The aim of this paper was o study the long-term changes induced in the rat as a consequence of a 90% resection of small intestine. At 6 months after operation the surviving rats were stable and showed:
hypoproteinemia
, hyperlipemia, and a decrease of bile flow, total lipids, and cholesterol of bile. What residual intestine concern there was an increase in length and size, and decreased transit time; stomach, duodenum and colon too showed increase size. Histologically there was hypertrophy of villi, regressive changes of pancreas and kidney, as well as deposit of
iron
in the kidney. The reasons for these changes are discussed.

We reported two patients who developed severe iron deficiency anemia and
hypoproteinemia
which were induced by excessive drinking cow's milk. Case 1, a 23-month-old girl, had started drinking 800-1,000ml of cow's milk everyday since the age of 9 months. She developed generalized edema at the age of 23 months and visited Saga Medical School for Treatment. Case 2, a 14-month-old girl began to drink cow's milk at the age of 6 months. She drank 1,500ml cow's milk every day at the age of 14 months. She was, referred to our hospital by her physician because of severe anemia.
Hypoproteinemia
and severe iron deficiency anemia in both of these patients were improved by oral
iron
intake and prohibiting of cow's milk. Although many children at their age usually drink more than 500ml cow's milk every day, manifestations of symptoms such as iron deficiency anemia and
hypoproteinemia
do not occur frequently. Thus some investigations suggest that genetic defects as well as other factors related to this disease may be important factors.

A 21-day-old infant presented with anemia, conjugated hyperbilirubinemia,

, and a severe coagulopathy. The hospital course was marked by progressive hepatic failure, encephalopathy, and renal insufficiency. The infant died on day 15 of hospitalization. Postmortem examination showed diffuse hepatic fibrosis and marked siderosis of the liver, pancreas, kidney, adrenal glands, and the duodenal epithelium, with sparing of the reticuloendothelial system. The hematologic, biochemical, and light and scanning electron microscopic features of eperythrozoonosis in four llamas are described. One female and three male yearling llamas were presented for evaluation of chronic weight loss. Three of four llamas had historical evidence of chronic inflammatory conditions. On examination, multiple clinical problems were apparent, including poorly to non-regenerative anemia, inflammatory disease, and
hypoproteinemia
. Coccoid- and ring-shaped basophilic organisms were present on the erythrocytes of all the llamas. On scanning electron microscopy, individual, pairs, and clusters of coccoid-shaped organisms were present on the erythrocytes. The organisms measured 0.4 to 0.6 micron in diameter and caused no marked deformation of the erythrocyte membrane. A rare organism could be found that produced a slight indentation into the erythrocyte membrane. The light and scanning electron microscopic morphologic features suggested that the organism was an Eperythrozoon. Serial evaluation of serum

in all animals, with a concurrent decrease in the total

We report a case of malignant histiocytosis diagnosed by liver-spleen biopsy under laparoscopy. A 49-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with thrombocytopenia, moderate anemia and
hypoproteinemia
. Her bone marrow findings revealed erythroid and megakaryocyte hyperplasia, and the serum ferritin concentration was 2,250 ng/ml though she had not received any blood transfusions. Ferrokinetics analysis showed the pattern of ineffective erythropoiesis, and the half-lives of erythrocytes and platelets were both shortened. Her hepatosplenomegaly gradually increased accompanied by increasing serum ferritin level to 10,000 ng/ml. Liver-spleen biopsy was carried out under laparoscopy and revealed infiltration of atypical histiocytes with erythrophagocytosis, which were positive for S-100 and ferritin but negative for lysozyme. The rate of glycosylation in whole serum ferritin, analyzed by using concanavalin-A binding method, showed that her glycosylated ferritin content was only 8.3%, whereas in sera after
iron
overloading, it was about 70%. Serum isoferritin profiles by isoelectric focussing were studied, and isoferritin pattern from malignant histiocytosis was the same as that in
iron
overloading after neuraminidase treatment. These findings suggest that serum ferritin is synthesized in proliferating histiocytes and released in the plasma as a nonsecretory type (nonglycosylated ferritin) in this case.

Hematologic features were characterized in 12 dogs with iron deficiency anemia attributable to chronic external blood loss. Consistent abnormalities in hemograms included moderate to marked reticulocytosis, decreased mean corpuscular volume, and decreased mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration.
Hypoproteinemia
occurred in only four of 12 dogs. Consistent blood film findings included hypochromic cells, leptocytosis, and erythrocyte fragmentation. These dogs had significantly decreased serum
iron
values (p less than 0.001) and percent transferrin saturation values (p less than 0.001) compared with 33 clinically healthy adult dogs. The total
iron
binding capacity values of these dogs were not significantly different (p greater than 0.5) than those of the healthy dogs. Using erythrocyte volume distribution curves, the percentages of microcytic cells (less than or equal to 45 fl) were determined to range from 20% to 82%. Sequential changes in erythrocyte subpopulations were evaluated in four dogs which received
iron
therapy. The hematologic response consisted of fairly rapid restoration of packed cell volume by production of normocytes followed by a more gradual replacement of residual microcytes by new normocytes.

Hepatic disease was diagnosed in 11 mynah birds. The most common clinical signs were dyspnea, weight loss, and abdominal swelling, usually accompanied by ascites. Radiography (9 birds) revealed hepatomegaly and ascites in most cases, and laboratory testing (6 birds) revealed
hypoproteinemia
and high activity of liver enzymes in all cases. Histologic examination (6 birds) revealed variable amounts of
iron
granule accumulation in hepatocytes, indicating hemochromatosis. Therapy consisted of administration of diuretics and abdominocentesis in dyspneic birds. All birds died, with survival time ranging from 1 day to 1 year.
