Inflammatory fibrous polyp of the ileum is a rare condition. This report adds one patient to the 11 previously reported. These lesions usually involve intermittent, colicky abdominal pain, often of several weeks duration and occasionally as a cause of acute intestinal obstruction. X-rays usually show small bowel obstruction or intussusception, but may be completely normal. The pathological diagnosis is seldom made before microscopic examination of resected specimens. They are clinically interpreted to be neoplasm and treated by segmental resection. No recurrences have been reported after treatment. Etiology is unknown.

Colonic intussusception is a condition primarily found in infants and young children. In adults, it is usually associated with a colonic neoplasm. The following report illustrates a case of colonic intussusception in an adult uremic patient in whom postmortem examination showed evidence only of intramural colonic hemorrhage.

Two newborns with similar lesions were treated at two children's hospitals. Each newborn presented with an abdominal emergency that required immediate surgery. In each instance, small bowel obstruction was clinically and radiologically suspected; barium enema examination showed an irreducible colonic intussusception in the first baby and a colonic perforation in the second. Both these findings required immediate operation. The baby with the intussusception had a colon resection and a primary anastomosis, while the newborn with the perforation had a resection and temporary colostomy. Subsequent to the initial surgery, neither baby has received any further treatment for the tumor. The two patients are now well at 13 yr and 6 yr of age.

A unique case of a hitherto unreported antegrade intussusception of the ureter secondary to a lead pedunculated polypoid transitional cell tumor is presented. Radiological documentation and surgical verification are illustrated. An attempted explanation of the peculiar radiographic appearance proximal to and within the intussusception is given. The potential aid in preoperative recognition of such an entity is proposed.

Intussusception of the vermiform appendix is reported in a frequency of 0.01%. Different aetiologic factors are implicated, a directed hyperperistalsis against intraluminal obstruction is thought to be the pathogenetic mechanism. There is a lack of typical symptoms, very often appendicitis or caecal tumor is diagnosed. Concomitant inflammation renders recognition more difficult. The caecum must be resected if a malignant tumour cannot be ruled out. Appendectomy is performed in definite findings. Our case report may remind of this uncommon occurrence.

The case of a circumscribed polypoid eosinophilic granuloma of the small intestine is reported. The tumor caused an intussusception with consecutive ileus. After resection of the involved bowels the patient was healed. No allergic history was found. The morphology, clinical features, and the therapy of this type of tumor is discussed and the relationship to the Histocytosis X is emphasized.

This is the first report of the simultaneous occurrence of mucinous carcinoid and endometriosis in an inside-out appendix. The literature concerning carcinoids, endometriosis and intussusception of the appendix is reviewed. The mucinous, or goblet cell carcinoid was positive for mucin, argentaffin and argyrophil stains. Paneth cells were present. Two and one-half years with no tumor recurrence suggest good prognosis as previously reported.

We present a 14 year old girl with a two years' history of colicky abdominal pain associated with the palpation of a tumor in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. During these two years, the pain and the tumor appeared and disappeared spontaneously several times. In the operation we found a jejunojejunal intussusception, the head being a sessile polyp placed 20 cm from the ligament of Treitz. The pathological examination showed a polyp formed by mucosa similar to the gastric one with chief and parietal cells. We discuss the clinical pictures that can be associated with this pathological entity in this uncommon localization in opposition to the more common settling in Meckel's diverticulum.

An 81-year old man who had a plasmacytoma of the ileum presented with melena for which no bleeding site could be established before surgery. He developed intussusception and the tumor was located at laparotomy. Metastases to the skin and axillary lymph nodes were documented prior to his operation, to mesenteric lymph nodes at surgery and to intrathoracic lymph nodes and a substernal goiter at autopsy. The liver, spleen, bones and marrow were not involved by myeloma or amyloid. Immunoelectrophoresis demonstrated an Ig-A (lambda) monoclonal protein in the serum (with nondiagnostic serum zone electrophoresis patterns) and lambda light chains in the urine. Immunoflourescense of Ig-A (lambda) globulin was present in imprint preparations from the bowel tumor.

Twelve cases of neonatal intussusception are presented and another 25 taken from the literature are reviewed. Intussusception in the first month of life is a distinct clinical and pathological entity, presenting as bowel obstruction in the first days and usually led by a tumor. In the past, a high mortality rate has been related to late diagnosis. The barium-enema examination is diagnostic.
