Interferons (IFN) provide a systemic alternative for the therapy of human papillomavirus (HPV) induced anogenital
warts
. Local therapy cannot totally eliminate latent viral genome in the perilesional epithelium. This causes the danger of new exacerbations. Reviewing different reports and by own therapeutic experience we think, that IFN treatment may be successful in combination with local therapy and for pre-surgical diminution of extended condyloma. Sufficient dose is necessary. Poor effects are to be expected if the
warts
lasted for longer than 12 months and in case of severe
immunodeficiency
.

We describe a patient with a long history of skin lesions clinically and histologically consistent with epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) who developed malignant thymoma. HPV-9DNA was found in the macular lesion and HPV-4DNA and HPV-9DNA in the coexistent common
warts
. Thrombocytopenia and hypogammaglobulinaemia preceded the diagnosis of thymoma. Our patient seems to represent an example of an EV-like syndrome in
immunodeficiency
.

Induction of allergic contact dermatitis over
warts
(verrucae vulgaris) causes viral immunity and resolution of the
warts
in a large percentage of cases. Human
immunodeficiency
virus could be removed, concentrated, and placed back into the patient's own skin at a site of contact dermatitis.

We report on a 30-year-old woman with premature aging,
immunodeficiency
, and other abnormalities. She had many manifestations of the Mulvihill-Smith syndrome, a disorder that has been described in 4 sporadic individuals, ranging in age from 4 to 17 years. The common manifestations include short stature, microcephaly, a senile face with an underdeveloped lower half, diminished facial subcutaneous fat, multiple pigmented nevi, sensorineural hearing loss, and a low IgG level. Our patient also had severe mental retardation, brachydactyly, severe T cell dysfunction, and suffered from severe
verruca vulgaris
and a chronic, active Epstein-Barr virus infection. The fact that her parents were first cousins suggests autosomal recessive inheritance of her disorder. Two alternative possibilities were considered: the disorder in the patient represents the Mulvihill-Smith syndrome with immune deficiency as a sign of its advanced stage, or a hitherto undescribed syndrome.

Between 1982 and 1990, 4 males with extensive intraurethral
warts
presented with marked inflammation of the external genitalia. When sepsis had settled all patients underwent ventral urethrotomy, in which the urethra was divided median as far back as was necessary to expose all of the
warts
. Surgical and electro-excision were the preferred methods of removal. Of 3 patients who developed recurrences 2 were lost to follow-up. A third remained without treatment for 1 year and when next seen the
warts
had spontaneously resolved and his urethra was closed. A fourth patient was lost to follow-up for 4 years before returning with destruction of his external genitalia by a verrucous carcinoma. The human
immunodeficiency
virus (HIV) did not appear to be a factor in the natural history of intraurethral
warts
in 2 patients who were negative for serum antibodies 2 and 8 years after presentation.

Patients infected with the human
immunodeficiency
virus (HIV) often develop multiple papillomatous lesions of the oral cavity. In the present study, a total of 67 biopsies from benign oral lesions were analyzed for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA using Southern-blot hybridization in combination with a polymerase chain reaction designed to detect all known HPV types, as well as unidentified types. These samples, collected at random from a high-risk population, were subsequently divided into 57 biopsies originating from patients with confirmed HIV infection and 10 biopsies from patients with unknown HIV status. Each sample was amplified with 7 different combinations of degenerate primers. All amplified products were sequenced. HPV DNA sequences were detected in 67% (45/67) of the samples. HPV 7 (19%) and HPV 32 (28%) were the predominant HPV types. HPV 32 was present in 2/4 fibromas tested. Two new HPV types, HPV 72 and HPV 73, were identified in oral
warts
with atypia. The complete genomes of these viruses were cloned and sequenced. Other HPV types detected were HPV 2a, HPV 6b, HPV 13, HPV 16, HPV 18, HPV 55, HPV 59 and HPV 69.

A six-month-old intact male rottweiler presented with papillomatous growths protruding from the oral mucous membranes. A tentative diagnosis of canine oral papillomavirus (COPV) infection was made based on the gross appearance of the numerous lesions and the young age of the patient. Two
warts
from the oral mucosa were removed surgically for further diagnostic investigations. The viral aetiology of the diseases was confirmed by histopathological and electron microscopic findings, and by the identification of specific COPV DNA is removed oral papillomatous tissue. The patient was followed clinically and complete regression of the oral lesions occurred after four weeks. Neither the route of transmission nor the source of infection was found.
Immunodeficiency
as a contributing aetiological factor to the development of COPV-induced lesions as discussed.

Survival data in the last decade for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) other than human
immunodeficiency
virus (HIV) are uneven across the states/territories. The incidence of gonorrhoea decreased by more than 80%, but at different times in different patient groups, different states, and different anatomical sites. There was a resurgence of rectal gonorrhoea in homosexual men in 1989-1991. Resistance to penicillin steadily increased, and partial resistance to quinolones has emerged. There was a marked decline in syphilis in most states. Lymphogranuloma venereum is rare, and chancroid seen mostly in returning travellers from Southeast Asia; however, hundreds of cases of donovanosis are seen annually among rural Aborigines. The prevalence of genital infections with Chlamydia trachomatis remained stable at 2.5%-14% in STD clinics, and 5% in family planning clinics. The numbers of cases of clinical genital herpes and
warts
are mostly unavailable. However, specific serology for herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) indicates that 14% of antenatal clinic patients, and 40%-60% of STD patients have been exposed. Pap smears have detected the presence of human papilloma virus (HPV) in 14%-40% of various clinic populations. Exposure to hepatitis B in the non-Aboriginal population decreased markedly. Hepatitis C infection occurred in a high percentage of injecting drug users; the evidence for sexual transmission is not strong. An epidemic of hepatitis A infection occurred in male homosexuals in 1989-1991. Changes in the Australian sex industry resulted in marked improvements in the sexual health of local (but not international) sex workers. The high levels of STDs in Aboriginal communities continues to cause concern.

In immunocompromised patients,
warts
occur frequently and can be extensive. We describe a 24-year-old patient with severe therapy-resistant
warts
. In addition to human papillomavirus infection, he had chronic sinusitis, candidiasis, and atopic dermatitis. Anergy to delayed-type hypersensitivity skin test reaction, significant CD4 lymphopenia, and diminished in vitro T-cell proliferative response and interferon-gamma production indicated a deficiency of cellular immunity. Extremely low concentrations of serum IgM and IgG2 and a severe deficiency of in vitro IgM production pointed also to a humoral
immunodeficiency syndrome
. This case represents a combination of cellular and humoral immunodeficiencies that has not been previously described in association with
warts
.

We report the case of a patient with a long-standing history of widespread chronic plaque psoriasis, who was recently found to have a profound CD4+ lymphocytopenia. He is human
immunodeficiency
virus (HIV) negative. His psoriasis remains active and widespread, and he has had 60 cutaneous malignancies, including many squamous cell carcinomas, excised over the last 10 years. In the past he has had numerous cutaneous viral
warts
. Despite a low peripheral blood CD4+ T-cell count, similar numbers of activated T cells, identified by double labelling for CD4 and HLA-DR antigens, were found in the epidermis of our patient as other individuals with psoriasis. Thus, there appear to be sufficient activated CD4+ T cells in our patient's psoriatic plaques to maintain the psoriatic process.
