Squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) inoculated intratracheally with 10(4.2)-10(8.2) egg median infectious doses (EID50) of type A influenza virus (H3N2) responded with clinical illness including such signs as fever, sneezing or coughing, coryza, and increased respiratory rates. Necropsy studies performed six days after inoculation revealed
bronchopneumonia
in addition to a mild tracheitis. Squirrel monkeys given 10(5)-6 x 10(8) colony-forming units (cfu) of Streptococcus pneumoniae intratracheally died four to six days later after developing severe illness characterized by fever, bacteremia,
lethargy
, anorexia, coughing, labored breathing, and
bronchopneumonia
. Monkeys given 770 cfu of S. pneumoniae responded with less severe symptoms and survived. Four squirrel monkeys inoculated with 10(8.2) EID50 of virus and then 102 hr later with 770 cfu of S. pneumoniae developed severe disease; three of the four animals died within 40 hr. At necropsy these monkeys had more extensive and severe
bronchopneumonia
than was seen in monkeys infected with either organism alone.

Three groups of turkeys were inoculated with strains of C. psittaci (B577, VS1, TT3) from different restriction endonuclease groups. Turkeys were necropsied at 15 times through post-inoculation day 70. Birds infected with the TT3 strain were
lethargic
and had decreased body weight. After forced exercise, dyspnea was seen in VS1-infected turkeys. Pericarditis was the most severe lesion in TT3-infected birds. Airsacculitis and
bronchopneumonia
were the most severe lesions in VS1-infected turkeys. Lateral nasal adenitis was in both VS1- and TT3-infected birds. Only mild peribronchial pneumonia was in B577-infected turkeys. Chlamydial antigen, identified by light microscopy using an immunoperoxidase technique, was seen from post-inoculation days 9 through 50 in the lateral nasal gland and at earlier times in other tissue from VS1- and TT3-infected turkeys. No chlamydial antigen was detected in tissue from B577-infected birds. These studies showed that chlamydial strains from different restriction endonuclease groups are associated with distinct disease syndromes in turkeys.

A 32-year-old black man from rural southeastern Texas had headache, fever, chills,
bronchopneumonia
, and an atypical rash, complicated by hypotension,
lethargy
, confusion, liver dysfunction, thrombocytopenia, and acute renal failure. The diagnosis of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) was not suspected until eight days after the onset of symptoms. He was subsequently treated with chloramphenicol, followed by hemodialysis and aggressive supportive therapy. He recovered uneventfully with complete return of renal function. This case emphasizes that RMSF should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any obscure febrile illness even in nonendemic areas.

Two Rocky Mountain bighorn lambs (Ovis canadensis canadensis) were held in captivity for 120 days before being housed with two domestic sheep. The lambs were clinically normal and had no Pasteurella spp. on nasal swab cultures. The domestic sheep were known to carry Pasteurella haemolytica biotype A in the nasal passages. After being in close contact for 19 days. P. haemolytica biotype A was cultured from nasal swabs of one of the bighorn lambs. By 26 days, both bighorn sheep developed coughs, were anorectic and became
lethargic
and nasal swabs yielded P. haemolytica biotype T, serotype 10. Twenty-nine days after contact, the lambs were necropsied and found to have extensive fibrinous
bronchopneumonia
. From affected tissues pure cultures of beta-hemolytic P. haemolytica biotype T, serotype 10 were grown. Both domestic sheep remained clinically normal and had no gross or microscopic lesions, but they carried the same P. haemolytica serotype in their tonsils. Behavioural observations gave no indication of stress in the bighorn lambs.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) involvement in myeloma is rarely seen. Recently we experienced a case with this lesion. A 70-year-old man developed consciousness level disorder during the course of
bronchopneumonia
. Neurological examination revealed
stuporous
consciousness, neck stiffness and Kernig's sign. Immunoelectrophoresis showed monoclonal IgG in serum. CSF which was obtained through lumbar puncture was clear and its pressure was 155 mm H2O. It contained 207 white cells/3 mm3; glucose, 54 mg/dl; and protein, 33 mg/dl. The differential count of the CSF was (in %) monocytes, 48.0; plasma cells, 25.5; neutrocytes, 15.5; and lymphocytes, 11.0. Cytoplasm and nucleus of the plasma cells were in various sizes. Some irregular multiple nuclei, flaming cells and grape cells were also observed in them. The cytoplasm of the plasma cells fluoresced with antisera against lambda chains IgG. The value of immunofluorescent technique in identifying plasma cells in the CSF is emphasized.

