This is the first report of the simultaneous occurrence of mucinous carcinoid and endometriosis in an inside-out appendix. The literature concerning carcinoids, endometriosis and
intussusception
of the appendix is reviewed. The mucinous, or goblet cell carcinoid was positive for
mucin
, argentaffin and argyrophil stains. Paneth cells were present. Two and one-half years with no tumor recurrence suggest good prognosis as previously reported.

A 16-year-old Negro girl underwent exploratory laparotomy for ileocecal
intussusception
and was found to have moderately well-differentiated
mucin
-producing adenocarcinoma of the ileocecal valve. Specific aspects of this disease in children are discussed and an appeal for early diagnostic studies in cases of children who complain of weight loss, chronic constipation, and abdominal pain is made. Finially, on the basis of the natural history of the disease, a "second-look" operation is recommended.

The diagnosis of adenocarcinoma of the colon in juvenile subjects usually poses a difficult problem due to its clinical presentation, which usually mimics disorders that are commonly found in children. This article presents the case of a 13-year-old boy who was admitted 2 weeks earlier to another hospital, where his condition was not recognized. He presented with abdominal signs and symptoms suggestive of diseases such as gastroenteritis, appendicitis, and
intussusception
which are common in this age group. The x-ray film showed dilated loops of small bowel and the proximal portion of colon, suggesting intestinal obstruction. At surgery, a 4 X 4 cm tumor in the transverse colon was resected. Microscopically, the lesion showed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma with foci of
mucin
production.

Mucinous cystadenomas usually occur in the appendix, ovaries and pancreas. This is the first report to describe mucinous cystadenoma of the ascending colon. A 32-year-old female presented with abdominal pain. Radiographic studies demonstrated a space-occupying lesion in the ascending colon associated with
intussusception
. Right colectomy revealed a cystic mass within the ascending colon that contained thick
mucin
and was lined by
mucin
-producing columnar epithelium. Clinical and pathologic features with a brief review of the literature are presented.

We report a case of intestinal schistosomiasis manifesting as colonic
intussusception
resulting from a mucocele of the appendix, caused by the obstruction of appendiceal outflow by schistosome egg-induced fibrosis. An 81-year-old woman from China presented with a tender right iliac fossa mass and computed tomography (CT) showed
intussusception
in the ascending colon. Exploratory laparotomy confirmed an appendiceal mass causing
intussusception
of the cecum into the ascending colon, with the appendix as the lead point, and lymphnode enlargement. We performed a right hemicolectomy for the appendiceal tumor. However, histologic examination revealed schistosoma eggs within the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis propria, and subserosal fat of the appendix, cecum, and ascending colon, and lymph nodes. The absence of dysplasia in the appendiceal mucosa indicated that the mucocele had developed from fibrosis induced by schistosome eggs obstructing the luminal outflow of
mucin
. Postoperatively, the patient was given praziquantel and recovered well.

Intussusception
is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction in adult patients, but is common in children. In fact, it accounts for an estimated 1% of all cases of bowel obstruction in adults, although adult
intussusception
of the large intestine is rare. Sigmoidorectal intussusception, however, is a rare variety with few cases reported in the literature. A mucinous adenocarcinoma, a subtype of adenocarcinoma, is characterized by extracellular
mucin
production and accounts for between 5% and 15% of the neoplasms of the colon and rectum. Despite the general consensus supporting surgical resections for adult intussuceptions, controversy remains over whether intussuceptions should be reduced before resection. Most cases of colon
intussusception
should not be reduced before resection because they most likely represent a primary adenocarcinoma. However, prior reduction followed by a resection can be considered for the sigmoidorectal
intussusception
to avoid inadvertent low rectal cancer sugery. We experienced one case of sigmoidorectal
intussusception
caused by a mucinous adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon in a 79-year-old woman. Abdominal computed tomography demonstrated a sigmoidorectal
intussusception
. After the end-to-end anastomosis-dilator-assisted reduction, the patient underwent a laparoscopic oncological anterior resection under the impression that a sigmoidorectal
intussusception
existed. We report a successful laparoscopic anterior resection in a patient with an
intussusception
caused by a sigmoid malignant tumor.

A 35-year-old woman was seen as an outpatient with a 3-month history of pain in the right iliac fossa. A CT scan of her abdomen revealed the presence of a mucocele of the appendix. Intra-operatively, an appendico-appendicular
intussusception
was found. Histology confirmed the presence of a mucinous cystadenoma with the presence of acellular
mucin
on the serosal surface of the appendix. This association has rarely been described in the literature. Prompt surgical intervention is advocated to prevent the subsequent development of pseudomyxoma peritonei. We present a case of
intussusception
of the appendix with a mucinous cystadenoma as its lead point.
