Three children with
leukaemia
(one with acute myeloid, two with acute lymphoblastic
leukaemia
) developed pneumatosis intestinalis during cytostatic treatment. The aetiology of pneumatosis intestinalis in these children could not be elucidated.
Pneumatosis intestinalis
may be caused by entry of gas into a bowel wall which is altered by steroid or cytostatic treatment. Otherwise, anaerobic bacteria may produce gas in the intestinal walls, therefore we treated all children with metronidazole.

Detection of free abdominal air requires in most cases immediate surgical intervention. However, there may be situations, where invasive procedures are not indicated. We present a case of asymptomatic pneumatosis intestinalis and free abdominal air in a patient with Aids.
Pneumatosis intestinalis
is a rare entity with accumulation of subserosal or submucosal gas occurring in the small or large bowel. It has been reported in a variety of gastrointestinal disorders, in Aids, after transplantation, with steroid use, and in association with
leukemia
, lymphoma, vasculitis, collagen vascular disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Pneumatosis intestinalis
has been described in association with many gastrointestinal tract disorders including infection, ischemia and obstruction. It has also been described in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, connective tissue disorders, organ transplantation,
leukemia
and various states of immunodeficiency. In the present paper, the case of a 66-year-old woman with chronic bronchiectasis who subsequently developed pneumatosis intestinalis is described.

Pneumatosis intestinalis
(PI) is a very rare condition that is defined as the presence of gas within the subserosal or submucosal layer of the bowel. PI has been described in association with a variety of conditions including gastrointestinal tract disorders, pulmonary diseases, connective tissue disorders, organ transplantation,
leukemia
, and various immunodeficiency states. We report a rare case of a 74-year-old woman who complained of dyspnea during the management of acute asthma exacerbation and developed PI; but, it improved without any treatment.