We report here on a case of primary alveolar hypoventilation in a 9 yr old child. From the age of 8 years, the patient has suffered from episodes of
bronchopneumonia
associated with severe respiratory insufficiency and
lethargy
. After recovery, cyanosis developed during the night and, later on, during the day. On two occasions, serious respiratory depression followed ketamine sedation for cardiac catheterization and total anaesthesia for cerebral angiography. Pulmonary function tests showed normal volumes and normal mechanics of breathing; blood gas analysis revealed a slight hypercapnic acidosis and hypoxia. The ventilatory response to CO2 was virtually absent, whereas voluntary hyperventilation normalized blood gas values. A polygraphic recording during sleep showed a marked worsening of hypoventilation, which occurred soon after falling asleep and continued throughout all sleep stages; sporadic central apnoeas, at times prolonged, were recorded only during light sleep. The patient, now 14 yr old, is maintained in satisfactory condition with low flow nocturnal oxygen administration combined with the use of a body respirator during sleep twice a week.

Megaesophagus was diagnosed in 9 adult ferrets. Clinical history of the ferrets included regurgitation, difficulty in swallowing, partial anorexia, and
lethargy
. Cachexia, dehydration, weakness, and ptyalism were observed on physical examination. Radiography revealed the esophagus of each ferret to be dilated in the thoracic and cervical regions. Of 4 ferrets that had lymphocytopenia, 2 had concurrent leukopenia. Serum biochemical analysis revealed high activity of alanine transaminase (4 ferrets) and aspartate transaminase (3), and hypoglycemia (4). Treatment included administration of fluid, antibiotics, and agents directed against possible primary causes of megaesophagus. Treatments were ineffective, and all of the ferrets died or were euthanatized. All 6 ferrets that were submitted for necropsy had
bronchopneumonia
, hepatic lipidosis, mild esophagitis, and gastritis. The etiopathogenesis of megaesophagus in the ferrets was not determined.

We report an autopsy case of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) with a five-year clinical course. A 67-year-old man was suffering from a gait disturbance and mental deterioration. Neurological examination at the age of 71 revealed pseudobulbar palsy, horizontal ophthalmoplegia, and truncal dystonia, and a diagnosis of PSP was made. Mental deterioration including forgetfulness and character change was also noted, and the patient sometimes exhibited intermittent
stuporous
states. Cranial computed tomography and magnetic resonance images revealed moderate brain atrophy, predominantly in the frontal lobes. The patient died of
bronchopneumonia
at the age of 71. Neuropathological examination confirmed typical pathological changes of PSP, such as neuronal loss, neurofibrillary tangles, and fibrillary gliosis in the subcortical nuclei. Gallyas-Braak silver impregnation revealed neurofibrillary tangles, silver-positive glia and thread-like structures in degenerating subcortical nuclei. In addition to these classical lesions, the argentophilic structures were detected in the cerebral cortex, cortical white matter and cerebellar white matter. In the cerebral cortex, they were abundant mostly in the precentral gyrus and subcortical white matter. Immunohistochemical studies revealed that most silver-positive structures were also tau 2 antibody-positive. Thus, these argentophilic structures seemed to be closely related to abnormal tau protein. Their distribution in this case implies that lesions related to abnormal tau protein may occur more extensively in the brains of PSP than expected.

