Disorders in a beagle breeding colony were discussed, based on 472 clinical charts made in 1974-1983. In 201 neonates less than a week old, hypothermia associated with pneumonia was mostly seen. In 31 puppies from one week to two months old and in 46 young dogs from two months to a year old, pneumonia, canine parvovirus infection, dermal abscess and dermatosis were mostly found. In 91 dogs aged from one to five, trauma, intervertebral disc protrusion, dermal abscess, dystocia, claudication and otohematoma were frequently noted. In 103 animals over five years old, intervertebral disc protrusion, tumors, abscess, trauma and otohematoma were observed most often.

Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) is a severe skin disorder characterised by separation of the dermal-epidermal junction, as it is observed in second degree superficial burns, and it may also involve any mucosal surface area (otic, buccal, conjunctival, respiratory, genital). This condition is generally induced by the ingestion of drugs, particularly certain antibiotics, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, and antiepileptic drugs. Mortality has decreased over the last decades, from 80% to about 25% in recent series. This improvement in survival rate has been related to early diagnosis, management in specialized burn units, proper immunosuppressive treatment and intensive specialised nursing care. The main nursing diagnosis include abnormalities in the skin and mucose membranes integrity, risk of infection, loss of blood volume, risk of hypothermia, acute pain, upper airway insufficiency and anxiety. We here review the nursing care of patients with TEN. We emphasize the daily skin and mucose membranes care, and the prevention of conjunctival sinequiae, including daily conjunctival cleaning and debridement of necrotic tissue and fibrin debris using a handle needle.

Pediculus humanus humanus (known as body lice) are commonly found in the folds of clothes, and can cause skin disorders when they feed on human blood, resulting in an itching sensation. Body lice are known as vectors of infectious diseases, including typhus, recurrent fever, and trench fever. An infestation with blood-sucking body lice induces severe cutaneous pruritus, and this skin disorder is known as "vagabond's disease." A body lice infestation is sometimes complicated with iron deficiency anemia. In the present case, a man in his late 70s died of lethal hypothermia in the outdoors during the winter season. The case history and autopsy findings revealed that the cause of the lethal hypothermia was iron deficiency anemia, which was associated with a prolonged infestation of blood-sucking body lice. Also, he had vagabond's disease because the skin on his body was abnormal and highly pigmented. This is an unusual autopsy case since the body lice contributed to the cause of the death.
