Cutaneous hypersensitivity to vitamin K1 injection has been reported once in North America. This case and most of the others in European literature have been associated with alcoholic liver disease. We report six patients who developed persistent skin hypersensitivity reactions at the site of vitamin K1 injection. These cases are the first reported to occur in liver disease associated with primary biliary cirrhosis,
chronic myeloid leukemia
, amyloidosis, and
preeclampsia
. Patch and intradermal skin tests demonstrated a hypersensitivity that seems to have an immune basis and is restricted to fat-soluble vitamin K1. This finding suggests that patients with any type of liver disease may be at risk for vitamin K hypersensitivity and that the hypersensitivity may be a marker of liver disease.

Thermally processed food contains advanced glycation end products (AGEs) including N(epsilon)-(carboxymethyl)lysine (
CML
). Higher AGEs or circulating
CML
were shown to be associated with pregnancy complications such as
preeclampsia
and gestational diabetes. It is unclear whether this association is causal. The aim of our study was to analyze the effects of dietary
CML
and
CML
-containing thermally processed food on metabolism in pregnant rats. Animals were fed with standard or with AGE-rich diet from gestation day 1. Third group received standard diet and
CML
via gavage. On gestation day 18, blood pressure was measured, urine and blood were collected and the oral glucose tolerance test was performed. Plasma AGEs were slightly higher in pregnant rats fed with the AGE-rich diet (p=0.09). A non-significant trend towards higher
CML
in plasma was found in the
CML
group (p=0.06). No significant differences between groups were revealed in glucose metabolism or markers of renal functions like proteinuria and creatinine clearance. In conclusion, this study does not support the hypothesis that dietary AGEs such as
CML
might induce harmful metabolic changes or contribute to the pathogenesis of pregnancy complications. The short duration of the rodent gestation warrants further studies analyzing long-term effects of AGEs/
CML
in preconception nutrition.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs), which act as initiators and promoters of various diseases, were thought to be mostly noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) in eukaryotes, until recent studies confirmed that some circRNAs have the function of encoding proteins. Accumulating research findings have proved that dysregulation of circRNAs is associated with the developmental process of multiple cancers. circHIPK3, an example of circRNA, is frequently expressed in many diseases, such as diabetes, age-related cataract, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis,
preeclampsia
, osteoblasts, and retinal vascular dysfunction, leading to disease development and progression. In addition, circHIPK3 may also serve as a potential biomarker, to help us know more about the rules of occurrence and development of cancers. In recent studies, many circHIPK3-related cancers have been identified, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma, gallbladder cancer, lung cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, osteosarcoma, glioma, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, gastric cancer, oral squamous cell carcinoma, and
chronic myeloid leukemia
. This review summarizes recent studies on the biological mechanisms of circHIPK3 and expounds the molecular mechanisms of circHIPK3 in these malignant tumors.