2-Ethylhexanol (2EH) is a weak nongenotoxic hepatic peroxisome proliferator in the rat. It is a high-volume chemical intermediate in the preparation of the plasticizers bis-(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DEHA), bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and tris-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP), which are weak hepatocellular tumorigens in female mice. In consequence, the oncogenic potential of 2EH was evaluated in male (M) and female (F) rats and mice (50 animals/sex/group). Oral gavage doses of 2EH in 0.005% aqueous Cremophor EL (polyoxyl-35 castor oil) were given five times a week to rats: 0 (water), 0 (vehicle), 50, 150, and 500 mg/kg for 24 months, and to mice: 0 (water), 0 (vehicle), 50, 200, and 750 mg/kg for 18 months. Statistical comparisons of data were made between vehicle controls and treatment groups. There were no differences of biological significance between data from vehicle and water control groups. In rats, there were no dose-related changes at 50 mg/kg. There was reduced body weight gain at 150 mg/kg (M, 16; F, 12%) and 500 mg/kg (M, 33; F, 31%) and an increased incidence of
lethargy
and unkemptness. There were dose-related increases in relative liver, stomach, brain, kidney, and testis weights at sacrifice. Female rat mortality was markedly increased at 500 mg/kg. There was marked aspiration-induced
bronchopneumonia
in rats at 500 mg/kg; hematologic, gross, and microscopic changes, including tumors, were otherwise comparable among all rat groups. In mice at 50 and 200 mg/kg there were no dose-related changes and essentially no time-dependent or time-independent adverse trends in liver tumor incidence at the 5% significance level. At 750 mg/kg mouse body weight gain was reduced (M, 26; F, 24%), and mortality increased (M and F, 30%) versus vehicle controls. At 750 mg/kg there was a slight increase in nonneoplastic focal hyperplasia in the forestomach of mice (M 5/50, F 4/50) versus vehicle controls (M 1/50, F 1/50). There were increases in mouse relative liver (F, 21%) and stomach (M, 13%; F, 19%) weights at 750 mg/kg. There was a 12% incidence of hepatic basophilic foci and an 18% incidence of hepatocellular carcinomas in male mice at 750 mg/kg, not statistically significant compared with either control by Fisher's exact test. There was a 12% incidence of hepatic basophilic foci and a 10% incidence of hepatocellular carcinomas in female mice at 750 mg/kg, statistically significant (p < 0.05) compared with vehicle but not with water controls by Fisher's exact test. There were no metastases. Time-dependent and -independent statistical analyses showed an adverse trend in the incidence of hepatocellular carcinomas in male and female mice, correlated with toxicity (expressed as mortality) at 750 mg/kg. The time-adjusted incidence of hepatocellular carcinomas in male mice (18.8%) was within the historical normal range at the testing facility (0-22%), but that in females (13.1%) lay outside the normal range (0-2%). Under the conditions of these studies 2EH was not oncogenic in rats, but there were weak adverse trends in hepatocellular carcinoma incidence in mice at high dose levels which may have been associated with toxicity. The major effects of chronic dosing were mortality in female rats at 500 mg/kg and in male and female mice at 750 mg/kg, accompanied by reductions in body weight gain in rats at 150 and 500 mg/kg and in mice at 750 mg/kg. Direct comparison of any tumorogenic effects of 2EH given alone to female mice with those due to 2EH formed in vivo from DEHA, DEHP, or TEHP is limited by the high mortality caused by 2ER in female mice at equivalent doses of 2EH. While 2EH may be a contributing factor in the hepatocellular carcinogenesis in female mice associated with the chronic administration of DEHA and DEHP, it is unlikely to be the entire proximate carcinogen.

A 3-mo-old, male African hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) was anorectic and
lethargic
for a period of 3 days prior to death. Necropys revealed lungs that were diffusely firm, dark red, and dorsally adhered by fibrinous tags to the pericardial sac. Histopathology revealed necrosuppurative
bronchopneumonia
with pulmonary abscesses and suppurative pericarditis and myocarditis. A Corynebacterium sp. was isolated from the lungs. We believe this is the first reported case of corynebacterial pneumonia in an African hedgehog.
