The potential toxicity of FE-S15 (B. Braun-Melsungen), a soybean-oil fat emulsion used in parenteral nutrition, was studied in dogs. Forty pure-bred beagles, in two experimental groups (FE-S15 at 9 and 4 g/kg/day) and two corresponding control groups (receiving Dextrose-
Ringer's solution
), were given daily infusions for 28 days via a central venous catheter. Vital signs and hematologic, biochemical, and bacteriologic changes were monitored closely. When compared with control groups, no significant weight loss was observed in either group; the food intake decreased only in animals receiving fat in high doses. Hemoglobin and hematocrit decreased in all groups during infusion, the greatest fall observed in the group receiving high-dose fat infusion where the hematocrit declined from 45.5% to 31.7%. This decrease was significantly different from the controls only during one observation period. Clinical signs, such as
lethargy
, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and fever were observed infrequently in both experimental and control animals, more often in those treated with high-dose fat infusion. It appears that the fat emulsion FE-S15 causes only minor side effects but otherwise is well tolerated in dogs at a potentially toxic level.

Supplementing the food of Heidenhain pouch gastric fistula dogs with a KC1 product greatly extends the survivability of these dogs. Since there is a continuous discharge of gastric juice from the pouch to the exterior each time a meal is consumed, clinical signs such as dehydration, anorexia, rough hair coat and
lethargy
usually occur within a few months after gastric pouch surgery and, unless extensive supportive measures are taken, most dogs will die shortly thereafter. The five dogs which did not receive KC1 supplementation died within 6 months after surgery with a mean survival time of 2.4 +/- 0.9 months. Seven dogs that received a daily oral supplement of 1.5 g KC1 (20 mEq) in their food have, on average, survived more than ten times longer than dogs which received no KC1 supplementation, with a mean survival time of 25.1 +/- 4.4 months. All KC1 supplemented dogs survived for more than 15 months with three dogs currently surviving for 36-40 months. When two dogs experienced decreased serum potassium, sodium and/or chloride levels and showed clinical signs of electrolyte imbalance despite receiving daily oral KC1 supplementation, intervention with intravenous (i.v.) lactated
Ringer's solution
and increased amounts of oral KC1 supplement reversed these symptoms within 1-2 weeks. Dogs that received only i.v. Ringer's therapy died with 1 week of the onset of clinical signs. Daily oral KC1 supplementation, careful observation of behavior and eating patterns, and routine physical examinations and serum electrolyte measurements can greatly extend the life expectancy of dogs with Heidenhain pouch gastric fistulas.

A 14-month-old shorthaired cat was presented to the Animal Hospital in Skara, Sweden, with a two-day history of
lethargy
, anorexia and tachypnoea. Clinical examination and laboratory investigations revealed fever, dehydration, tick infestation, neutrophilia with left shift, lymphopenia, hyperglycaemia and intracytoplasmic neutrophilic Ehrlichia inclusions. After treatment with intravenous doxycycline and lactated
Ringer's solution
the temperature returned to normal. Oral treatment with doxycycline continued for 20 days. The ehrlichiosis diagnosis was confirmed by serology, polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing. No relapse was observed during the eight-month follow-up period. The granulocytotropic Ehrlichia strain found in the cat was later characterised by analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence which showed 100 per cent identity to DNA sequences found in Swedish canine and equine granulocytotropic Ehrlichia strains. This is, to the best of the authors' knowledge, the first reported case of granulocytic ehrlichiosis in a cat.

A 4-year-old spayed female Irish Setter was examined because of acute onset of
lethargy
, anorexia, and weakness. The dog had eaten an adult rabbit 36 hours earlier. Tularemia was suspected because of the rabbit exposure; however, other common diseases characterized by fever, malaise, and lymphadenopathy of acute onset were also considered (ie, ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever). The dog was treated with doxycycline (5 mg/kg [2.3 mg/lb], PO, q 24 h) for 14 days as well as supportive treatment with a balanced electrolyte solution (lactated
Ringer's solution
[200 mL, SC]). The diagnosis was first established by results of bacteriologic cultures of fine-needle aspirates obtained from lymph nodes and confirmed by results of ELISA and a polymerase chain reaction assay Successful and timely antemortem diagnosis of tularemia in dogs can be accomplished through lymph node aspiration and bacteriologic culture.
