Thecal vascular tissue and blood cells were studied by light, transmission, and scanning electron microscopy during ovulation in the ewe. Cross-sectional areas of vascular lumens increased after the preovulatory surge in luteinizing hormone, decreased before ovulation, and then increased again as corpora lutea formed. Numbers of blood vessels per unit area of thecal tissue declined just before ovulation, then increased during luteinization. The follicular
stigma
that develops near the time of ovulation was completely void of blood vessels. These findings were paralleled chronologically by evidence of vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, tissue edema, congestion,
ischemia
, vascular injury, and angiogenesis. Neutrophils and eosinophils migrated out of the vascular compartment before ovulation. Around the time of ovulation, there were masses of extravasated blood in thecal tissue, and numerous platelets adhered to damaged vascular endothelium. Extravasated monocytes/macrophages were evident after ovulation. Numbers of extravascular lymphocytes remained relatively constant, but the lymphocytes were often marginated along endothelium in ovulatory and postovulatory follicles. Basophilic cells accumulated in association with the development of new capillaries during luteinization. Our observations are consistent with the concept that periovulatory follicular processes include acute inflammation, tissue damage, glandular transformation, and healing.

The modifying effects of Crocus sativus (CS)
stigma
extract on neurobehavioral activities, malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and Na(+),K(+)-ATPase activities, and glutamate (Glu) and aspartate (Asp) content were examined in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion (MCAO) model of acute cerebral ischemia in rats. The right MCA of male Wistar rats was occluded for 2 hours using intraluminal 4-0 monofilament, and reperfusion was allowed for 22 hours. MCAO caused significant depletion in the contents of GSH and its dependent enzymes while significant elevation of MDA, Glu, and Asp. The activities of Na(+),K(+)-ATPase, SOD, and CAT were decreased significantly by MCAO. The neurobehavioral activities (grip strength, spontaneous motor activity, and motor coordination) were also decreased significantly in the MCAO group. All the alterations induced by
ischemia
were significantly attenuated by pretreatment of CS (100 mg/kg of body weight, p.o.) 7 days before the induction of MCAO and correlated well with histopathology by decreasing the neuronal cell death following MCAO and reperfusion. The present results may suggest the effectiveness of CS in focal
ischemia
most probably by virtue of its antioxidant property.

The ovulatory process is extraordinary in that it constitutes a hormone-induced injury. Gonadotropin delivered via the follicular vascular wreath stimulates secretion of plasminogen activator by contiguous ovarian surface epithelial cells. A consequent elevation in interstitial plasmin activates collagenases and cleaves tumor necrosis factor alpha from its anchors on endothelium. Collagen fibril degradation and cellular death at the apex of the preovulatory follicle are hallmarks of impending ovulation. Follicular contractions rupture the weakened fabric at the apex, and the ovum, which has been disconnected from the underlying granulosa, is expelled; these components of the cascade are prostaglandin-mediated. Ovulation is required for fertility; unfortunately, it imparts a cancer risk to the ovarian surface epithelium. Scalp avulsion injuries are usually attributed to entrapment of long hair or clothing in agricultural or industrial machinery or traffic accidents. Though rare, these injuries may be dangerous, and resulting cosmetic defect and alopecia lead to social
stigma
and poor self-esteem. Early intervention in the form of microvascular repair and replantation prevent morbidity and improve outcome. In this case series, we have discussed 3 cases of scalp replantation, 2 complete and 1 partial. Immediate microvascular reconstruction was planned in each case. Single surgical team approach was followed, vessels were identified and operated under an operative microscope. No vein grafts were used. Operative outcome was good, and scalp healed well. Cosmetic outcome was excellent, and there was no need for secondary revisions or use of tissue expanders. Immediate referral of such cases to institutes with facility for microvascular repair is recommended to reduce
ischemia
time. Superficial temporal artery is the first choice for microvascular repair in scalp replants, and a single artery anastomosis is sufficient to perfuse the entire scalp. Deep temporal artery is a viable alternative in cases where repair with superficial temporal vessels will require use of vein graft, cutting short operative time and associated complications.
