An unusually high incidence of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and
chronic myeloid leukemia
(
CML
) concentrated in a specific locality of a region in Germany motivated a descriptive incidence study in that region which showed a near 10-fold increased risk of
CML
among males but not among females (Kolb G, Becker N, Scheller S, Zugmaier G, Pralle H, Wahrendorf J, Havemann K. Increased risk of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and
chronic myelogenous leukemia
(
CML
) in a County of Hesse, Germany, Soc Prev Med 1993;38:190-195). Since a serious environmental contamination of areas in this locality with armament wastes containing
toluene
-derivatives has been known for a long time, the hypothesis arose that TNT production and the related severe contamination of soil and water might be responsible for the observed higher risk. We carried out a case-control study within the cluster to test this hypothesis. Overall, the results do not confirm the hypothesis. There is an indication of a relationship of an increased odds ratio with the exposure for a small group of persons who lived at a particular site in one of the two communities involved during the peak phase of TNT production during the 1940s. However, this finding is spurious and cannot explain the large majority of cases which occurred in that area in the 1980s. At the moment, no other explanation can be given for the increased risk of leukemias in that area.

The reactions of 21-hydroxyprogesterone with Lawesson's reagent in
toluene
or [Formula: see text] gave four P-heterocyclic androst-4-ene derivatives (two tautomeric pairs): 4-(3-thioxoandrost-4-en-17[Formula: see text]-yl)-1,3,2-oxathiaphosphole-2- sulfide (2), 4-(3-thioxoandrost-4-en-17[Formula: see text]-ylidene)-1,3,2-oxathiaphospholane-2-sulfide (3), 4-(3-oxoandrost-4-en-17[Formula: see text]-yl)-1,3,2-oxathiaphosphole-2-sulfide (4), and 4-(3-oxoandrost-4-en-17[Formula: see text]-ylidene)-1,3,2- oxathiaphospholane-2-sulfide (5). The structures of all novel 17-substituted steroids were elucidated from their analytic and spectral data (HRMS, IR, 1D NMR and 2D NMR-HSQC, HMBC, NOESY, COSY). The detailed NMR analysis for all compounds revealed the presence of two pairs of signals in approx. 8:2 ratio indicating the existence of two diastereoisomers (a and b) with different configurations at the phosphorus atom. A parallel analysis of heteronuclear 2D [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] spectra (HSQC and HMBC) and homonuclear 2D spectra (NOESY and COSY) enabled complete [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] assignments of each isomer and provided evidence for the preferred configuration on phosphorus atom. Cytotoxic activity in vitro was tested against four tumor cell lines (human cervix carcinoma HeLa cells,
chronic myelogenous leukemia
K-562 and two human breast carcinoma MDA-MB-361 and MDA-MB-453 cells). Compounds 3a,b and 4a,b showed a poor activity against HeLa and MDA-MB-453 cell lines, while against MDA-MB-361 cell line, all tested compounds exerted very weak cytotoxic effect. All compounds exerted moderate activity against K562 cells. Antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and fungal cells, and toxicity to brine shrimp Artemia salina were evaluated. All tested compounds showed strong antifungal activity.

The addition of 2-bromobenzylmagnesium bromide to chiral N- tert-butanesulfinyl imines derived from tetralone-type ketones proceeds with high levels of diastereocontrol. The resulting sulfinamide derivatives were transformed into dibenzoazaspiro compounds after a palladium-catalyzed intramolecular N-arylation. DFT calculations have been performed to rationalize the stereochemical course of the reaction. Similar results have been obtained considering either diethyl ether or
toluene
as a solvent, in both cases in an excellent agreement with experimental findings. NCI topological calculations have also been used to evidence crucial noncovalent interactions. In addition, the azaspiro compounds reduced the viability of
chronic myeloid leukemia
cells in the micromolar range. Notably, both the halogen-substituted ( R)- and ( S)-8g and -8h as well as ( R)-8j were at least two times more effective on a multidrug-resistant derivative than on the parental cell line, exerting a collateral sensitivity effect.

With the rapid development of plastic runways in China, incidents of toxic runways that are detrimental to human health frequently occurred. This phenomenon has resulted in public concern on the safety and cleanliness of plastic runways. To improve the sustainability of these runways, the environmental performance of the produced plastic runways should be evaluated. The critical hotspots for plastic runway studies should be determined, and a cleaner optimization path of critical materials should be explored. In this study, a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) on the air-permeable plastic runway was conducted. The green factory formula was identified, and the environmental impacts of the production process were quantitatively analyzed. Detailed life cycle inventory data were obtained from the on-site survey of typical plastic runway manufacturer enterprises in China. Environmental impacts were calculated using the
CML
2001 method built into the GaBi 8.0 software. Results indicated that the 1: 7 ratio of polyurethane adhesive to ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber particles was the greenest formula with the least environmental impact. The environmental hotspots were from the front-end of raw material production during the mixing phase and the biomass steam input during the curing phase. The characteristic pollutants generated from mixing phase were CO
2
, methane, NO
x
, and VOCs, whereas those from the curing phase were CO
2
, NO
x
, SO

, freon, HCl, and NH

. Moreover, methylene diisocyanate (MDI) was the cleaner raw material for air-permeable plastic runway production, because the environmental impact of producing an equal mass of MDI was 39%-89% of that by
toluene
diisocyanate. Thus, this LCA study presents a strategy for the sustainable improvement of air-permeable plastic runway production and also proposes policy recommendations for decision makers.
