Low pH eluates were prepared from trophoblasts derived from 8 term human placentas. A qualitative analysis for immunoglobulins revealed the presence of IgG,
IgA
, and IgM in these eluates. IgC-rich fractions were obtained by DEAE-cellulose chromatography of ammonium sulfate-concentrated eluates. These fractions were able to neutralize, in vitro, the catalytic activity of reverse transcriptases (RT) from several retroviruses. RT from baboon endogenous virus (BEV) seemed to be more susceptible to the neutralizing activity of some eluates. This was in contrast to RT from feline leukemia virus (FeLV) which were neutralized by eluates of leukocytes from
chronic myelogenous leukemia
. In contrast to previous and present results with purified IgG from leukemic leukocytes, the purified IgG from placenta eluates was incapable of RT neutralization. However, such purified IgG fractions inhibited mixed lymphocyte reactions.

A patient with
chronic granulocytic leukemia
, neutrophilic type, was followed for 28 months. A paraproteinemia,
IgA
type K, and Bence Jones proteinuria (K) appeared without prior chemotherapy with alkylating agents.

The serum immunoglobulin levels were studied in 25 healthy control subjects and 23 cases of leukaemia (6 cases of acute lymphatic leukaemia, 5 cases of acute myeloid leukaemia, 2 cases of chronic lymphatic leukaemia and 10 cases of
chronic myeloid leukaemia
) and 17 cases of malignant lymphoma (13 cases of Hodgkin's lymphoma and 4 cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma). The mean levels of IgG,
IgA
and IgM in 25 control subjects were 1573.56 +/- 91.45 mg/dl, 209.64 +/- 12.55 mg/dl and 109.81 +/- 10.03 mg/dl respectively, those in 23 cases of leukaemia were 1338.23 +/- 109.74 mg/dl, 195.53 +/- 20.72 mg/dl and 127.47 +/- 13.29 mg/dl respectively and those in 17 cases of malignant lymphoma were 996.99 +/- 99.50 mg/dl, 147.47 +/- 19.61 mg/dl and 129.35 +/- 19.95 mg/dl respectively. The mean levels of IgG and
IgA
were found to be decreased in cases of leukaemia with elevated levels of IgM, however, it was found to be insignificant (p less than 0.4). The mean IgG,
IgA
and IgM levels were found to be almost identical in different leukaemia irrespective of cytological types except in 2 cases of chronic lymphatic leukaemia which showed low levels of IgG and
IgA
. The mean levels of IgG and
IgA
were found to be significantly decreased in malignant lymphoma (p less than 0.02). IgM levels were found to be increased in 3 cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

A patient, with
chronic myeloid leukemia
and
IgA
monoclonal gammopathy, who contemporaneously developed myeloid blast crisis and immunoblastic lymphoma is reported. Cytogenetic studies showed complex chromosome abnormalities concerning chromosomes 8, 14 and 22, other than the Ph chromosome. A possible relationship between the emergence of immunoblasts from slow proliferating lymphoplasmacytoid cells, myeloid blasts crisis and chromosomal changes is discussed.

The incidence of monoclonal gammopathy in 61 patients with chronic myeloproliferative disorders (CMPD) was studied. The distribution of patients among the CMPD subgroups was:
chronic myelocytic leukemia
, 24 patients; myelofibrosis, 11; polycythemia vera, 15; essential thrombocythemia, 7; unclassified MPD, 4 patients. Monoclonal gammopathy was found in 5 patients (8.2%). Two of these patients (1
IgA
/k and 1 IgM/k) had myelofibrosis and 3 (2 IgG/k and 1 IgG/lambda) polycythemia vera. The presence of monoclonal gammopathy indicates an involvement of the lymphoplasmatic system in CMPD.

For 147 patients with myeloproliferative diseases, a study was made of the expression of Fc-receptors to immunoglobulins IgC,
IgA
, and that of FcH-receptor and receptors to C3-components of the complement in peripheral blood neutrophils. The data obtained show the lower level of neutrophils having membrane receptors in patients with acute myeloblastic leukemia and
chronic granulocytic leukemia
at the stage of blast transformation. A decrease in expression of membrane receptors of neutrophils was shown in patients with
chronic granulocytic leukemia
and benign subleukemic myelosis. The finding of a higher level of neutrophils having surface receptors revealed in patients with real polycythemia is close to the data obtained in the study of expression of membrane receptors in patients with chronic myeloproliferative diseases and healthy persons.

The expression of Fc-receptors to immunoglobulins IgG,
IgA
, IgM, that of FcH-receptor and receptors to C3-components of the complement in peripheral blood blast cells were studied in 11 patients with acute myeloblast leukosis and 10 patients with
chronic granulocytic leukemia
at the stage of blast transformation. The data obtained show the lower level of differentiation and functional activity of blast cells in patients with acute myeloblast leukemia while in
chronic granulocytic leukemia
a degree of expression of surface receptor on myeloblasts is close to the data obtained in the study of membrane receptors on promyelocytes and myelocytes of healthy persons.

A human hematopoietic cell line (K-23-M) was established from a patient with
chronic myelocytic leukemia
in blast crisis. Morphologically, the cultured cells were lymphoblastoid cells that produced
IgA
and were Epstein-Barr viral nuclear antigen positive. But they showed high phagocytic activity to glutaraldehyde-treated sheep red cells and had properties of a monocyte or macrophage that included surface Fc receptors, alpha-naphthyl butyrate esterase positivity blocked by NaF, migration in soft agar and the ability to attach to a glass surface. Lysozyme secretion was absent, and chromosomes were diploid and Ph1 negative. This cell line is unique in that it has strong phagocytic activity. Its existence shows that lymphoblastoid cell line may be a more important cell line for the study of human hematopoietic cells than previously has been believed.

By means of the cytotoxic and immunofluorescence tests, frequency of various classes of immunoglobulins (IgG,
IgA
, IgM, IgD, IgE) and light chains was examined in peripheral pathologic blood cells of patients with chronic granulocytic and lymphatic leukemia. The dominant immunoglobulins were of the IgD and IgE classes. Light chains of both types were present in cells of
chronic granulocytic leukemia
, and kappa type in chronic lymphatic leukemia. Use of the method of resynthesis of digested immunoglobulins in vitro confirmed the monoclonal origin of chronic lymphatic leukemia in humans.

The coexistence of Philadelphia negative
chronic granulocytic leukemia
(

IgA
monoclonal gammopathy is reported in a patient. The possible relation between the two proliferative processes is discussed in the light of current knowledge on the pluripotent stem cell and the clonal origin of
