Wistar male rats were tested for nephrotoxicity and carcinogenicity after administration of ferric nitrilotriacetate [(NTA) CAS: 139-13-9] (Fe-NTA) [No. of rats (n) = 24] and Al-NTA (n = 24). The control rats were given AlCl3 (n = 10), NTA (n = 10), and saline (n = 10). Sublethal doses of Fe-NTA [5-7 mg Fe/kg (body wt)] and Al-NTA [1.5-2.0 mg Al/kg (body wt)] were chosen and injected ip for 3 months. AlCl3 and NTA were given in equivalent doses and saline was given in equivalent volumes. All the rats given Fe-NTA or Al-NTA had a depressed weight gain, polyuria, and glucosuria from the 1st week. Histologically,
acute tubular necrosis
and regenerating epithelial cells were observed. Regenerative atypical epithelial cells in the renal cortex were seen at the termination of Fe-NTA or Al-NTA administration. Control rats had no remarkable changes. After 1 year, primary

and metastases to liver, lung, and peritoneum were observed only in Fe-NTA-treated rats (14 of 18 surviving rats). On the contrary, there were no tumors in Al-NTA-treated rats (none of 12 surviving rats). The results suggest that nephrotoxicity and

are two independent phenomena from Al-NTA treatment and that a long-term sublethal dose of Al-NTA is not related to renal carcinogenicity.

To determine the nature and frequency of renal disorders in AIDS we reviewed the records of thirty-two patients hospitalized over a twenty-two month period. Group I, including all patients with AIDS who demonstrated proteinuria and/or renal insufficiency, numbered thirteen patients, in ten of whom renal tissue was available. Renal abnormalities included proteinuria in twelve patients, which exceeded two grams per day in seven. The glomerular histologic lesions included focal glomerulosclerosis, diffuse mesangial hypercellularity, diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis, and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis. . Nine of these thirteen patients developed renal insufficiency, and four of them required dialysis. Their mortality by the end of the study period was eleven of thirteen patients (85 percent), significantly worse in the short term than AIDS patients without renal problems. The patients in Group I were compared to the nineteen AIDS patients without renal abnormalities in Group II. The Group I patients had a higher incidence of oral and esophageal candidiasis, other fungal infections, and infections with Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare. They also had a higher incidence of exposure to aminoglycoside antibiotics and amphotericin B, and experienced more clinical shock than their Group II counterparts. It is concluded that patients with AIDS may demonstrate renal abnormalities on the basis of immune, hemodynamic, infectious, and neoplastic derangements.

The aim of this basic study was (1) to isolate prothrombin mRNA from normal human and rat kidneys; (2) to confirm expression level changes in stone-forming rat kidneys; and (3) to analyze the DNA sequence of renal prothrombin. This study was undertaken to determine whether that work-up is appropriate for a female patient population. We studied 49 women referred to a urogynecologist for AMH. Our findings confirm the importance of the work-up of AMH in women. Ultrasound was effective in diagnosing upper tract lesions, with less cost and morbidity than IVU. Larger studies are needed to determine who should be screened, whether the work-up should differ for younger women, possible treatments for benign findings, and appropriate follow-up.

Cholesterol embolic disease in the renal allograft is not recognized as an important cause of graft dysfunction. We describe here two renal transplant patients with cholesterol embolization in their allograft biopsies. The first, a 48-year-old patient, received a renal transplant from a 62-year-old donor with a history of hypertension and tobacco use. and a combination of chronic rejection and multiple cholesterol emboli. Cholesterol embolic disease is probably an under-reported cause of renal graft dysfunction. The source of the emboli may be either the donor or the recipient's vessels. Since the current tendency is to accept older donors and recipients with more advanced atherosclerotic disease, this condition is likely to become more frequent in the future. Particular care must be taken at the time of organ procurement and during the evaluation of organ donors, in order to reduce the risk of embolization.
