This enquiry, the limits of which are easy to determine, permits one to note that in patients with chronic hemorrhagic colonic disease samples of digestive juice, carried, out at the level of the colonic mucosa, permit isolation of a large number of pseudomonadaceae, these bacteria are extremely various. A single patient may harbour 10 to 12 species. These bacteria, usually harmless, belong to the natural microbiocenoses, but they may under certain circumstances, increase in number and, according to Fabiani, induce severe symptoms or even be fatal. The mass of bacteria isolated and identified did not permit a study of bacterial sensitivity. The most seriously affected subjects clinically, usually had various bacteria which excludes the accusation of one species and eliminates any idea of bacterial specificity in the constitution of the syndromes observed. The disturbance seems to be a consequence of these chronic diseases and not the cause. In fact, no pathogenic germ was isolated, which one might consider to be responsible for the disease. Finally, it is wise to conclude that patients with
irritable colon
syndromes who formed part of this investigation, simply presented some imbalance in the bacterial flora which was sometimes very marked with a predominance of proteolytic Pseudomonas.

The activity of sorbiperan was assessed during radiological examinations of 15 patients with hypomobility of the gallbladder, associated in some cases with atonic dyspepsia, and 25 cases of
spastic colon
with constipation and/or diarrhea due to diverticulosis, dolichocolon, sigmoiditis, or parasitosis. Patients with gallbladder dysfunction were examined radiologically before and after oral administration of 20 to 40 ml of sorbiperan, the dose varying as a function of bodyweight. In 3 patients, the hypermobility of the gallbladder provoked by this agent was greater than that observed with all usually employed products, in 11 cases the cholagogue produced an excellent effect, while in one case there was no observed effect. Patients with colitis were administered a barium enemea, and an initial series of films were taken. These were repeated after addition of 80 ml of sorbiperan to the same enema. Total, rapid evacuation of the colon was observed in 8 cases, while in 15 cases it was of excellent quality. No effect was noted in 2 cases. Sorbiperan provokes effective contractions of the gallbladder, favours sphincter of Oddi dynamics, increases motility of all digestive tract segments, and very significantly accelerates gastro-entero-colic peristalsis. Tolerance was excellent.

Functional colic disorders such as the
irritable bowel syndrome
are very common in Ivory Coast. Etiologic, clinical, biological and roentgenological features were studied in 100 randomized cases. Findings were compared to the features encountered in Caucasians. Psychologic factors, constipation and therapeutic problems that seem to be of significance for understanding functional colic conditions in Ivoirians and other West Africans are discussed.
