A 73-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of progressive
lethargy
and fever. He had a history of hypertension since the age of 40, and was diagnosed as having a testicular tumor at the age of 50. On admission, he looked pale and

. Laboratory examination revealed microscopic hematuria. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate was 110 mm/hr, and the serum CRP was 14.3 mg/dl. The titer of
myeloperoxidase
-antineutrophilic cytoplasmic antibodies (MPO-ANCA) was higher than 1:1000. On the sixth hospital day, he required ventilatory assistance because of aspiration pneumonia and was connected to a respirator. He was treated with intravenous corticosteroids, to which he responded in the short term with resolution of the fever and decrease in the serum CRP level, however, the consciousness disturbance persisted and the fever recurred soon thereafter. He developed gross hematuria and the renal function deteriorated. He eventually died of renal failure and pulmonary hemorrhage. Although his clinical course and laboratory findings were consistent with those of microscopic polyangitis, the pathological diagnosis was crescentic glomerulonephritis with no evidence of vasculitis.

An 18-year-old female alpaca was presented to the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for chronic ill thrift over a 1-year period. Six weeks previously, an infected left mandibular cheek tooth was removed by oral extraction. On physical examination the patient was cachectic,
lethargic
, and weak. Abnormalities on the CBC included neutropenia, thrombocytosis, and severe nonregenerative, macrocytic, hypochromic anemia. Dysplastic nucleated erythrocytes and micromegakaryocytes were observed on the peripheral blood smear. Neutrophils, bands, and metamyelocytes appeared markedly toxic. Numerous blasts containing variable numbers of fine azurophilic granules were also observed. Based on their morphology, the cells were interpreted to be progranulocytes and myeloblasts, and a presumptive diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) was made. The blast cells accounted for 60% of the nucleated cell population on bone marrow aspirates, further supporting a diagnosis of AML with multilineage dysplasia. Post mortem examination showed infiltration of the neoplastic cells into spleen, liver, kidney, and lymph nodes. Based on histologic findings, the morphologic diagnoses were disseminated myeloid neoplasia, chronic regionally extensive tooth root abscess, and membranous glomerulonephritis. The neoplastic cells were CD172a-positive on flow cytometry, chloroacetate esterase-positive by cytochemistry, and
myeloperoxidase
-positive by immunohistochemistry, confirming myeloid origin. To our knowledge, this is the first case of AML with multilineage dysplasia in an alpaca, with only one other case of myelodysplasia described previously in this species.

We previously reported that mice deficient in two Se-dependent glutathione peroxidases, GPx1 and GPx2, have spontaneous ileocolitis. Disease severity depends on mouse genetic background. Whereas C57BL/6J (B6) GPx1/2-double-knockout (DKO) mice have moderate ileitis and mild colitis, 129S1Svlm/J (129) DKO mice have severe ileocolitis. Because GPx's are antioxidant enzymes, we hypothesized that elevated reactive oxygen species trigger inflammation in these DKO mice. To test whether NADPH oxidase 1 (Nox1) contributes to colitis, we generated B6 triple-KO (TKO) mice to study their phenotype. Because the Nox1 gene is X-linked, we analyzed the effects of Nox1 on male B6 TKO mice and female B6 DKO mice with the Nox1(+/-) (het-TKO) genotype. We found that the male TKO and female het-TKO mice are virtually disease-free when monitored from 8 through 50 days of age. Male TKO and female het-TKO mice have nearly no signs of disease (e.g.,

and perianal alopecia) that are often exhibited in the DKO mice; further, the slower growth rate of DKO mice is almost completely eliminated in male TKO and female het-TKO mice. Male TKO and female het-TKO mice no longer have the shortened small intestine present in the DKO mice. , are all significantly decreased in male TKO mice. The attenuated ileal and colonic pathology is also evident in female het-DKO mice. Furthermore, the male DKO ileum has eightfold higher TNF cytokine levels than TKO ileum. Nox1 mRNA is highly elevated in both B6 and 129 DKO ileum compared to wild-type mouse ileum. Taking these results together, we propose that ileocolitis in the DKO mice is caused by Nox1, which is induced by TNF. The milder disease in female het-TKO intestine is probably due to random or imprinted X-chromosome inactivation, which produces mosaic Nox1 expression.

A 37-yr-old captive common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) developed
lethargy
and decline in mobility that progressed to death, despite supportive therapy. Histopathologic examination revealed severe, diffuse, intravascular and interstitial infiltration of neoplastic histiocytes in the spleen, liver, lymph nodes, lungs, large intestine, kidneys, and thyroid gland. Neoplastic cells were pleomorphic with marked anisocytosis and anisokaryosis, scattered multinucleated giant cells, numerous bizarre mitotic figures, and marked erythrophagocytosis. CD71 is an immunohistochemical marker used in diagnosing acute myeloid leukemia (AML) M6-Er in humans; however, to our knowledge, it has not been reportedly used for immunohistochemistry in veterinary medicine. We evaluated the pathologic features of AML M6-Er in a retrovirus-negative cat and used CD71 to support the diagnosis. A 4-y-old spayed female Scottish Fold cat was presented with

, anorexia, and fever. Whole-blood PCR assay results for pro feline leukemia virus/pro feline immunodeficiency virus and feline vector-borne diseases were negative. Early erythroid precursors were observed in the peripheral blood smear. Fine-needle aspiration of the enlarged spleen and splenic lymph node showed many early erythroid precursors. Bone marrow aspirate smears revealed erythroid hyperplasia with 68.4% erythroid lineage and 3.6% rubriblasts. Dysplastic cells infiltrated other organs. The patient was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, progressing to the early phase of AML M6-Er. The patient died on day 121 despite multidrug treatments. Postmortem examination revealed neoplastic erythroblasts infiltrating the bone marrow and other organs. Neoplastic cells were immunopositive for CD71 but immunonegative for CD3, CD20, granzyme B, von Willebrand factor, CD61,
myeloperoxidase
, and Iba-1. Although further studies are necessary for the application of CD71, our results supported the morphologic diagnosis of AML M6-Er.
