Acute and chronic alcohol abuse impairs various functions of the immune system and thus, has been implicated as a cofactor in the immunopathogenesis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease progression. We determined whether naltrexone, an opioid receptor antagonist widely used in the treatment of alcoholism, inhibits alcohol-mediated enhancement of HIV infection of T cells. Alcohol enhanced HIV infection of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) and a human lymphoid cell line (CEMX174). Alcohol increased HIV X4 envelope (Env), not murine
leukemia
virus Env-pseudotyped infection of CEMX174 cells. Naltrexone antagonized the enhancing effect of alcohol on HIV infection of PBL and CEMX174 cells. The specific mu-opioid receptor antagonist, Cys2, Tyr3, Arg5, Pen7 (CTAP) amide, also blocked the enhancing effect of alcohol on HIV infection. Investigation of the underlying mechanism for the alcohol action showed that alcohol significantly increased endogenous
beta-endorphin
production and induced mu-opioid receptor mRNA expression in PBL and CEMX174 cells. The role of
beta-endorphin
in alcohol-mediated enhancement of HIV infection was indicated by the observations that naltrexone and CTAP antagonized ether alcohol- or exogenous
beta-endorphin
-mediated enhancement of HIV infection. These findings suggest a biological mechanism for the potential therapeutic benefit of naltrexone in treating HIV-infected alcoholics.

The accident at the Chernobyl
NPP
in 1986 was the most severe in the history of the nuclear industry, causing a huge release of radionuclides over large areas of Europe. The recently completed Chernobyl Forum concluded that after a number of years, along with reduction of radiation levels and accumulation of humanitarian consequences, severe social and economic depression of the affected regions and associated psychological problems of the general public and the workers had become the most significant problem to be addressed by the authorities. The majority of the affected land is now safe for life and economic activities. However, in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and in some limited areas of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine some restrictions on land-use should be retained for decades to come. Most of the 600,000 emergency and recovery operation workers and five million residents of the contaminated areas in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine received relatively minor radiation doses which are comparable with the natural background levels. Apart from the dramatic increase in thyroid cancer incidence among those exposed at a young age and some increase of
leukaemia
and solid cancer in most exposed workers, there is no clearly demonstrated increase in the somatic diseases due to radiation.

The results of immunophenotyping investigations of periferal blood granulocyte and lymphocyte population, number of p53+ and Bcl-2+ in 57 patients (among them 18 persons suffered after the Chernobyl
NPP
accident) with chronic phase of chronic myelogenic
leukemia
were presented in the article. The reduction of CD34+ granulocytes number, normalization of CD95 cells, negative correlation between the number of CD95 and p53, Bcl-2 granulocytes in Imatinib treated patients in comparison with a control group was determined. The results of the investigation confirmed the efficiency of using BCR/ABL tyrosin kinase inhibitor Imatinib in the treatment of chronic phase of CML.

We recently discovered an unexpected phenomenon of somatic cell reprogramming into pluripotent cells by exposure to sublethal stimuli, which we call stimulus-triggered acquisition of pluripotency (STAP). This reprogramming does not require nuclear transfer or genetic manipulation. Here we report that reprogrammed STAP cells, unlike embryonic stem (ES) cells, can contribute to both embryonic and placental tissues, as seen in a blastocyst injection assay. Mouse STAP cells lose the ability to contribute to the placenta as well as trophoblast marker expression on converting into ES-like stem cells by treatment with
adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
and
leukaemia
inhibitory factor (LIF). In contrast, when cultured with Fgf4, STAP cells give rise to proliferative stem cells with enhanced trophoblastic characteristics. Notably, unlike conventional trophoblast stem cells, the Fgf4-induced stem cells from STAP cells contribute to both embryonic and placental tissues in vivo and transform into ES-like cells when cultured with LIF-containing medium. Taken together, the developmental potential of STAP cells, shown by chimaera formation and in vitro cell conversion, indicates that they represent a unique state of pluripotency.

We present a rare case of primary pituitary T cell lymphoma/
leukemia
(T-LBL) in association with
adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) expressing pituitary adenoma in a 55-year-old woman highlighting the importance of intra-operative squash smears examination. The patient presented with complaints of headache, diminution of vision and recent onset altered sensorium. MRI revealed a mass lesion in the sellar-suprasellar region with non-visualization of pituitary gland separately, extending to involve adjacent structures diagnosed as invasive pituitary macroadenoma. Intra-operative tissue was sent for squash smear examination. The cytology showed a tumor comprising of sheets of immature lymphoid cells intermixed with clusters of pituitary acinar cells with many mitoses and tingible body macrophages. A diagnosis of presence of immature lymphoid cells within the pituitary was offered and differentials of infiltration by lymphoma cells from systemic disease versus primary central nervous lymphoma-like lymphoma arising in the pituitary adenoma were considered. Later paraffin section examination and immunohistochemistry corroborated with the squash findings and a final diagnosis of primary pituitary T cell lymphoma/
leukemia
in association with ACTH and TSH expressing pituitary adenoma was made. To date, only six cases of primary pituitary T cell lymphomas, including three T-LBL cases, have been reported. This is the seventh case and first one additionally describing cytohistological correlation and importance of intra-operative cytology.
