Two cases of primary small bowel tumors causing an acute intussusception are presented. In one case two polyps were found and in the other case a lipoma in the wall of the jejunum. In both cases there were symptoms of recurrent bowel obstruction for several months before the acute condition. Although intussusception caused by a benign tumor of the small bowel is a rare condition it should be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of abdominal pain of doubtful origin.

A review of intussusception in adults treated over a 12-year period is presented. In most cases intussusception was ileocolic in type and symptoms were nonspecific. Benign neoplasms and idiopathic causes were more prevalent in small bowel cases while malignant neoplasms were more common when the colon was involved. In 38% of the cases, no obvious cause for the intussusception was found. All cases were treated surgically, usually by reduction or resection or both.

Adult intussusception is uncommon and varies considerably from the more common occurrence of this disorder in infants and children. Although lipoma represents the most common benign tumor of the colon, it is a relatively rare cause of gastrointestinal symptoms. A rare case of adult intussusception of the descending colon caused by a giant lipoma is presented and discussed.

Lipoma of the large intestine is a rare, benign tumor. The clinical findings and the diagnostic studies are analysed and a case of giant submucosal colonic lipoma removed by colonoscopy is reported. Colonoscopic removal of submucosal lipomas is recommended, while the necessity of a surgical treatment in presence of intussusception or subserosal lipomas is confirmed.

Gastroduodenal intussusception is a very rare entity and is generally associated with benign tumor of the stomach. We report a new case of central gastroduodenal intussusception related to schwannoma. We emphasize the radiologic features which can be misinterpreted as well as the endoscopic aspect hitherto unreported.

Intussusception in the adult is rare. The cases reported here illustrate the usual clinical development of the condition: incomplete, subacute, or chronic subobstruction. Intussusception is usually associated with a localized lesion, mostly a small bowel benign tumor, and a colonic malignant tumor. Diagnosis is effected using barium enema, ultrasonography, or CT scanning. Treatment of intussusception requires surgical intervention.

We report a case of left ureteral intussusception associated with a ureteral polyp. At operation a 7 cm. long polyp was seen originating from the tip of the inside of the proximal ureter, causing 1.7 cm. of antegrade invagination. The polyp was resected and the invaginated region was repaired since pathological examination revealed a benign tumor. At followup an excretory urogram demonstrated prompt improvement of left hydronephrosis.

Lipomas are the most common mesenchymal benign tumor of the colon. They are usually asymptomatic but may cause bleeding, obstruction, intussusception, or abdominal pain. The diagnosis can be made by colonoscopy, barium enema examination, and by computed tomography (CT). We have reported a case of large submucosal lipoma of the ascending colon with intestinal obstruction. At laparotomy there was an intussusception descending colon, and subtotal colectomy was performed.

Angiomyolipomas are benign mesenchymal tumors, but those that arise from the small intestine are exceedingly rare. We report on a 48-year-old woman who had an ileal angiomyolipoma, who presented clinically with vague abdominal pain and bloody stool. Small-bowel intussusception was shown on an abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan. We discuss the clinical manifestations and clinicopathological and immunohistochemical findings of this benign tumor which appeared in this rare location.

Inflammatory fibroid polyps are rare benign tumor-like lesions of the gastrointestinal tract. Most frequently they are localized in the gastric antrum but can develop anywhere in the GI tract. In the small intestine the ileum is the most common site, where these polyps can cause invagination and intussusception. This happened to the patient we describe here. The latest immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and molecular genetic studies are suggestive of dendritic cell origin of inflammatory fibroid polyps, with myofibroblastic differentiation in some cases.
