Postmortem examination of a 3-year-old male Iranian native sheep with a history of anorexia and severe colic, revealed an intussusception of the small intestine, 30 cm proximal to the ileocaecal junction. Scattered hyperplastic lesions were present in the jejunal and ileal mucosa especially in intussuscipien. Microscopic examination of these lesions showed severe papillary hyperplasia of the epithelium associated with developmental stages of coccidia in the epithelial cells. An unusual type of intussusception and the presence of the proliferative nodular form of coccidiosis in the intestinal wall of intussuscipien suggested that coccidiosis could be considered as the possible cause of the problem.

Adult intussusception is extremely uncommon and constitutes approximately 5-16% of all intussusceptions. We describe a case of ileo-ileo-colic intussusception secondary to an ileal lipoma occurring in a 22 year old man who in addition had autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. CT scan played a pivotal role in not only demonstrating the cause of intestinal obstruction (intussusception) but also showed that a lipoma was the lead point precipitating the intussusception.

Sixty-four consecutive cases of intussusception in 48 infants and 16 older children managed at Jos University Teaching Hospital between January 1990 and December 1998 are reviewed. The age range was between 3 months and 15 years (mean 2.2 years) and the male to female ratio was 3.6:1. The quartet of abdominal pain, bloody mucoid stools, abdominal mass and palpable rectal mass was present in 70% compared with the classical triad (abdominal pain, bloody mucoid stools and abdominal mass) which occurred in only 32%. All the children had surgery. In 26 (41%) of the children, no associated cause was found, in three polyps formed the lead point and in five children a buried appendicectomy stump formed the lead point. In 30 (47%) other children, mesenteric lymphadenopathy and inflamed Peyer's patches were noted. Ileo-colic intussusception occurred in 32 (50%) children. Manual reduction was successful in 67%. Bowel resection for gangrene, irreducibility and an iatrogenic colonic tear was done in 30% of patients. Two (3%) had spontaneous reductions. There were four deaths. The commonest complications were wound infection and adhesive intestinal obstruction.

Juvenile polyps are the commonest colonic polyps seen in children and present most often with rectal bleed. Intussusception is an extremely rare presentation in juvenile polyposis (JP) syndrome. This case highlights the rare association of ileo-colic intussusception with non-familial Juvenile Polyposis.

Meckel's diverticulum is the congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract affecting about 2% of the population. It is a true diverticulum containing all layers of the ileum wall. Heterotopic tissue is frequently present (25%): gastric mucosa, duodenal mucosa, jejunal mucosa and pancreatic tissue. Meckel's diverticulum is localized about 50 cm from the ileo-colic valve on the external border of the ileum. Most of Meckel's diverticula are clinically silent; clinical symptoms (19%) are in cases of complications such as: strangulation of the bowel in a ring formed by the diverticulum, intussusception of the diverticulum into the ileum, volvulus, incarceration of the diverticulum in hernia, tumour originating in the diverticulum. The diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum is very difficult. The most useful in the diagnosis are plain abdominal radiographs, barium studies, CT, sonography and scintigraphy Abdominal sonography shows a tubular fluid structure localized far from the coecum. The wall of the diverticulum is swollen and in the lumen are chyme or fat.

Adult intussusception is rare, and the majority of cases has an underlying cause that requires surgical resection. We report a case of a 39 yr-old man with ileo-ileo-colic intussusception caused by ileal lipoma that was successfully managed by a laparoscopic-assisted surgical maneuver. Using a three-cannula technique, ileo-colic intussusception was reduced laparoscopically. Then, through a 4-cm transverse incision in the right lower quadrant abdomen, ileo-ileal intussusception was reduced manually, and a resection of the tumor-bearing ileal segment and end-to-end anastomosis was performed extracorporeally. Although the role of laparoscopy in managing intussusception is not clearly defined, laparoscopy may be an alternative approach to the surgical treatment of adult intussusception in selected cases.

The authors report eight cases of intussusception of small and large intestine in adults during five years. 3 of the intussusception caused by simple tumors in five cases by malignant. In three cases were chronic presented long term signs and symptoms. Ileo-ileal invagination was diagnostised at 3 patients, ileo-caecal in one case and ileocolic intussusception also in one case. In 2 cases developed caeco-colic, in one case colo-colic invagination. Resection was strongly indicated in seven cases and wedge resection was done at the last patient. One patient has died of cerebral multiple embilization. They review the etiology and pathology, the signs and symptoms as well as the difficulties during diagnosis and treatment of the intussusceptions according to their own experience and literary datas. The authors draw the attention to the importance of the modern iconographic, tools, particularly the ultrasonography in the diagnosis of intussusception.

The definition of ileus has undergone deep changes over the last three millennia. The term ileus was originally used in Classic Greece to describe a common cause of intestinal obstruction, and subsequently the Romans would often translate it into the Latin word volvulus. During the Renaissance, ileus, volvulus and intussusception became synonymous with a vulgar term--Miserere Mei or Miserere colic--whose origin and evolution are still much of a mystery. This paper provides some historical investigation on the Miserere Mei or Miserere colic, with the aim of discussing its evolution within medical literature during the 17th and 18th centuries.

The finding of a colo-colic intussusception with pneumatosis intestinalis is described with imaging. This was confirmed at surgery together with pathological confirmation of pneumatosis intestinalis. This rare association occurred in an infant with Peters' anomaly who was taking oral steroids.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the acid-base status and the concentration of organic acids in horses with colic caused by various disorders. Blood samples were collected from 50 horses with colic and from 20 controls. No intravenous fluids had been given prior to sample collection. Identified causes of colic included gastric ulceration, small intestinal volvulus, cecal intussusception, cecal rupture, colonic impaction, left dorsal colon displacement, right dorsal colon displacement, colonic volvulus, colitis, peritonitis, and uterine torsion. Thirty-seven horses recovered from treatment of colic, 8 horses were euthanized, and 5 died. Most cases were not in severe metabolic acidosis. In previous studies, most horses presented for diagnosis and treatment of colic were in metabolic acidosis and in shock.
