone in various dosages failed to overcome the effect of cortisone in depressing resistance to these infections. Cortisone, hydrocortisone, corticosterone, and corticotropin did not alter significantly the titers of influenza virus attained in the murine lungs during the first 2 days after infection, but cortisone and hydrocortisone markedly delayed the rate at which virus titers declined during the subsequent 6 days. Corticosterone and corticotropin delayed the rate at which the titers declined but slightly, and growth hormone had no apparent effect, as compared with controls. Growth hormone did not overcome the effect of cortisone and hydrocortisone on viral titers. No detectable antibody was found as late as 6 days after infection, in controls or in hormone-treated animals.

, which became progressively less marked with continued treatment, and clear-cut depletion of small lymphocytes in lymph nodes, whether draining an inoculation site or remote. In guinea pigs treated with lymphocyte antiserum, there was marked suppression of the tuberculin and contact allergic reactions and the "delayed" skin reaction to purified diphtheria toxoid, and a relative suppression of allergic encephalomyelitis and the rejection of first set skin homografts. There was a slight effect on second set graft rejection and no effect on PCA or the reversed passive Arthus reaction. Non-specific reactions to intradermal turpentine or to concentrated dinitrochlorobenzene placed on the skin were moderately reduced. The suppression of these reactions (except allergic encephalomyelitis) was closely correlated with the degree of
lymphopenia
. Lymphocyte antiserum absorbed with normal blood white cells lost both its lymphopenic effect and its ability to suppress the tuberculin reaction. It is tentatively concluded that a circulating mononuclear cell, probably the small lymphocyte, is the primary reactant in the various types of delayed hypersensitive reactions.

The aim of this paper was to compare the effect of flumethasone and meloxicam in combination with oxytetracycline on clinical and immunological parameters of calves suffering from enzootic bronchopneumonia. The study was performed on 30 Black-and-White Lowland Breed calves with clinical signs of enzootic bronchopneumonia divided randomly into three equal groups and, respectively, treated with-Group I: oxytetracycline and meloxicam; Group II: oxytetracycline and flumethasone; Group III (control): oxytetracycline only. Treatment of calves with the combination of oxytetracycline and meloxicam (Group I) caused a significantly faster, in comparison to other groups, improvement in the clinical illness index score (CIIS: cough, nasal discharge, dyspnea,

and anorexia) and a faster normalization of body temperature. A slow decrease in white blood cell (WBC) count, the number of neutrophils, MID (mixed number of monocytes, eosinophils and basophils) and in the individual number of monocytes (CD14/CD45 positive cells) was observed in Groups I and III. Both drugs, flumethasone and meloxicam slightly decreased tumor necrosis factor (TNF) but meloxicam slightly increased the levels of interferon (IFN) in sera and in bronchoalveolar lavages (BALs). These results suggest that the combination of meloxicam with an antibiotic in calves suffering from enzootic bronchopneumonia is superior to the antibiotic alone and also to the combination of the antibiotic with flumethasone.

Clinico-haematological and mineral studies were carried out in experimental chickens given maduramicin medicated feed at 5 and 10 ppm for 21 days. Maduramicin medication in both medicated groups caused growth retardation. Clinical signs namely watery diarrhoea,
depression
, dullness and ruffled feathers were noticed in chickens from second week of the medication at 10 ppm but this effect was seen from third week in the birds given maduramicin at 5 ppm. Maduramicin medication caused significant reduction in haemoglobin in both the medicated group from day 14 and total erythrocyte count and packed cell volume in 10 ppm group on day 21. There was an increase in MCV in 10 ppm group on day 21 indicating macrocytic anaemia and decrease in mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) in both the medicated groups indicating hypochromic anaemia. The leucopenia due to

was observed in 10 ppm group on day 21. Maduramicin medication caused significant increase in serum Zn in 10 ppm group and decrease in Cu concentration in both the medicated groups from day 14. It is concluded that maduramicin caused toxic effects from day 14 in both the medicated groups.

Individual variability in the central control of the cellular immune responses is the main subject of the study. Previously, it was found that destruction of the lateral hypothalamus (LH) produced long-term
depression
of the cytotoxicity of NK cells (NKCC) and their number (LGL). In the present experiment we compared changes in the peripheral blood NKCC, LGL number, as well as leukocyte and lymphocyte number, their mitogenic activity and plasma corticosterone level evoked by electrolytic LH lesions in rats which were categorized as either high (HR) and low (LR) responders according to their locomotor response to a new environment. It was found that: (1) before the lesion NKCC (measured by 51Cr release assay) was higher in the HRs than in LRs; (2) LH damage caused a drop in NKCC and LGL number (21st postlesion day) preceded by a transient enhancement (5th postlesion day) significant for HRs only. As a result of a greater decrease in the HRs than LRs the baseline differences between groups disappeared by 21st postlesion day; (3) NKCC and LGL
depression
was not accompanied by changes in lytic activity of a single NK cell (agarose assay) which indicates that NKCC decrease concerned the population level and was dependent on LGL redistribution and/or recycling rate; (4) on the 21st postlesion day there was a significant leuko- and
lymphopenia
in the lesioned groups both HRs and LRs; (5) proliferative lymphocyte response to PWM (colorimetric assay) and plasma corticosterone level were not affected either by the motility level or by the lesion. The results emphasize the importance of individual differences in behavioral reactivity for NKCC regulation and a possible involvement of LH in the mechanism which connects high locomotor activity with stimulation of NKCC.
