The crude water extract (NS-1) from a seaweed (
Digenea
simplex C. Agardh Rhodomelaceae) exhibited anti-human
immunodeficiency
virus (HIV)-1 activity in vitro. The inhibitory effect of the extract on the cytopathic activity of HIV-1 and it's antigen production was examined using a microplate method, immunofluorescent assay, and an HIV antigen detection kit (Abbott). NS-1 inhibited both the cytopathic effect of HIV-1 to MT-4 cells and the giant cell formation of Molt-4 cells infected with HIV-1.
